Greetings from New England. The brew pub and restaurant that I work at has many large chalkboard signs and I am considered the resident "chalk guru" and sign writer however your skills put me to shame. Thank you for the tutorials, I have learned a great deal. If you ever visit Kennebunkport, Maine, I owe you a nice cold pint. -CHEERS!
FANTASTIC!... inspirational videos!... I'm about to embark on a chalkboardin' future... managed to escape the desk job 9-5... a quick look at You Tube and I've struck gold! ;-)
Cheers John! I was referring to the paint you do the lettering with. I use the woodcraft markers but wanted to try paint for lettering. Cheers mate ;0) Loving your work!
hi John! im addicted to your videos...watch them over and over..... u r such an inspiration! and like your beard:) i was wondering if you can demonstrate with one food item that im struggling to draw.. are u ready for this? PEROGIES.. quite a challenge.... thanks!
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the account password. I love any tips you can offer me
@Anderson Iker thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Hi John, great videos! Like yourself, I am a chalk board artist in the UK. Just a few questions though with a few things I've been struggling with. The pens, I used to use zig but never got a great fluidity from them like you do. I prime it as and when needed but short lines and the ink dries quickly. Do you have any tips? I now use posca pens as I like the blend I can get with them. The thing with them and the zigs is the almost instant nib deteriation. Do you come across this? My lines and curves just don't stay sharp and I find myself having to correct it with a black pen. Do you have a way of combatiting this? Many thanks and keep up the great work. Simon
Hi Simon, thanks for your kind comments. How weird I have just been talking to another friend and a chalkboard artist and he put he on to Posca pens and I have just sent of for some. The zig pens can lose their nib definition quite quickly and as for the flow, well I tend to. Flood them well and dab off excess before I write but they can be temperamental. It's one of the reasons I use a brush more often now a days. Mind you I nearly always use pens for shop windows. In fact I even hold the nib, some time cut down from 50mm, and dip it in white ink and just holding it in my finger, write with that. If you use a brush, try liquidtex soft body paint and water it down quite a bit so it's like pouring cream. It covers well and is probably cheaper in the long run. I'd like to. See your work. Can you post a photo or two on my Facebook page 'John Neal Chalkboard Artist'? All the best, John.
Hi Charlie I get my pens from a good Kuretake supplier in UK, called BHMA. See them online. I never wipe off I always overpaint with smooth black masonry paint. All the best John.
Its frustrating to see you on RUclips to legitimize this unschooled 'signwork'. Its become the new normal that is being offered by many uneducated sign 'professionals' these days. Every single video I have watched, you 'teach' others that this is correct art when its very far from it. Again, get a book on sign layout and study it, your too old to keep making these design mistakes over and over,... learn the right way at some point.
Hi Jason. Thanks for your continued and extensive interest in my signwritig work. You are a unique talent distilling criticism where others find only praise, battling against a tide of my thousands of followers, hundreds of clients and many, many customers who have bought my videos. I am always willing to learn and explore so I googled your name but I find nothing online either in google , or on RUclips to benefit from your obvious talent. You say I am breaking rules. Well as we all know, in art, there are no rules. There are certain guidelines that produce predictable results but in the end it is the integrity of the artist and, in my case, the satisfaction of the client that wins the day. I have been seriously sihgnwriting for the last 16 years and have travelled the country (UK) and worked in association with major breweries and top butchers. I have had offers from abroad to travel and teach. Unfortunately your prolonged effort to criticise my work is all in vain. I finished work and retired recently. However you will still have to endure my lack of talent if you catch any of my forthcoming videos. So please steer clear and save yourself the agony. All the best with your career, pity I can't see you work anywhere.
Yes, I am sure the top butchers and brewers are quite cognizant of the rules of proper design, though you seem to be... not so much. And of course your personal theory of design trumps the hundreds of years of established rules as long as you make money, ( and the 'art expert' clients are satisfied). I guess that rules were made to be broken, so have it, your doing a great job there and every item I have seen is a personal triumph for you. No, I am pretty old fashioned when it comes to technology, nor am I an attention seeker. That is why I do not have anything on the internet, however the city where I live and the surrounding area has many years of my shops work, in flat signwork and 3D, ( think WETA,). Its just too late for you to pick up a design book and learn anything new, so have fun with your misguided. If I ever get the bug to be a RUclips star such as yourself, I will have plenty of targets to shoot down with ...proper signwork.
Jason Argone to everyone I told you read this and it proves the M cycle is suffered by men not women I would say it's a 28 day one or maybe that no one will pick up the dummy that's left the pram
