I would build a nice brick seat wall as the retaining wall so you can sit. Convert it to an outdoor fireplace area. Put some nice stone or sand around the fireplace with chairs on one side and the seat wall on the other. Throw some posts up around the perimeter with lights hanging.

Ive done this kind of work and IMO no wall is needed. Get a half yard of gravel and a half yard of loom delivered and make yourself a little garden. Put the gravel down first to bring the base up. Use a tamper.
