Growing up in a Navy town many years ago I picked this up from an old salt who had learned it from WW2 guys. It’s a slip knot with the free end run through and then turned inside out! You’re the only other person I’ve run into that knows how to do it this way. He taught us to throw the end of the rope around our waist and tie the knot around us in a couple seconds or less.
I also love how knots are packed full of memories 😉 😉 😉 Thanks for taking the time to share this information, I always love to hear about knots and cordage being used in action!
@@KnottingKnots His story was they used it to retrieve swimmers under fire after they had done their survey work on a beach before a landing. Must have been one of their earlier efforts because I believe they had a slicker system during the heavy push in the Pacific. He was pretty good with a rope and I remember at least a couple of them!

We use in yacht racing. Use that setup be for using a climbing harness on a halyard to swing out to the free end of a sail that needs a new line attached. Slip through the crinkle, tuck into the prep loop and tug on the tail as you swing back to the deck. We call it the Ninja bowline.

I know this as a pirates knot. Pirates used to tie the slip knot above their flag, pass the haul line through the slip knot and pull their flag up, when at the top a sharp tug collapses the slip knot and someone needs to climb up to remove it
Oh weird. Ive been doing this for years. Didnt know it was a special shortcut method. To me it just seemed like quick way. I use a truckers hitch and then collapse it on itself.. Pretty much as in video

Very cool. However, after more than 40 years on the water professionally, and years as a fire fighter, Ive never needed to tie a bowline any faster than the way I was taught back in 1979. Nice to know though
To be honest, it is just a trick type knot, but for some reason people seem to love them. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
That is not how we learn in the Boy Scouts. It was make a loop, the rabbit (end of the rope) comes out of the hole...around the tree and back down the hole.
When you do this up to normal speed, it would still be the slowest way to tie a bowline that I know. Even a one-handed bowline can be tied in one second. Just saying.

That is nothing but ridiculous. I can a tie a bowline 10 times faster than that. With preparing the rope and then actually tying the knot you might as well just tie a bowline.

It’s our goto method of bowline, it’s also essentially a Marlin spike hitch ending up as bowline, and sheetbend can be tied using the same method.
