Always love these McQ chats, there's a reason he is where he is now, and I doubt he's gonna let us down with Dead Reckoning. The first Reacher is a great adaptation of that book, regardless of size.

Sheesh, this was epic, and it's only part 1! 😅Thank you all again for bringing the stellar-ness!

I completely agree agree with McQ about fan service and him working in franchise films. But isn't that contradictory to the work he's been doing with Mission and its ever so slight nods (aka the dreaded "fan service") to past events or people h as the White Widow is Max's daughter, Kittridge coming back in 7 & 8, the plot through line of the Syndicate/the Apostles in Rogue Nation & Fallout....is that not fan service? Granted the callbacks to the Reacher books went badly, and he spoke on how he'll never do that again...hes been doing it with Mission unless I've got that all wrong.
It seemed like the trials of writing and being behind the scenes as mostly a credited writer before directing the first Reacher film, etc and retelling all that got him worked up.

all those examples of mission are definitely not fan service, as nobody actually asked for it. they're simple callbacks that only fans might catch, they all serve the story but are not essential to know for the casual viewer. the only time he might have had to work around fan service was when tom himself asked him to add a julia storyline in fallout bc fans wouldnt stop asking about her, and mcq just centered the entire movie around her. i think when he talks about fan service is more so in the way he writes the story. he's not going to waste any time on something if it doesnt serve the story.
