A silly little thing but only use plastic bottles in a bathroom, if you drop glass bottles you may break tiles, chip the shower tray or worse you end up glass shards everywhere
I had glass shards during my shower! I was dead against faux amber glass bottles (plastic bottles) and then I dropped a heavy amber glass bottle. It was dumb, but I swore it’d never happen.
I was very hesitant to watch this video because we're almost finished redoing our primary bathroom and I was afraid of discovering mistakes in my choices. Thorough prior research was very helpful in preventing mistakes and your video should be a must see when redesigning a bathroom. I'm happy to say your recommendations have been incorporated in our new bathroom. One suggestion that I really appreciate came from our contractor who suggested a motion sensor dim floor light when coming into the bathroom (we're getting older) so we can see where we're going in the middle of the night because the toilet is at the end of the room. One thing I was conscious of when purchasing tile was not only to not have a high gloss tile on the floor but also on the wall because I do not want to see my reflection on the wall. Keep these (more serious) videos coming, they are precious.
One of my absolute no go's when it comes to any living space is a bathroom without a window that you can fully open. Any ventilation system I come across is shitty. It always smells funky in those bathrooms, the noise is driving me mad, it tends to get moldy in there, and the artificial light is making me depressed. After living like this throughout my adult life I now have two bathrooms, a bigger one with two windows so that you can create a proper air flow and a small guest bathroom with a little window. The person who came up with windowless bathrooms should go to court for crimes against humanity.
I would go so far as to say that especially for a guest bathroom, a loud exhaust fan is a must! We all know it doesn't actually mask our sounds, but it's comforting nonetheless. :)
I so agree with you about glossy tile flooring in a bathroom! We stayed at a hotel with glossy floors and the shower had a curtain, not door. Water often was on the floor, just inside the door when you walked in and you couldn't see it! I slipped and fell so hard, not once, but twice! That place was a lawsuit waiting to happen.
It’s gorgeous as a polished, but a nightmare! Also the amount of bathroom stalls I’ve seen finished in a polished tile where you can see into the stall next door is alarming
I am in the kitchen and bath plumbing fixture sales world. I have to say i agree with everything you have said in this video! So refreshing to see a designer on RUclips who actually knows what they are talking about!
Love your content, but this has to be my fave so far! Thank you for such helpful info AND more importantly, for explaining the reasons why you choose particular fittings etc. I love how much thought you give to the practicality of designing a space, how it will actually be used by the person living with it, and not just picking trending styles that look great. Would absolutely love your thoughts on bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, home office/study. Thanks for a fab video 🙂

Been watching your videos for a while and I always love how you talk about the visual appeal of design but also the practical side of it as well! Could you maybe do a video about lighting options for bathrooms that are renter friendly? A lot of your lighting advice is installing new kinds of lights in new locations, but are there any options/work-arounds for all of us stuck with dreadful apartment bathroom lighting?
Smart bulbs! I live in a 1 bed apartment, so my bathroom has no windows/ natural light. I have 2 pot lights and a really ugly plastic light above the mirror and pedestal sink, it also has a shaver socket in built that only works when the ugly plastic light is on.... I switched my pot light bulbs (gu10) for smart version that i mostly use Alexa/ echo devices to control. Im in the UK so electric in the bathroom is basically a no no unless you have a LARGE bathroom and can install sockets far enough away from the water sources (not something I can do). So i have an echo/Alexa just outside of the bathroom door for voice commands, a battery operated motion sensor inside the bathroom and I've set up plenty of routines. For example the temperature and brightness of the pot lights varies depending on the time of day, an hour beforehand sunset it changes from the regular 3500k and 100%brightness to 2700k and 50% brightness. after 11pm until 6am the temperature of the light remains 2700k but brightness is 5%! All can be overidden with voice commands or using the app, the preset routines just fit my daily schedule. In the new year im getting an electrician in to sort out a few small jobs, the bathroom will have the fugly plastic light above the mirror and pedestal sink removed and replaced with just an electric shaver socket (allowed by British regulations) that is on consistently. Will then replace the mirror (flat builders grade POS) and replace it with a mirrored cabinet which the top of will act as a shelf for charging my electric toothbrush using the shaver socket 😊 I don't do makeup in the bathroom - no natural light so wouldn't whatever lights were in there, the pot lights at 100% are fantastic for shaving. I did consider getting a mirrored cabinet with built in lighting, there's some that have pretty backlit affect ones like the round mirror in this video. However they are £150+ and the nicer ones are much more expensive, so I will make do without it! For renter friendly options, I've seen the sorry girls change bathroom light like the dreaded 3 combo to a different light with 2 or 1 bulbs, keep the original in storage and just switch out when you move taking your nice fitting with you (hopefully eventually to your own place!

