    I have been grieving the loss of my GSD Kemper for the past week, but I honestly had a brief moment of relief when I laughed when the vet gave me a lock of his hair. I already have many all over the place. I love you, Kemper. I miss you so much.

    my GSD had a lot of energy. a 1hr walk would not tire her out. I had to take her along for bike rides with me. it was literally the only way to get her to come home and chill out for the rest of the day. She learnt what turn left, right, slow down and stop meant. She always got so excited when i pulled out the old bike

    My first dog is a shepherd, and I'll admit I wasn't prepared for the reactivity. Super smart, great at obedience, but teaching him to chill out has been a wild ride. We got a husky last year, a breed generally considered much harder to train, and it's been way easier to be honest. Temperament is so critical, and I never met the shepherd's parents. Definitely wish I had, i think it'd explain a lot of our struggles.

    White shepherds tend to be timid at least here in Europe. Should not be by the standard, but about 40% are. We had one large female, otherwise a perfect family dog also with little kids and even babies, but not comfortable with strangers.
    About exercise: the more the better. few miles is ok, but they could (and would like to) run 40 miles every day if they had a chance.
    Feeding: kibble sacks have approximate amounts per day printed on the back, depending on the size of the puppy and what the grown up weight is likely to be. About 400 grams per day for a 8-12 months old growing GSD, after that somewhat less. Depends on activity and the calorie content of the feed.

    As much as I love the GSD, ended up with a Malinois ‘cause of the shedding problems with the GSD. Wouldn’t recommend Malinois for sure, but from what I’ve seen GSD/Mal mix if bred correctly can help with the shedding and health problems of the German Shepherd, decreasing the neurological problems of the Mal, getting a bit of the Malinois look, and having much more of the German Shepherd’s temperament. If you don’t like the idea of the shedding of the GSD i’d suggest looking for a well bred Doberman.

      Agreed. The right mix and turnout is key. I've seen them look like GSD but act like malinois. We're training one now that looks like malinois but acts 100% like Shepherd. Malinois coat as well.

    From what I understand, the reason the AKC doesn’t recognize white German Shepherds is because they're supposed to be herding dogs, and the white color makes them look to much like sheep and the sheep won't react to the shepards well enough with the white color. Whereas "livestock guardian dogs" like the Pyrenees are supposed to look white so the sheep don't react to them so much.
    I wonder if this is an outdated way of thinking though, since most working GSDs arent used for herding any more.

    • @primalcritters
      @primalcritters 2 года назад

      You're thinking of the poorly bred show line. Working line German Shepherds don't have those problems and the white German shepherds are specifically bred more like working lines in structure but larger. Their temperament tends to be a little lower Drive than a pure working line though

    • @Steve-ci1kj
      @Steve-ci1kj 2 года назад +1

      @@primalcritters well I know it’s much more drastic with the show lines, but I thought working lines can also have it somewhat. I’m no expert though.

    • @AmericanStandardK9
      @AmericanStandardK9  2 года назад +2

      No I would say generally not. Real working line Shepherds will have flat back. There are some dogs with half show line half working line so they have the slant back and the "nice looks" but can somewhat do the work.

    • @primalcritters
      @primalcritters 2 года назад +1

      @@Steve-ci1kj no, not at all. The working lines look just like this dog. If a working line dog does it then that's a very poorly bred Shepherd because most working line dogs if you see them walking around are straight topped

    The more accurate name is "German Shedder". They generate hair like nobody's business. Your hands and arms look like a gorilla when you bathe them, even after brushing. When we had company coming down for the weekend, we'd brush our German Shedder at least 3X over the 4-6 days prior, each each time it would easily fill up a Wal-Mart bag. In the spring we would just let the hair blow around the back yard and leave it for the birds to build their nests. We had to put our Shephard down in September 2022, and the only thing I don't miss is the crazy amount of hair everywhere.

    I love love love the white German Shepherd. Grandparents bred them when I was younger and had one as a toddler+ and she was my best friend. Had one as a young adult and she was a dream too. Grandpa on the other side had several as I grew up and most were dumplings because he always had one and lived in the country. They were mostly some variety of black and tan and even had a red and black dropped off. All were good dogs and had about two acres to run. The only one that had actual aggression issues was the red and black but you know, redheads. I also think it was the way he'd been treated previously. He loved my grandpa and listened and allowed me as a preteen to dig in his mouth to remove a bone that had become lodged in his mouth. After that he was extremely conflicted as to who he wanted to protect more. I will never have a negative thing to say about the breed, they just need to be treated and trained right.
