My biggest complaint with the BRS is the wind protection and how much gas you lose attaching and detaching to fuel cans
Thank you for your review! I have this same unit. I actually like that the lid sticks and works similarly to a pressure cooker. I found this decreases the boil time and fuel consumption even more. I simply hold the lid down just in case it comes off while pouring water out through the slots in the lid. I'm unsure if it was designed for that purpose, but I'm glad it does. I understand this may not work for those who cook in the pot.
I think if ya drill a small hole in the lid to act as a pressure release the lid wont stick as hard. But part of me thinks thats intentional. Most people would use a pot of this size to mainly boil water which is why you dont need to take the lid off.
There are already drain holes in the top of the lid. I don't think it's a suction thing. I just think the plastic expands when it heats up causing it to stick.

I got this pot right after seeing your first IG story with it. Its amazing. Don't know anyone who could ever justify paying $100 more for the Jetboil Stash over that kit you're showing off here with that FireMaple stove. I don't think you'd gain any performance or weight savings. As for the lid, I found that I can pour at least up to two cups of water out through the strainer holes immediately after it comes to a boil without the lid popping off at all. Doesn't come out as quickly and takes a little wiggling to keep the flow going but the lid definitely holds well. Otherwise, I just give it a few seconds after turning off the stove and with a firm grip on the pot handle, it doesn't take me much effort to lift the lid off. Obviously reach the lid handle from the side opposite of the strainer holes to prevent any residual steam from burning.
I own this exact set, and it's amazing. My only problem is that now I need a new cup! 🙄 With my old 750ml titanium pot, I used the S2S X-Mug instead of the lid. However, with the Petrel, that doesn’t work because you can't fold the handle over the top anymore. The smaller X-Cup fits inside the pot but doesn’t have enough volume. So, we need to find a cup that fits outside the pot, around the heat exchanger, like the ones Jetboil or MSR WindBurner have.
I have the Greenpeak stove paired with their FMC-XK6 1L heat exchanging pot. The one thing the FMC-XK6 pot doesn't have that I wish it did is the slot cutouts for the stove arms, I wish it did, but that's not a deal-breaker for me. I love the gear. I do use mine for cooking only, I don't drink coffee
Great video, very informative. I bought this setup based on one of your previous videos. The system works good but I found it not worth the weight. I ended up going with a Toaks 550ml ti pot and BRS 3000T stove. Total weight is just under 3.3oz. Also the handle on the Petrel doesn't hold the top on very well, needed a sack to hold everything together. What I did love about the Petrel was how solid it sits on the stove, really locked in with the slots in the heat exchanger.
@@BackcountryExposure Yeah I'm not sure what is wrong. My JetBoil Stash has same type handle and it does lock in place. This one folds down and kinda stays there but pops open very easily.
Yeah, the lid sticks when hot. I just put it on at an angle. I also have the larger firemaple hx pot that I use with different stoves. It would me nice for them to bring out a 600ml without the slots. We use ours with the hornet.
I was also able to get the stove and pot and have add slightly opposite experience with them. My lid is fine and doesn’t expand like yours and create suction. You may want to take some sandpaper to the rim or cut a couple slits around the rim so it doesn’t happen. And my Green Peak Piezo isn’t the best. The stove also doesn’t have a regulator. However, for the price point I wholeheartedly agree it’s one of the best value buys you can get!!!
I think at the price point there's bound to be a point where it's not perfect in longevity. The Amicus, probably my favorite stove of all time doesn't have a regulator. To be honest, I don't know that I've seen a significant enough difference in a regulator vs not to know that it's worth it. I don't know. Maybe that's some testing that needs to be done.
When do you talk of regulator, do you mean 1) it cannot be selected how much gas burning, but once is opened the amount is the same 2) the pressure regulater, to use when we are quite height ??? thanks

@@BackcountryExposure From my maths more than 5 days is when the fire maple becomes lighter than a toaks. This is because a brs/toaks combo burns 10g~ for every 600ml x twice per day. Hence beyond a 5 day trip length you’ll have to go for a medium size canister over a small one.
I've used this setup on my last couple of overnights. I had a JetBoil (over 20 years old at this point, so whatever it cost originally, it earned its place). But the FireMaple is lighter, faster, and takes up less room. Don't know how it will be in 2020 years ... but I'll let you know.

