I too was devastated to learn that MDR-J10 has been discontinued. One other option, besides the ones that you tried, is JVC HAEB75. Its similar fit (not as good) as MDR J-10, plus they *claim* that its splash proof.

I, too, have been using and loving the Sony j10 for years and years. Thanks for your video. I just misplaced one of my last pairs of j10, and popped onto Ebay, thinking I could pick up a few more. Ouch! They're now from $30 to over a hundred! Sony, bring them back!

Thank you so much for this video. You have basically answered every single question I had about finding a replacement for my broken Sony MDR-J10s in a single video.

If Sony came out with a wireless pair of earbuds shaped exactly like the MDR-J10, I would pay good money for those. They were literally the one comfortable earbuds I've ever used in my life, I loved them.

Are you listening Sony? The people's money has spoken... we want the Jay-tens back... look ppl are paying $50 (USD) on them... bring em back, we will pay for them... do it now before you lose the tooling and have to make new molds and what not.

Thanks so much for this video. I also have gone through 3-4 pairs of the MDR J10. I do have a pair of the MDR AS210, but got so frustrated trying to put them on, that I quit using them. I cut them down like you explained , and I now love them. I'm going to buy a couple more pair before they decide to discontinue them too.
    Thank you so much!!

@@jamesb72 Hi fellow "James." I actually go by the nickname of "Jim." But anyway, do you know why Sony discontinued manufacturing the MDR-J10 model of headphones?
I must have bought at least five pairs of the Sony MDR-J10 in-ear with ear hook headphones over the years, to my recollection usually selling for a list price of between $10.00-15.00. That this model of Sony's best lightweight headphones is now selling on Amazon and eBay for $40+ is obscene, even if the model is discontinued. Yet if one has lost one's last pair of the J10 or would like to have a pair that is superior to what Sony now offers for ear hook headphones, then paying an exorbitant price is the only option (save for your advice to snip the AS210) for the time being, at least until Sony or another manufacturer produces a similar or better model of ear hook headphones.
I would frequently either lose or misplace my pairs of the J10, as I have with headphones generally, as well cigarette lighters, pens and umbrellas all through my adult life. But at this point I have given up the notion of holding on to certain items for very long anyway, and concluded I am merely paying to rent them.
I just recently found one pair of headphones in my home I think are the MDR-J10, although with no packaging, so cannot tell for sure if it is the J10 model, since I could see no printing on the actual headphones. But as it has the Sony branding on it and is the open ear hook type, I suspect it is the J10 model. I also have an inclination I have another pair of the J10 headphones someplace in my home. But my place is in such disarray I would probably only find the other pair of the J10 by chance sometime, when looking for something else. So you can be sure now I am planning to hold on for dear life to my only currently known pair of the J10 and will try to keep them in a safe place.
I agree with you the Sony MDR-J10 headphones were definitely the best design of lightweight headphones I had found over about a three decades' period since I had my very first Sony Walkman circa 1982, with many inferior headphones models discarded or lost by myself over that period of time.
But I think my very favorite headphones model (if one is still using wired, non-Bluetooth headphones) is the bulkier but more comfortable (and with an adequate seal around the ears for a better sound) Sony MDR-ZX110, which now includes an "Ultra Soft Travelers Pouch" and comes in black and white colors, listing for $17.49 on Amazon.
I have had two pairs of these over-the-head Sony ZX100 series headphones in more recent years. I lost my first pair (given me as a Christmas gift) when I either dropped or left them behind on the seat of a Boston subway train. I still have my replacement pair of the Sony ZX100, but cannot find them in the mysterious "black hole" of misplaced items in my home. To be fair to myself, though, I do have several health issues (including prostate cancer) now which interfere with my keeping my home as neat and orderly as was once possible. And I am too poor to afford a housecleaner. So my life these days seems to be spent living among a maze of my belongings, some not as easily accessible as was once the case.
I have also read several consumer posts about headphones on Amazon, including a few from professional disc jockeys who swear by any of the Sony MD line of headphones in terms of both budget and quality,
Anyway, from a perusal of the currently available MDR-ZX100 series of Sony headphones, the best quality model without spending too much money seems to me to be this ZX110 model, which includes the portable storage pouch. The ZX100 headphones are collapsible, which works nicely for portability and relatively easy storage. They are available in black and white, the black costing a bit less than the white model ($17.49 vs. $17.99). One may purchase these Sony ZX headphones models with or without microphones and audio volume controls attached, according to one's needs, obviously spending a bit more for the more features one will require.
I hope all or some of this is helpful to other users of Sony budget cost headphones. And thank you for your post and video, James.

