35MM, 4K & SUPER 8 IN ONE SHOW: THE BRITISH FILM COLLECTORS CONVENTION 2023

  • 35mm and 4K interspersed between 35mm reel changes at the British Film Collectors Convention complemented each other surprisingly well. Both looked exceptional on the convention's big 'Scope screen upon which we filled about 20 feet wide rather than the full 24 feet owing to the limitations of the stage area of the Chorleywood War Memorial Hall. 'Scope Super 8 was taken to the full 24 feet however but light ingress into the hall caused us some problems following some modifications since our visit to check its suitability last summer. If we use the hall again we'll have to deal with these.
This video serves as a summary of what took place at the 2023 BFCC and will hopefully entice a few new faces to come along if we do the same again in 2024 and beyond. A lot of time, preparation and work goes into putting on a day like this and it is only worthwhile if there is enough support. This one was a great team effort though and was crowd funded by 13 fellow movie enthusiasts who made the whole thing possible. The support of just about every remaining film dealer in the UK was another important factor.

The screen looks very opaque. This is the main reason why I think the Kuro plasma displays by Pioneer are the best ever made, because they use real glass and an authentic light source. To my mind, a transluscent medium is essential.

I don't know anything about plasma screens Autisticus. I suspect it would be difficult transporting one of those and erecting it for a day, let alone affording one. I didn't include a lot of it in this video as I was projecting and once running I then had to get a camera on it and missed most of it. There's nothing like 'Scope to fill your eyes but it's something that not many home video collectors fully understand and they prefer 1.78:1 ratio films the most as a result. Swinging a 'Scope lens in and having an image immediately twice as wide isn't an option on a telly and even with a video projector it's a bit of a fudge.

I would watch him in the projection booth and he would enjoy opening the screen to cinemascope in a way that the film viewer appreciated the wider image. I have some hope the organisers know somethings. I have no affiliation to the event or the museum but just thought I'd mention these as I do enjoy going and it is one of the few left running film (including genuine Cinerama).

I wanted to check this was a mistake and when it was confirmed that it wasn't I gave up on that one and was going to make How The West Was Won my main focus and asked if they'd like me to do them a promotional video gratis but that caused all correspondence to stop immediately. You just can't help some people. I was talking to someone senior there but the evidence was they didn't know much, if anything, about film. The fact that the Photography & Film museum of the UK thought it a good idea to get rid of the ultimate movie presentation format known to man in the form of 15/70 IMAX does seem to confirm the bean counters rather than the people with the knowledge are running things up there now. I'm hassling the BFI IMAX to do an annual genuine IMAX festival over a long weekend. I think that would have film enthusiasts flying in from all over the world and of course, they have the advantage of being in central London.

I had to pick Keith Wilton up (he's been the sole organizer since 1980 I think but I did it for him this time as he's not well now) so that meant I didn't arrive until about 08:30. Missing half an hour of setup time before the doors opened at 10am meant I was behind all day and didn't recover. Hey John! Big fan of your channel. I love the passion you show when talking about film. I am a 4K enthusiast myself, looking to get into film projection. I would love to get my hands on a Super 8 projector and a scope print of the original Star Wars (from Derann). I live in Quebec, Canada. Would you point me in the right direction as to where I can start looking (web, forums, communities)? I keep looking through Ebays offers, but no luck yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated and keep up the excellent work with the channel! Greetings from Montreal!

The Reel Image in Ohio, USA has new prints of the original Star Wars which costs about £900 Sebastien. That is actually cheaper than the original Derann prints but hold our horses before diving in on that because it's important to get a good Super 8 projector first. The one I recommend is an Elmo ST1200HD but you need to find a good one ahead of any other consideration. There are all manner of variations of ST1200 model but the 'HD' designation has twin track outputs on it which means stereo sound and that should help with any Star Wars Super 8 enjoyment. We ran an extract from the new Star Wars prints at the BFCC but such was the light ingress that I couldn't judge how good it was. It will be important to gauge that before investing in a print. It is the unadulterated version of Star Wars is a proportionally reduced 'Scope print which means the whole image is there and there are thin black bars at the far sides. You may have to re-record a print to get the best stereo sound on it but that can wait until you're more experienced and know what you're doing. An Elmo ST1200 may not be ideal for that process however. I have a trio of Elmo GS1200's which with the right equipment can sync' pulse to PAL video to facilitate re-recordings but the GS1200 is highly electronic and when they go wrong they can be a right pain in the derriere to get fixed.

