All that mattered was the soul connection you had with the singer and song writer. The lyrics were timeless and always about real love in some way. The echo on his voice in the chorus takes me away to another existence. This is perhaps my favorite Luther song.. (but there are so many of them). I was always blown away by his voice, it took me a while to realize what incredible arrangements and the excellence of the players.