Even with no money to renovate my builder designed home, I was able to afford to change the light switch for my unholy trinity lights (incandescent bulbs) to a dimmer switch. My tired eyes blessed me every morning letting me ease into waking up.
I have the exact stickable storage that you showed in the video and it’s been up for months without issue. I have 2 housemates I share the shower with so each of us having our own shelf in a small, rented shower is important and we can’t just remodel
Let me be honest. I find you as an interior designer rather skilled. ( honestly) You are engaging, responsible, and honest. Your personal style...is you...never lose it. Regarding this video, allow me to say that your ink makes me jealous. Lol. Great work. Thank you.
We updated our 40 year old bathroom and en suite a year ago, and rather chuffed that we avoided all these mistakes. I put a lot of research into low maintenance and elder/disabled needs as we don't want to do this again. Rippled shower glass, flush to the wall toilets, and large tiles with enough texture to avoid slipping and also minimise grouting. Brushed nickel finishes - a quick clean once a week keeps them looking good. Grab rail along one side of the bath and in the en suite's shower. Recommendation for hand basin stand was to go to the floor so that in the event of a fall, heads or other body parts aren't dented on the way back up. Space is limited, so we picked a drop in basin that we liked, then made a timber base with removable shelves - there's no flat surface, but that's where the inset mirrored cabinet comes in - it has a narrow open shelf below and that deals with most of the daily needs. It looks so much better than any of the commercial ones (all of which were too big!) and ended up being a lot cheaper.
Always love your practical approach to design. I will second your tips regarding a rain head shower - I don’t wash my hair every day and during a flood-forced remodel where we accelerated our plans to totally revamp our primary bath for age in place, we opted for just a hand-held on a height-adjustable rod in a wet room (with a set-in tub, not freestanding - too hard to clean around lol). I’m 5’1” and my hubby is about 6’ so this works great for us. Also ditto on the non-slippery surfaces (and fewer grout lines which I know you’ve mentioned before!).
I like to decant my shampoos and hair products into matching, clear (plastic)containers for the shower to avoid "shower clutter". I absolutely hate having to see 5 different size bottles and tubes of whatever on the shelf, in the niche, on the floor, etc.
I have no idea why RUclips decided to put this video in my algorithm, but you are so effortlessly polished and aesthetically pleasing 😭😂. All these are excellent ideas! As I commented in someone else’s post- we use only shampoo, conditioner and body bars and one liquid body wash - all natural made products; I have a pretty plastic bottle of body oil I use just before I step out of the shower. My body lotion is one bottle on the bath counter and my husband’s favorite beard oil is on the counter. Since I downsized on my facial skincare , hair products to 2 and makeup, we have opened up so much space up!
good tips! i renovated my small bathroom last summer and luckily included many of your suggestions. the in drawer oulet is a true game changer! love it! ❤❤❤
I have one of the world's smallest bathrooms and it's been a challenge trying to upgrade it from the tiny space it is to a functioning bathroom where you don't feel like you're in a closet. Thank you for the guidance. It is most appreciated!
We have a high ceiling in our bathroom and an overhead rain shower. We never use it. Instead, we use the handheld wand that is on the side of the shower. By the time the water reaches us from the rain shower head, it has somewhat cooled.
A really good video. Other designers only tell what you should put in, including the tile. Anything that starts with function is going to be more stylish.
My stick on shelfs are loaded and don't show any signs of falling off. I also use a stick on shower curtain rail that goes around a corner and I am honestly concerned that it will take the wall with it if I ever try to remove it
We’ve renovated our bathroom this year and we’re still so happy with the result. We picked stone tiles for flooring and shower walls. They’re mat and not sleepering . Before we had white tiles and it was a nightmare to clean.
