When I've planted B&B I've noticed the shrubs or trees are often in clay which is very different from the glacial till soil in my area (Washington State) Why are so many B&B's in clay? Most trees in Washington state are grown in flood plane soil which is very high quality for growing trees. To dig a tree in glacier till is very difficult to get a quality root ball, hence the use of the river bottom silt.
So re. replacing the soil around the new tree, you recommended to only replace 10% of the old soil with new high quality soil like compost. Is this correct?
If you're amending all the soil go nuts and put as much nice soil around the tree as you like. However, if you're only going to amend the soil in the hole stay with 10% high-quality compost or cow manure.
Yes, you can even leave a little along the sides at the bottom if necessary. You will end up doing more damage than good to either the tree or your back if you try to monkey around and remove it all. Remove as much as you can though, it takes a little longer but the tree will appreciate it and grow much better in the long run.

Yes, for trees I usually place the top of the ball about 2-4 inches above grade because I know I'm going to scrape off 1-3 inches of soil.

Rootballs grown in sand tend to fall appart.
