  • Scholars often argue World War I served as the perfect crucible for Hitler’s rise to power. Award-winning author Thomas Weber thinks otherwise. Join us as he discusses the dictator’s formative experiences as a soldier, demonstrating how and why he aggressively policed the myth of his wartime experiences. Examining Hitler’s political epiphany in 1919, Weber shows how the path from 1918-19 to Auschwitz was far less twisted than commonly believed.
Presented in conjunction with the centennial exhibition Crucible: Life & Death in 1918.
Presented in partnership with the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education and the National Archives at Kansas City.

Well, I understand the criticisms that others have made here but, I also appreciate that this gentleman is apparently trying to get at the genuine Hitler. I think we should all cut him some slack & remember that in the end, he has contributed to the body of knowledge regarding one of history’s most evil & equally fascinating characters. My only criticism is that I wish there’d been more substance to the lecture. My favorite is still John Toland’s book on Hitler. There’s just so much trivial, yet nitty gritty details that it almost reads like a novel. It was the first time I’d really began to focus on the world Adolf grew up in & realized that anti-Semitic and anti-Slavic views were quite pervasive at the time in much of Europe. This alone helps to put the question of “How could people buy into these ideas?” into perspective.

At 20.21 does Weber say 'unwillling echo board'? Did he meant unwitting? And what is an echo board?

"Rear area pig" Adolf Hitler was sent in Oct 1918 for a long trip to Pasewalk military hospital which was only for mental cases.

Yeah..a full 10 minutes of waffle before the bit you clicked on starts. But it turns out to be yet another crow-barred in reference to anything American.

Apropos 1914 picture, did Hitler really have that kind of tooth brush mustache then? Quit diffrent from the Wilhelmina he had later in ww1. I think its Photoshop.