Excellent video! On the topic of safety and not slipping People Rinse the Floor of the tub or shower before you get out! I was visiting in laws and mil left conditioner residue on the tub floor and I ended up with 23 double stitches across the top of my eye because when I stepped in to shower my foot immediately slid out from under me. And also yes! Cleaning behind the floor toilet is just the worst lol
My nieces used to do that. Leave globs of conditioner on the shower floor and hair stuck on the wall 🤬 I was always taught to rinse the shower after showering.
This is fantastic video. I’m going to save this for our bathroom Reno’s. His bathroom is left handle. His needs are different than mine. My bathroom is right handed. And I need more storage
I've never heard of those shelves that go in the grout lines. What a great idea. I'm going to incorporate those in my new bathroom. I saw this just in time! Thanks!
Remodeling my bathroom r/n and so happy that I have followed all these tips! Phew lol! I do have shiny marble tile but it’s subdued and on the wall and by the tub and my shower tile is natural stone :)))) so excited.
7:06 If you are ever in Raleigh, NC, please let me know. Seriously. I bought a brand new house (built in 2023) at the beginning of this year. I was so amazed by the incredible kitchen, I wasn’t concentrating that much on the master bathroom. Needless to say, one word can describe the master bathroom…AFTERTHOUGHT. It’s a closet, really. Ideally, I’d like to rip the whole damn thing out and start over, but don’t think it could be a possibility and would be very cost prohibitive. That said, I HATE my bathroom! My consolation is, the rest of the house is beautiful and I don’t live in my bathroom, but every time I am in it, it makes me unhappy. Thank you so much for your posts. I love your thoughts, ideas, and tips. Best wishes.
My stickable shower shelves are black metal and have been up for about 4 months now with no issues staying stuck. My shower is a cheap rental shower unit so I have no design style to sacrifice. I'm just extremely happy I have somewhere to rest my shower products now.
Love this! I do currently have the sin of tune corner extension holder AND the stick on shelves. But I also have 4 kids and two adults using the upstairs bathroom. However, I am planning on renovation of this space, and one of the things I'm dead set on is built in shelves on the tile wall.
I bought the suction cup shower shelves but I put it on my window and they worked brilliantly until the sun destroyed them. The downside it worked so well it damaged the glass and left an etch
There is a worse option about the corner shelves, they can fall on top of you, my parents had one in their bath when I was younger, and I was the poor soul that happened to be using it when that thing fell off.
I love your velvet raspberry jacket. When I bought my 728 sqft condo, the mirror in the bathroom was 9' x 4.5. Not 1 place for anything on the wall. And the banjo counter over the toilet had to go. I fixed both of those problems. Now, to get a stackable washer and dryer. I took the restrictor out of my showerhead. My hair touches the top of my pants. I still don't have enough water pressure if someone decides to do laundry prior to 8am. I have to shower early!
I leave my shower door open after shower. Have a huge shower. Brand new home. Glass window/door. I found if I leave door open it dries out faster. I also wipe it down after each use with a towel too. Bought a timer switch for vent as well so I can leave vent on 30 minutes and it shuts off later.
Instead of 3 light bulbs I have 5 above my mirror and I changed all of them to the brightest bulbs I could find. It's pretty blinding in there. I figured if I looked good in my own bathroom in the worst possible light, I'll look amazing anywhere else 😂
When you install a wall-mounted toilet, all of the structure and mechanicals are hidden behind the wall. So what do you do when something goes wrong with the internals of the toilet tank? You have to tear you wall open to fix your toilet? Do people think about this?
You did a great job on this. Really thorough compared to most. I might add a few tips to maximize the waterproofing (again preventing that dreaded black mold and rot), as well as accessibility for the disabled. Granted, not everyone gets to design the bath from scratch, but I think these are two considerations I would add to any proper bath design course, yet they're all too often overlooked. I might also add a few pointers about dealing with the toilet paper dispenser and the spacing for the toilet area and shower. I find that what is often offered as "standard" or permited is just way too small to be comfortable for adults. It seems each generation is larger than the last, so if you skimp somewhere, don't let it be there. Face it, we may not need a shower the size of NY, but at least be able to wash your hair without bumping your elbows into the walls. And every woman knows that there's times in a girl's life when space matters at the toilet. And let's not forget to plan a space for the toilet brush and plunger. While they're obviously useful, they're certainly not anybody's esthetic. You don't want to have to hunt them down when an emergency occurs.