I've been using MDR-J10's for twenty years, I've spent the last several years with them discontinued replacing them at my own expense with Chinese wholesale multipacks (I think I last did a replacement for 3 pair in 2018 and the price has tripled since then?), so doing the 210's with the backs snipped will really save me a lot of money, thank you for the suggestion to do that. MOST people can either fit the loops, or the ear buds in their ears, but on the current market if neither works for you, then you are screwed. This helps us SO Much.

Good video! I definitely miss the J10s. Used to wear em all the time. I think another pair you should look into are the Sony MDR-J11G h.ear. I bought those recently and imo they're the most similar to the J10s and are relatively cheap at $35 (compared to $100+ for J10s).

  • @WillLightfoot

It didn't occur to me that cutting the loop off would make them fit better. Good call. I've been upset that I can't get the Mdr-j10s anymore for quite a while.

keep the plastic frames if you still have them, you can reconstruct a new pair using MDR AS210 plastic covers and speakers, ad a cable with microphone and now you have a pair of custom headphones that are very confortable and with good quality at a cheap price

I still miss the J10 phones.
I am clumsy, so they always get wrecked in a matter of months.
I currently go through the JVC Gumy ones, but Sony has better sound quality.
Obviously the J10 & J20 stay put a lot better.

It sucks that they discontinued such great headphones. All these companies just ruin what isn't broken. I did the same and cut the newer version but it's just not the same.

Nice job of thinking outside the box. I really like the fact that Sony phones are not blaring directly into my ear canal.

I really want to use the new Sonys but I'm allergic to rubber and latex. :C the j10s were the only earbud that worked for my walk to work. Now I'm stuck paying premium dollar on ebay for the only type of headphone that 1. has good sound 2. doesn't block necessary warning noises 3. won't fall out of my ear 4. won't close my airway due to allergy

Did anyone ever told Sony how bad the MDR-AS210 are? I mean we shouldn't have to cut it to make it easy to use.

@@jamesb72 Lets stop making the MDR-J10 and make ones that only fits on small ears. Great idea Sony. I tested the MDR-AS210. The sound is not as good as the MDR-J10.

Hey James your modified mdr as210 I think you cut them too high. Try just cutting at the bottom closest to the wire and headphone as possible because I think you cut the part that makes it stay snug to your ear. The next pair I get I'm making 1 single cut right near the bottom of the headphone. The ones I have now I cut about a half inch of rubber off and they stay on great. So I thought why not just keep that extra half inch it will probably stay on even better. Thank you again for this video I would have never thought to do that

    Hi James,
Thanks for posting this video. It's really valuable.
I tried the MDR-210AS and they are really comfortable. They don't go deep into the ear canal which helps me with my problem - I can't insert any earbuds as I get ear infections immediately (have very sensitive skin).
Have you found any wireless headphones that are similar to the ones presented in the video, in terms of how deep they go into the ear canal - i.e. being just on the outside like MDR-210 AS?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Warm regards,
    Luka

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72  5 лет назад

Thanks Luka, I also like the Sony's being outside ear so I can hear traffic etc when walking to work, I'd say the Sony MDS-210 are the best for this, as the others all stick into the ear more - I guess the other options are over ear traditional headphones?

What do you mean the skullcandy chops with the wire in the earphone are fake? They show them like this literally on the skullcandy youtube channel. I don't know why yours are different.

  • @crazymem13
    @crazymem13 4 года назад

Also once you cut them I don't think the snug part will bother your ear cause it will be loose when you cut it check my comment below or above