Interstellar is the best of that little lot Lborg. I haven't seen Independence Day since its theatrical release but it was issued on Super 8 so I would have seen extracts from it back then. Not a great film but many still enjoy it today in spite of what I may think about it. I don't remember the image quality being exceptional so you'll have to let me know what you think. Die Hard and Speed on Super 8 are both excellent and so you'll find they're of very high quality on 4K because the quality of the Super 8's confirm the quality of the original shoot was of high standard. Independence Day may well be hampered by low quality computer animated special effects which is often an issue from films of the period.

I have never seen "Black Hole". I remember the poster on Disney+ Channel.
Do you receive any support from the government to make these presentations?
Since I did not see the previous ones, I will say this: witnessing events like these allows a person to appear for a brief moment in a different world, where people are inspired about something unusual and speak about it passionately. A visitor immediately gets a feeling of witnessing something very special, which energizes them and allows to be surprised and excited as if they were back in their much younger years. In other words... it is very pleasant to see that people continue wonderful traditions and use that to bring people together for a great fun time!

Morning Dmitri. What a lovely post that one is. There are always cine cameras for sale at these film collector events and not many of them are very expensive. My own Canon 814 is with Noel Pratt at the moment because I stupidly left batteries in it and they leaked. I hope he can work his magic on it as I'd very much like to get back to using it again. The images from it are exceptional and when you think Emil Ink shot 'Dead Community Guild' on the lesser 514 model you can probably understand how I feel about wanting it back and working again.
The Black Hole isn't the best film ever made but a section from towards the end of the film was released on Super 8 at the time of its release and that made it feel a bit special to many of us collectors. How we'd have liked to have gotten more after that 400ft reel. It was a 'Scope film though and Disney only released it flat, panned and scanned.
No, the government don't fund these conventions. This one was crowd funded by a group of 14 of us and we're currently discussing whether to carry that forward to attempt a second BFCC at the same hall next year or whether to try to find a bigger, better venue and all put another fifty smackers in the pot.
I think most of us enjoyed Saturday but there are always criticisms of the BFCC. There always have been. This time I pretty much told everyone about the expected compromises but I couldn't have foreseen the changes to the curtains and blackouts. We just had to get on with it as we only had two hours to get everything ready. It's all done in a day and that's all the time we had to prepare. It's not like any of us live locally and have access for several days previous. But you always hear from someone who did a show for a few friends so knows how much trouble it can be! Yes, even putting a little Super 8 projector up, a tripod screen and an extension screen could seem problematic at times. Try putting a 24 foot screen up, two independent sound systems, a pair of Super 8 projectors, a 35mm projector and a 4K video projector and making that all work from one show to the next and you start to get the idea of what is involved. Just hiding all the cables under rugs and cable tidies takes ages so it all adds up and the time quickly dissipates.

@@paulcadman3562 i've got the UHZ50 sat with me here right now because I've just been talking to Optoma about it. With the BFCC out of the way I yesterday dared to risk the firmware update that I've been putting off for fear of a disaster. Well the firmware update went through fine but didn't sort out the 'Dynamic Black' flickering issue so then when the machine prompted me to say it was now ready for a driver update I went for that too. After that there were three flashing lights and nothing to tell me what was wrong. I powered it off to postpone any possible cock-ups until speaking to Optoma's technical department in Hemel Hempstead. This three light warning usually means something fatal has occurred but in this instance it's telling us the driver is taking an age to install. A bit daft to use the same error indication as a terminal failure but there you go. I left it plugged in and walked about for half an hour and it just came back to life. So the upshot is, I'm now in a position to scrutinize this projector fully which I wasn't really before. The firmware update didn't correct 'Dynamic Black' so we'll see if the driver update has made any difference. Up to now, most of the videos I've run through it have had to have the brightness of the laser lamp reined in but initially it took me a while to work this out. Once you know where it is it's rather easy but the image overall does look best in 'Dynamic Black' mode which seems to mean you can't affect the brightness as it's all then automated. Looks like a compromise of constant power output of around 75% will end up being the recommended solution. I think we watched the Blu-ray of 'The Missing' at 50% and that looked fabulous then - just like watching a 35mm film print in fact.
Basically, it's a minefield but paying someone to calibrate it would be a waste of time and money because you'd still have to check the brightness of the lamp to see which constant power setting suits each video best. Once you tinker with that you should probably tinker with other settings too. The UHD550X was much easier and no way anyone should ever need anyone to 'calibrate' it for them.

