I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
Man that was cool just tossing that reel to those kids. Moments like that can turn a kids life around. I applaud you for that . Keep up the awesome vids
I'd like to see a "how to" video on choosing rod length and action for different baits and what to use an open face reel with vs bait caster. I think the information in a video like that could have a lot of great information for young/new anglers who are just starting their fishing journey. Keep on keeping on Man. I watch your videos every day, always great content!
I bought my first bait caster 4 years ago. Walmart Shakespeare combo special!!!! Thing was a piece , broke , and returned it the same day! Did a ton of research and went with the Daiwa Tatula SV TW. Freaking love that reel, bought a few more and different style tatula’s. Glad to see you using these reels too. Definitely worth spending the money right off the bat.
Love my Black Max reel, I’ve had it for 3 years and seems to have held up pretty well for the amount of fishing I do. Now the rod on the other hand, need to get 3 of the eyes replaced because the ceramic rings have broken but other than that it works for me. Favorite videos are the tournaments or do it mold videos.
Lots of super cheap reels work just fine out of the box for a while. Endurance is the magic denominator. After putting them to work for a while, months of beating around in the rod box, and a couple servicing sessions (disassembly, reassembly) is the point where cheap reels reveal their defects. A good reel still casts like butter after years of heavy use.
Ben you got me hooked on 6th sense lures. I caught my pb January 13th 2019 which I have yet to break. I caught it on a blacklight swim jig. I live in Florida and my boss at bass pro at the time said that a swim jig would do no good here during the spawn. Well needless to say I made him look like a fool when I came to work 2days later with my pb of 7lbs15oz.
Reely enjoyed today’s video. Goes to show that you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to get started in bait casting . Longevity is a different issue . Just remember that if you want to have a successful experience with a baitcaster you MUST set it up properly. Don’t just put line on it and cast without be fully adjusted . Great videos and keep them coming .
Just took my almost 3 year old fishing for the first time the other day and he had a blast! Its been years since I'd even thrown a line out myself but my son has made me want to get out a lot now. Would love to see more videos with Max and the pond you've been managing. Never used a baitcaster before but would love to try one!
I just want to see lots of bass fishing without the dissing of all the other brands just because you use Shimano doesn't mean everybody likes them I've been an avid lews Guy for 5 years and I've never had any problems I live in Texas and caught multiple double digits I can send you pics if you need them for proof that Lew's get the job done
Okay so I just started using bait casters like a year ago. And the two that I have are black maxes. Which I have to be honest they work pretty well. But like I did say I am new to the game. 😂 But dude love your vids, keep them coming. Here’s a video idea , how about arc boat fishing challenge. 😂
If you want to spend just a bit more my opinion is silver max combo is the BEST combo for the money. I have caught 5-8lbers on it and it has given me ZERO problems!!!!! Still my #1 RUclips fishing guy!!!!
Great video! I have been a costa sunglass guy for past 10 years... I’m tired of them tearing up! Got me some water land optics on the way! Be here any day! Very excited!
I want to see some "new lake" fishing. Start off with a map/Navionics/Google Earth. Say when, where, why, how, you're going to fish it. Then fish it. End it with a wrap on how it went.
@Trenton Johnson Here in Texas, WAY back in time (like 40 years ago) there was this guy who really (for people who actually like REAL information) sort of revolutionized the way bass fishing shows were done. Back then, almost all bass fishing shows were really mostly one long infomercial. If you got any information out of them, it was really probably accidental. There was a guide here that scraped up enough money to buy the required (extremely bare minimum) equipment to do a show. As far as pure VIDEO quality, most RUclipsrs using just a cell phone or a Go-Pro, produce MUCH better quality video than this guy did, BUT he had a unique idea. Give at least SOME, REAL, USABLE information. Don't get me wrong, this guy had to pimp his show just like everybody else, BUT he actually slipped in some real information. Back then, almost all fishing video were 30 minutes. Out of that 30 minutes, 10 minutes were completely dedicated to ACTUAL commercials. Then, of the remaining 20 minutes of the show, half of that was "on show" commercials (which is much like you see now, like with this show). After all that, you were really only left with 10 minutes to impart anything useful, but you had to subtract announcements, introductions, mindless banter, so in the end (assuming it's not a Bill Dance show where the entire 30 minutes was one long infomercial where he's using the latest and greatest lure that is really a hook attached to a bottle cap, but he's fishing a canned phosphate pit that's private and is insanely stocked and managed with huge fish with no pressure where he really could have just used the hook and been just as successful catching fish, but I digress) you had about 5 minutes to learn anything. Jerry Dean, who had been a guide on one of the popular East Texas lakes for many years, decided to actually do a show where you could actually learn something. Don't get me wrong, he had his obligatory 10 minutes of pure commercials just like everyone else, plus he also had plugs in his content, but it was things he really used on PUBLIC waters. His premise was to do a show in a way/format that your average weekend angler does every weekend. He'd start the segment that was actually show before he went fishing in which he'd use a big blown up paper map to show where he THOUGHT he was going to fish, what techniques/lures/etc he was going to use. Next, would be what he actually did on the water which usually matched up to what he'd shown in the beginning part of the show, but if that wasn't working, he wasn't afraid to call an "audible" and he'd explain why he did. The last part of the show was a recap back in front of the map. He'd show where he fished, what techniques he used, why what he did worked, or if he was wrong, why it DIDN'T work. It was kind of the first REAL "fishing" show, and to this day, it's still unique, even though the show and the guy are long gone. The most unique thing about it for its time, was it was all filmed on ONE day, done each week on a different lake, and most importantly, was the results. If he fished and it was snowing, you saw it. If it was raining, you saw the rain. If he loaded the boat with bass, you saw it. Most real of all, was that if he ZEROED, he showed getting skunked. While the show was very amateurish as far as the actual video/filming quality, it was the first (and mostly only) show I've seen that showed the reality of fishing that all of us face, every time we go fishing. Why this format has never been replicated by any of the big RUclipsrs is totally beyond me. With today's video quality available to most everyone, the video quality would be 100 times better than this guys show ever was, PLUS, and most importantly, you'd get real information you could actually use.