I really like the heat exchanger pots like the Olicamp XTS pots.. but do I really need to boil water that fast? Especially since I've been cold soaking 😅 Lately I've using the Windmaster on low and like the silence and taking my time like with alcohol stoves.
I was surprised how quickly this boiled, and I wasn't using a stove with supports that aligned with the slots. Honestly, I'd prefer it didn't have them so I can use whatever stove I want without worrying about a support slipping into a slot and tipping over
The lid expands when it gets hot, and sticks on the inside wall of the pot. I used a wood file to slightly reduce the diameter of the lid and it doesn't stick anymore.
If you are willing to trade 1.9oz for functionality, you can replace the lid with a Sea to Summit Frontier Folding Cup! The locking arm keeps it sealed on when in my pack!
@@aslorcrasloc8193 I love both combinations. But the point was to focus on the value aspect with the green peak stove. Keeping the whole kit under $50 with very similar performance.
Yeah those will fit inside as well. I don’t know for certain that the pocket rocket 2 is a true 120° between supports. The BRS does not fit into the slots. That said you can still use the pot on the stove, just not into the slots.
I'm really sold on the Petrel! I'm using the Fire Maple Hornet II stove with it for light weight. I was using the Windmaster but it's harder to fit in the pot. Does the Green Peak fit better than the Windmaster?
The Windmaster is an amazing stove. It’s got better wind performance with the concave burner head and the metal lip around the edge. Windmaster also has the regulator. So it’s a more premium stove. The Green Peak has similar features, but the burner is less defined in the concave shape and does not have a regulator.
I've been using mine with the Pocket Rocket Delux for a few months now. It's the best stove I've had. The slightly heavier put is more than offset in fuel savings.
The pot lid expands when exposed to high temperatures. When it cools down, it shrinks and returns to its original size. This is why it locks onto the hot pot.
@@Juanny2023 I don’t have a deluxe to know for sure. However I’ve heard of others who have done it, they just needed to bend the pot supports a touch to make it fit. Otherwise you can also just set the pot on top and not use the slots.
So you happen not to have the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 nor Deluxe laying around, but you happen to have FOUR different Fire Maple stoves. Uh, huh. I can personally state that the Fire Maple FMS-116T does NOT work well with this stove. I'm not sure why you think it does, because it has too many metal parts sticking out, plus the thickness of the hinges keep catching on the stove. Last thing I want to be messing with when I have a pot of boiling water is trying to disengage it from the stove. I bought the FMS-116T based on this video. Please do better.
@@millsmarkchris I’m sorry that that has been your experience. I haven’t found it to be an issue for me. Similarly the little hook of the Windmaster Triflex catches a touch when removing the pot from that pairing. Again, hasn’t been enough of an issue or concern for me to not use it. Your feedback is noted though, and I’ll try to be more thorough in pointing out those details.
@@BackcountryExposure I then bought the Fire-Maple Greenpeak to work better with the pot, and that died on me a few hours ago, so I’m in a bad mood, lol. @@BackcountryExposure I had been doing time/gram tests all weekend with it and the Petrel vs, other stoves and pots (water from the fridge, canister from the freezer, fan, etc.), and one time when I attached it to a canister the fuel just didn’t come out (it wasn’t one from the freezer). I initially thought the canister was empty until I weighed it and the math didn’t work out, and I could hear sloshing. It was a GSI canister and i tried a BRS-3000T on it and that worked. I tried a Coleman canister (isobutane mix, never pure propane) with the Greenpeak and that didn’t work, either. I emailed Fire Maple about it. I can’t find any fix for it or for any stove with that problem. Disappointing because it was great. I liked it way better than the FMS116T, even though it was half the price. Thanks for the Soto recommendation. The tri attachment sounds like a bit of a bother, and an extra cost, unlike when you made your video about it five years ago, but it seems to check every other box.
@@BackcountryExposure P.S. I just did another test and both the Greenpeak and the FMS116T worked on a Sterno fuel canister. But when I tried the Coleman again, the FMS116T worked, but the Greenpeak didn’t. Huh? (Maybe it’s because of the Greenpeak’s thick base.). I then tried the GSI canister again with the Greenpeak, and it barely made a flame, so I dunno if it was just overused yesterday or what when it didn’t work with that. So I guess the Greenpeak doesn’t work 1) when the fuel canister pressure is low, and 2) with Coleman fuel canisters, even though other stoves do. Regardless, the Greenpeak doesn’t seem that reliable, at least compared to the FMS116T and the BRS3000T.

@@BackcountryExposure Oh thanks, It seems a great option. Though I've heard that it only works with isobutane, don't know if it's true
Do other stoves fit in the pot? Liking the pot but already have 2 stoves ( MSR Pocket Rocket 2 and the BRS 3000t) so don’t really want to by another.
Yeah those will fit inside as well. I don’t know for certain that the pocket rocket 2 is a true 120° between supports. The BRS does not fit into the slots. That said you can still use the pot on the stove, just not into the slots.
So you're saying that @justinoutdoors and his new innovative lid need to jump in here.
That’d be pretty cool if it fit! I don’t think it’d be the same diameter though.
And it slips into the Toaks 550ml Bowl 103mm diameter (no lid)
Neoprene sleeve from AliExpress
I'm really sold on the Petrel! I'm using the Fire Maple Hornet II stove with it for light weight. I was using the Windmaster but it's harder to fit in the pot. Does the Green Peak fit better than the Windmaster?
The Green Peak is a little shorter than the windmaster because you don't have the regulator.
@@BackcountryExposure Thank you sir, that means it will fit in the Petrel, I'm sure!
I am especially careful with camping stoves. I can imagine getting seriously burnt on a hiking trip -- so far from a hospital.
How does that stove compare to the Soto Windmaster?
The Windmaster is an amazing stove. It’s got better wind performance with the concave burner head and the metal lip around the edge. Windmaster also has the regulator. So it’s a more premium stove.
The Green Peak has similar features, but the burner is less defined in the concave shape and does not have a regulator.
I've been using mine with the Pocket Rocket Delux for a few months now. It's the best stove I've had. The slightly heavier put is more than offset in fuel savings.
My apologies! Not sponsored. My bad!
The pot lid expands when exposed to high temperatures. When it cools down, it shrinks and returns to its original size. This is why it locks onto the hot pot.
⚠️ The Fire Maple pot stand does not fit in the Petrel pot. But the Jetboil one does.
Does this pot work with the pocket rocket deluxe

Do you have a stove that you recommend, besides a Fire-Maple, since I’ve already bought two of their stoves? Is the Soto Windmaster Triflex the best option? I really like this pot and I don’t want to give up on it.
@@millsmarkchriswhat was the failure you had on the green peak? Have you contacted Fire Maple about it? I’d suggest trying that.
Before I started using the Green Peak I’ve been using the Windmaster with the Triflex. That’s what I’d suggest. Obviously a higher cost, but the Windmaster is amazing. I’ve been using mine since 2018 or so and still runs like new.
