    Although best remembered today for her children's stories, including The Railway Children, Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) also wrote several novels and numerous short stories for adults, many of them with a horror or supernatural theme. She was born in London, but after her father's death, when she was just three years old, she spent her formative years travelling with her family, living for periods in France, Spain, Germany and various parts of the south of England. She married Hubert Bland, a bank clerk, in 1880. She was several months pregnant at the time of the wedding, and they went on to have four children together; she also subsequently adopted two children born to her husband as the result of affairs. The Blands were both active in Labour politics, and were co-founders of the Fabian Society in 1884. She lectured on socialism and politics, and wrote political essays, sometimes in collaboration with her husband under the name Fabian Bland, although she was less active in this area as she grew more successful as a writer of fiction.
    'John Charrington's Wedding' was first published in the September 1891 edition of the periodical 'Temple Bar'; it was subsequently reprinted in 'Grim Tales' in 1893.

    I can see that I have watched this before, sometimes I fall asleep because I love your voice and if I am tired I’d like to put it on feel comfortable and sometimes I have to go back the next day and find out what happens, but if I have an early start then I don’t because I forget so I’m glad that you recommended this so I can find out what happened in the end! This is why I don’t always leave comments because I don’t want you to be too busy replying because I look at your channel a lot more than you think!☮️

    Broad daylight and a ghost was able to go into a church and get married. That is plausible. But in the prim and proper British society a man disheveled with dust on him being allowed to walk down the isle is beyond belief!
    Thank you for sharing this one. What a great story.

    Brilliant as ever but more so, I'm listening to this as my Halloween treat but I could have sworn you had already featured this particular story. Edith Nesbit and Amelia Edwards are rising up on my list to reach E. F. Benson. Whether this was your first rendering of it or not (maybe so as I came to you so to speak a bit late) this be the goods. So perfect for tonight too. Thank You for making may locked down Halloween more tolerable.

      Thanks HerrCrankzy - you're right, I had previously done this one, it was one of my very first. I'm uploading remastered versions of a few of my earlier stories to fix glitches in the audio and/or editing. (Although in this case I re-recorded it as the original master was corrupted.) There are one or two others I want to replace when I have a moment, but my main focus will still be on new stories... more coming soon!

    I always find it interesting when an author of a particular sex speaks through the voice of the opposite sex. And does it so well, as in this case. Thanks for dropping in for high tea. The story was scrumptious, and your narration superb. 😊

    • @BitesizedAudio
      @BitesizedAudio  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Rachel, I like high tea - did you have scones with jam and cream? On your main point: yes, I agree, I'm always interested in that aspect too: as well as Nesbit, several of the female ghost story authors of the Victorian age (most notably Amelia Edwards and Charlotte Riddell) used the same device, with a first person male narrator. Of course, in many cases the stories were originally published anonymously, so the readers wouldn't even necessarily know that the writer was female, which adds a whole new dimension to it. Do you know the work of Iris Murdoch? One of my favourite modern (well, relatively - she died about 20 years ago) novelists. She does a similar thing, and gets inside the head of a middle aged man remarkably well (I think, anyway).

    • @rattyrachel4316

      Bitesized Audio Classics, thank you for your in-depth response. Interesting and helpful! I will read up on Iris Murdoch. And your comments on women authors (writing under pseudonyms, and why) of course, make perfect sense.

    This is the best of Nesbit's ghost stories I think. A genuine, well-played sense of horror although the narrator always annoys me a wee bit (I don't mean you of course Simon, lol) - he comes across as a bit arrogant or something. Anyway, another great video thanks!

    So far, the spookiest Victorian story I have read in the past 30 + years is ""Whistle and I will come to you" by M.R. James. Really I do not have a second favorite since most are forgettable to me. Any recommends?

    • @BitesizedAudio
      @BitesizedAudio  2 года назад +1

      Hmmm, it's difficult to answer that as I really have several favourites and it's hard for me to narrow down to one. Also, one person's "spookiness" may leave someone else unmoved. Speaking personally, probably my favourite Victorian ghost stories is 'The Upper Berth' by F. Marion Crawford, there's quite a lot of humour in it but the confrontation with the ghost is original and fairly scary. I also still remember the chill I felt when I first read E. F. Benson's 'The Room in the Tower'. Another personal favourite is 'The Phantom Coach' by Amelia B. Edwards; it's got quite a long slow build-up, but the dénouement in the last 10 minutes is quite hair raising. For something with a bit more depth than your average Victorian ghost story, 'The Shadow in the Corner' by Mary Elizabeth Braddon packs quite a punch. Not the scariest story in itself, but poignant and thought provoking. In terms of MRJ, I do like Oh Whistle very much, but if I had to name my personal favourite of his stories it would probably be 'A Warning to the Curious', or maybe 'A View from a Hill' (you see, my favourites keep chopping and changing all the time, I can't narrow it down!)