I was one of those people who didn't want to spend much on my first baitcaster. So I got a Shakespeare rod and reel combo off amazon for $25. Worst freakin' reel ever. The rod was ok I guess. My first upgrade was to a $40 Bass Pro reel, which worked ok for a year before it went wonky. Upgrade from there I was hesitant to get because of all the flack it gets. Abu Garcia's Black Max. (Got it for $32 on walmart's website) I've had that for almost a year now. Yeah, it's not a fantastic reel, but it gets the job done and it is worlds better than what I had before. And now I have an SLX DC. That was the biggest game changer for me. It's helped me get better at skippipng, pitching and flipping. Can't wait to try out more brands. Thinking of trying out 13 Fishing's reels next.
For years I have laughed at people that go out and spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on fishing equipment. I buy less expensive gear and rarely leave the lake disappointed.
I got my wife hooked on your channel and we binge watched all your videos over 3months while we were in quarantine! We need more Zark! We also miss him singing the outro song! Stupid copyright crap lol keep doing what you do!
Glad to see this video, I have never had a baitcaster, and I am lost in the woods on how to choose one. Happy to see that there is a decent prices entry model with the black max... Thanks
Man you guys brought the fisherman back out in me. I haven’t fished in years and stumbled by one of ur videos and been watching every single one since. Also I started fishing again and I’m loving it I’ve missed it so much thank you brotha.
Good video. Great job giving that kid a reel. My 8 y.o watches all your vids. He finally learned how to use a baitcaster and is getting pretty good with it. He might be getting one for his birthday next month
One thing about the black max is that it will take a couple of fishing trips to break it in. Once it's been used a couple of times it cast better sounds. And you will find that it's pretty good for the price. I have a black max on my ST.croix mojo frog rod. And over the years i have got lots of big fish and no issues with the reel
I like seeing the tournament videos and I started watching while at work and it got me back into fishing with my friends. Thank you for bring such a great vlogger/RUclipsr and for making me laugh and smile during these times.
Awesome video! I would love to see a kid fishing pole challenge (Disney special)! I am looking to get my daughters more excited about fishing and this kind of video would be right up their alley!!! Keep up the great work!
Awesome Video as usual!!! I had a BlackMax for a couple of years and I couldn't complain about it until finally the worm guide and thumb button broke. you keep it clean and well lube it will last you for a long time. But you're right, I have a couple high end Shimano Reels and the casting is just incredible. Wouldn't mind getting another BlackMax to substitude my old mine RIP. Any video you put out there I Like Man!! Tight Lines!! Don't pick on Coleslaw so Much!! LOL!!
The fishing you do is as far away from the fishing I do as possible (Which isn't a surprise given I'm in England) but I freaking love your videos! Keep up the good work Sir!!
I still use a bass pro shop Bill Dance combo and have for the last 20 years. it was $165 and has caught everything from 1lb Large mouth to a 35lb Spoonbill. It still catches stripers with ease. The difference is like you said durability and if you fish everyday for hours on end it wont hold up. I fish maybe 50 times a year cause some of us have jobs. Keep stickin em.
I am slowly upgrading my reels and you do get what you pay for. I have two Shimano SLX HG’s that are like butter. There is a place for the cheaper price reels, but over time, it’s worth paying more for the higher quality reels.
I just went and bought my first cast master reel and I caught a small small mouth bass. I trout fish mostly and I was hooked after I felt the fight of a bass. Wow what a difference. I have been watching every video sence I found this channel about a year ago.

Hey the revo is an awesome reel for the money too
I have two of the baitcasters and one of the spinning reels. I also have two SilverMax spinning reels. They're great for the price.
I've had a Black Max and Vendetta combo for about 5 years now and have no issues.
Michael Fry I agree with you.
I love my black MAX reels. I e had them for years never had any issues with them
Try the pflueger monarch!! really good for the price. I love it. took almost no time to get it dialed in
These conversation between Cole and Ben are frickin hilarious.

I just went and bought my first cast master reel and I caught a small small mouth bass. I trout fish mostly and I was hooked after I felt the fight of a bass. Wow what a difference. I have been watching every video sence I found this channel about a year ago.
Caught my pb 10.1 lbs on a black max and my cousin has many on his boat and he’s one of the most intelligent anglers I’ve ever heard 🤷♂️
Nice