The back lighting on the mirror may look unique but it is good for any application. Give me the overhead lights every time. They're Ok for a guest half bath. A tile floor only needs a bathrug to steady you. I like the shower arm, and the shelves. Very practical and stylish.
Thank you for this video! We are in a middle of renovation and some mistakes have been made already🙈 , running to take down that lamp that, actually, gets under my skin since day one 😅. Guess will cover the hole with oil painting 😊 or a floating shelf
Absolutely great ideas. Could you possibly do bedrooms? Open closets and shelving in bedrooms are such a popular thing here, it seems, but I dislike them. I've got serious dust alleries, and despite designers telling me it's not a dust collector, I cannot see them as anything but. Am I over-reacting?
Agreed, pretty excellent video. Happy that I did most of what you said in my tiny master bathroom which so small that only a curbless shower mad sense! I did not put in the floating toilet and vanity however. In hindsight that might’ve been a good idea, but I gotta say I always wondered how those things stayed up. I did do the Schlueter shelves in the corner of my shower for liquid body soap and I only pull but the hair wash supplies out when needed. I wish I had figured out the clever hair appliance storage you showed!
You can also add an extra outlets and put in really nice nightlights . This way you do not have to turn on the light when you go in in the middle of the night. I have one beside my toilet another one by my bathtub and then of course the one by the mirror. It looks so pretty at night.
Surprised you didn't mention the matte hardware, I got all chrome now, the black always looks dirty. The same with clear glass shower surround. I go for the weekly cleaning over the daily cleaning. Also, in a small bathroom the floating toilet and vanity, somehow make the room look bigger. An overkill on venting exhaust is a great idea. Thanks.
I don’t know when we went from two wall sconces over the sink to one giant linear one. I prefer the vintage style of two lights over the sink. I didn’t considering hanging them though. I also love the back lit mirrors too. As for a cabinet over the toilet I have learned that the head knocker cabinet is best recessed or you bumpy the toilet out if you can. If it’s no problem don’t fix it but just a tip. Do you have a kitchen design tips video? I may be a NKBA member with three years outside of college but all that you learn flys out the brain when you do a lot of things in commercial design. At the moment I’m so tempted to yank these recessed led lights in this kitchen and move them because the shadows are just atrocious when prepping meals.
I have fixed too many toilet issues in my life to ever install a wall-mounted one...they look amazing but I don't think they are practical in the long term and that is an item you can't live without!
❤ You are a true Blessing Sir! Much Gratitude for your knowledge generosity! Shiny tiles. I just bought cheap water shoes to take when I go out of town. So many people have slick tiles. And tubs with zero grip. I’ve got neuropathy from having Guillian Barre and can slip and fall. So I’ve learned my lesson now. I don’t travel anywhere without my water shoes now. Part of getting old! lol.
A silly little thing but only use plastic bottles in a bathroom, if you drop glass bottles you may break tiles, chip the shower tray or worse you end up glass shards everywhere
I too have made this grave mistake when i first thought i could trust the suction cup shelves.... lol

When I bought my home in 2003, the first I did was swap every single light switch to dimmers. Lighting is everything!
Yes! dimmers for everything, everywhere. I dont know why this hasnt become the standard
Dimmers add extra noise to sensitive electronics in the home. And, thier old tech. Use smart bulbs set up on a routine schedule.

Since I downsized on my facial skincare , hair products to 2 and makeup, we have opened up so much space up!
How about worst or best kitchen designs? This one was great!! Loads of usable ideas. Thank-you!!💞
Wow, excellent explanation 👏. I will do it . Thank you for share your knowledge
good tips! i renovated my small bathroom last summer and luckily included many of your suggestions. the in drawer oulet is a true game changer! love it! ❤❤❤
Nice tips! Very helpful!
I have one of the world's smallest bathrooms and it's been a challenge trying to upgrade it from the tiny space it is to a functioning bathroom where you don't feel like you're in a closet. Thank you for the guidance. It is most appreciated!
Love the dark walls behind you. Such a beautiful background.
We have a high ceiling in our bathroom and an overhead rain shower. We never use it. Instead, we use the handheld wand that is on the side of the shower. By the time the water reaches us from the rain shower head, it has somewhat cooled.
Dimmers are game changers in every room!
Straight talk and to the point! GoodVibes
A really good video. Other designers only tell what you should put in, including the tile. Anything that starts with function is going to be more stylish.
can we have a link to that shower thing to put bottles on please?
why did you like and not answer? where can i buy this please
Thanks!
