Fabric softener purposely leaves a “waxy” coat or “film” on the surface and had a slight weight to it to lay down the textures of fabric making them feel soft and appear smooth again. This is why softener is not recommended on sports/active wear or anything that indicates “breathable” fabric as it costs the fabric and actually hinders it from “breathing”. It also actually traps first and sweat from your skin into the fabric. So it may still smell good, but it holds in the grime easier. But man, I live for good smelling detergents/softeners lol! There is a slightly less heavy feel with the “natural” lines and using a lesser amount (less than the recommended). Adding the Pine oil/cleaners helps keep it from getting too heavy also.

exactly! i noticed that fabric softener makes my sponges feel oily afterwards :( i just squeeze in a strongish cleaner that strips oils like some plain old dish soap and rinse with just water lol!
