    Thank you for your instructions on how to use this. I got into a serious conversation with a random stranger at Walmart about how much we love coffee and this precious man surprised me by buying me this French press. And i just tried it and it's got to be the best coffee I've ever tasted!

    I was doing everything except blooming the coffee for 30 seconds. I’ve just been adding my grinds and all the hot/boiling water to fill it up and letting it steep for 4 minutes. Still a far superior brew to Keurig with my method but will try your method in the morning. Thank you for this video!

    2:25: most of the coffee floats above the water. that means the water extracted a very few of all the grounds. as we will plunge down, we will make the water pass through this coffee bed but most likely there will be a channel so most of the coffee won't be extracted at the end. So tastewise it'll be a sour, bad coffee. I guess this is about thermal mass. A pre-heated, high heat-resistent french press will maintain higher degrees for longer so the water will take out much more solubles. and for me longer it brews, better it tastes, i go for 15 minutes if i'm not busy. just give it a try. but i dont use a french press, but a porcelain tea brewer. it keeps the heat so efficiently, most french presses are weak at this point.

    This was a wonderful video, thank you! I always fill my press near the top (I usually leave 1/2 inch). I never get grounds but I do get extremely fine coffee at the last cup (which I actually enjoy). I also like 1/2 a level cup of ground dark roast in my 34 oz Chambord (equal to 2 Tbsp per 8 oz water). I should try a medium grind instead of medium-fine and see how it goes.

    For those of us who don't live at sea level - Water boils at 212 degrees F at sea level but boils at a lower temperature as you go up in elevation - it boils at about 2 degrees less for every 1000 ft in altitude. So at 6000 ft, like where I live, water boils at about 200 degrees F - just right for French Press coffee.

    Great info, I hadn't been doing that 30-second bloom part. It's no fun getting the grounds out afterwards. The debate in our home is if it's ok to rinse the grounds down the kitchen sink ("it cleans the pipes"..."yeah but what about the environment?") or throw away in the trash. What are other viewers doing? One interesting use is to take a small scoop of grounds and mix with liquid soap for a satisfying hand scrub. Rinses clean and no smell.

Also the lid by the spout has a closed side to keep heat in for brewing which he didn’t use. After brew time you turn the lid to expose the grill side at the spout for pouring.

      Sea saltish coarse. Although half the fun with the French Press is experimenting with grind size and time to find something that suits just your taste buds. I generally grind a bit finer than sea salt to get more flavour out, I prefer it strong. Coarser tastes too weak for my taste but brings out more of the fruitier notes. Have fun! Cheers!

      Good coffee is all about using fresh beans and grinding the amount you need before making. So really you need to invest in a decent quality grinder which start at around $100. It’s a hassle but the end result is much better. Oh and don’t use tap water, use bottled water.

  • @neildesperandum6114
    @neildesperandum6114 3 года назад +9

    Hooray! Fill to around 1/3rd, stir/agitate thoroughly, LEAVE TO BLOOM before topping up and STIRRING AGAIN thoroughly. Leave to stand for a few minutes, allowing all the grounds to infuse and drop to the bottom of the beaker. Maybe gently agitate the crema (as he does on the video) to release any grounds trapped in there. Once you’ve done that, using the plunger just clears any remaining grounds. There’s no need to be pedantic about measurements and timing; everybody’s taste is different. The right way to do it is the way you like it. And I’m not convinced about the ‘don’t use boiling water‘ theory. Nevertheless, I do put a dash of cold into the kettle before pouring. And no, the kettle isn’t a long spouty thing. There’s more, but I have to get a life.

    Can you translate the grams of coffee per ounces of water you mentioned into the actual measuring tool that you used (which was in tablespoons)? I don't know how the 7 grams equates to the three tablespoons you suggest - per I am supposing a normal sized french press? I didn't hear you mention how much water the french press you used holds. Mine holds a little less than 32 oz below the silver band. I added 3 tablespoons of coffee and filled it to an inch or so below the band and ended up with coffee flavored water. I understand that the grind will affect the weight of the coffee in a single tablespoon somewhat but something doesn't seem right here. Can you translate to X tablespoons per X ounces of water rather than that math you gave after you told us the measures? Thank you.

    About the times.. do you start the timer from the begining of pouring water for the bloom phase or after pouring all the water?
    And after the bloom do you stop the timer at 30 sec, pour all the rest of the water and start again the timer for 3:30 min or let the timer run the moment you started it, at the bloom phase, till the end of 4 min?
    Thanks

      I think he meant - and this is the advice from others as well - a total brew time of 4 minutes, INCLUDING the ~30 seconds of bloom.
      It should be noted that not all coffee nerds recommend the bloom. Some just dump all the water in, give it a quick stir, then let the clock start. I've gotten good results that way - in fact that's what I do most of the time.

      You need to give it at least 7 minutes before adding plunger, an dont plunge it just use as strainer. Plunging it stirs up sludge an gets into cup.

    Coffee Math: If you fill the French Press up to the top; how many oz is that? I have a Bodum scooper that is 7gm and my big cup holds 16 oz of coffee/cup. About how many scoops of coffee do I need? Shouldn't the scoops of coffee used be how many oz of water are in the French Press?

    • @ladyelainefairchild3546
      @ladyelainefairchild3546 Год назад

      Yes this video is useless since the presses come in different sizes.

    • @mikefisc9989
      @mikefisc9989 Год назад

      He mentions that you need 7g of coffee grounds for every 4oz of water. So, if your big cup is 16oz, then you would need 4X the 7g, or 28g, which is slightly less than 1ounce of coffee grounds if you use US customary units. Good luck.