The best pieces of advice ever!!!! Thank you very much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hi! Thank you! Happy Holidays! 🤗🥰😊
SAVING THIS! Thank you! 🙏🏼
Personally I prefer a loud fan in a toilet area. And I love the way you bookended this video, well done. And yes, more tips like this !
As long as it works, that the most important thing lol
That means a lot! thank you so much for watching. I'll definitely let you know. I do a lot of traveling to the US for my projects I have on the go
My stickable shower shelves are black metal and have been up for about 4 months now with no issues staying stuck.
😂 love your style. Great design and witty presentation
I love the Wall mounted concept.
Agree with every single point . . . and then I remember my postage-stamp size old NYC apartment bathroom and despair!
I would love to hear your opinions on laundry areas from floor to walls
Yessss on the two shower heads, bless you for finally speaking out on this
There is a worse option about the corner shelves, they can fall on top of you, my parents had one in their bath when I was younger, and I was the poor soul that happened to be using it when that thing fell off.
Which corner shelves?
Talk about the entry experience. From homeowner to guest. Like importance of coat closet and a place to sit down.
Yes! I'm always so surprised when i see people that dont consider how they live in a space and what they use to make sure that guides the design first
I love your velvet raspberry jacket.
I love that jacket! Reminds me of this great sapphire blue velvet blazer I thrifted in 9th grade. Stunning 👏
How do you feel about the toto toilets/bidets?
When we reno'd our bathroom in our forties we added a grab bar. One of the best decisions we made.
That’s like applying stage makeup if you’re using that much light.
@@woodcider It's a fine line 😂
Im Honestly in shock myself, but my stick on shower racks have lasted over 2 years. Will prob fall off tonight since i said that
When you install a wall-mounted toilet, all of the structure and mechanicals are hidden behind the wall.
Best bathroom tips and advice ever!
Thy means a lot! Thank you so much for watching 🤍
The back lighting on the mirror may look unique but it is good for any application. Give me the overhead lights every time. They're Ok for a guest half bath. A tile floor only needs a bathrug to steady you. I like the shower arm, and the shelves. Very practical and stylish.
Great!!!! How to update tx builder grade brick homes. The crazy 7 ft arched transom window is hideous but without it, no natural.light.
Great tips! Thank you 🎉
2:02 YES THANK YOU
The corner shelf killing me😂😂😂 woke up in the middle of the night. I am dead
Thanks.
So the 12” is why I’ve always thought the rainfall shower is stupid. But you had me at cleaning behind toilet - as any mother of a son can appreciate!
Love, love, love your videos!
I ADORE you and your opinions sooo much!! You're so on point😀That Beetlejuice chair hurts me tho. Does it have a back story?
I love recessed medicine cabinets! One thing to note is that on an exterior wall you can lose some insulation. 😢
My stick on bathroom sheles have been in my shower for 2.5 years and i have a small nyc bathroom with minimal ventilation
Your look is impeccable🙂
I have fixed too many toilet issues in my life to ever install a wall-mounted one...they look amazing but I don't think they are practical in the long term and that is an item you can't live without!
You won my like with that shower slip story. I also slipped in the shower so... I know how it is, LOL.
❤ You are a true Blessing Sir! Much Gratitude for your knowledge generosity! It's so very frustrating dealing with the basic pinterest focused dreamer; honestly what is so damn difficult about understanding that log8cal functionality & aesthetically appealing combinations aren't without thoughtful creative attention to intention for desired expectancy for an overall quality result doesn't just run with wtfever the latest "greatest" scroll find on the social media shorts nor the most expensive readily available just "keeping up w/ the Jones competition social standard. It's really some creativity, mindfulness & gosh darn logical reasoning.
This was brilliant, thanks
Thank you for mentioning how bad stick on shelves! I thought it's only me not knowing how to stick them on
I can’t put wall sconces on either side of the mirrors because the vanity is too close to the wall. In this case, what do you recommend?
Shiny tiles. I just bought cheap water shoes to take when I go out of town. So many people have slick tiles. And tubs with zero grip. I’ve got neuropathy from having Guillian Barre and can slip and fall. So I’ve learned my lesson now. I don’t travel anywhere without my water shoes now. Part of getting old! lol.