This wasn't quite to the standard we used to put on but we're not exactly a growing hobby any longer to had to accept a smaller venue was required. But it is a lovely part of the world and a very nice hall so if we do another there next year we'll raise the bar a bit. I'm already making plans but it depends on the other chaps and chapettes involved. John.

We have a similar gathering in Blackpool called the 'Northern Film Collectors Convention' every November with the only thing to bear in mind is that no one else has a big screen like the BFCC but it's not so important for most events. There are other smaller film fairs but the BFCC is the original film collectors convention and it's always been London based so that's why it tends to be busier. John.

I think this is the only event of its kind other than the Northern Film Collectors Convention in Blackpool over here in November. Even the NFCC doesn't have a big screen anything like ours though and it probably wouldn't fit in to their venue anyway owing to the height of it so there would be no point in me driving it up there for them. I first saw it in NFT1 and it had me going a bit. Not many films have had me on edge in the past 35 years or so but that one did. Now I just watch it and admire it so that aspect is gone but what a great example of the film making art. That John Carpenter fellow certainly directed some wonderful films.

22,000 subscribers. i don't tend to look at that or think about it Joe so thank you for pointing it out. I see the figure for how many might have subscribed in the previous four week period but rarely give it much thought. I do try to produce videos that will get enough views to warrant making them but this was one I didn't expect to get many at all. It seems to be doing well and the comments indicate that most have enjoyed it. It's a nice surprise. I started helping Keith Wilton with the BFCC's about 30 years ago so it's just something I'm interested in preserving and seeing if we can take it onto something else a bit different now. This one turned out to be more of a party as people did genuinely seem to be enjoying seeing everyone again and simply talking about their hobby. There were quite a few new faces as a result of this channel and that made a big difference to it. We have some decisions to make about whether or not to do another in 2024 but we're talking about it already and have some irons in the fire. We will look for somewhere else but if nowhere suitable presents itself then we'll just have to get this hall right next time. We can do it but I don't think so many people will come to Chorleywood a second time. We'll see.

John, at the old Mile End ABC (now The Genesis) on the two smaller screens (which i actually preferred to the supposedly better cinema upstairs) i used to think it was really cool when the screen was adjusted by those sidebar mechanisms to accommodate the Panavision frame but i never really understood how the 35MM image could then suddenly appear to be 70MM especially as they appeared to be using the same projector for both formats ?. Something else i wondered about was why some supposedly big-budget blockbusters weren't shown in the widescreen format where-as some lesser budgeted films were ?, you'd have thought it would've been the opposite.

    • @moviecollector5920

It's just the 'Scope lens that facilitates the wider aspect ratio Barry. There was a bit of a switch to Super 35 because anamorphic lenses, however good they are, always introduce a little distortion here and there and with computer animators drawing over so much of modern films, it made the job easier for them without the extra lens to add miniscule imperfections to the frames they were subsequently animating. Panavision produced superior lenses to the original Chretien devised CinemaScope lenses and so quickly took over the market in the 1960's I think. The 'Scope format (as it is widely known in the industry) is when we used to see the curtains open and then the making follow prior to a feature made in the anamorphic 'Scope format. A 'Scope lens to shoot the film and then the same specification two times squeeze 'Scope lens to project it. Simples. With Super 35 2.40:1 ratio films the end product was optically blown up to create a squeezed, full frame negative from which the prints were struck and projected using the 'Scope lens.
