  • In the second episode of our journey into FFXIV side-stories, we hit another fan favorite: Stormblood Alchemist, perhaps the story in the live game most indebted to a 1.0 story. Today, we learn the one unifying theory connecting every FFXIV story about necromancy, Amaranth discovers the biggest smallest criminal in Ul'dah, and Cleretic complains about Shadowbringers and Endwalker forcing her to cook, instead of 'cook'.

The Heartstrike gem was lost on screen in 1.0. It shatters and might still have shards there on the floor in the Ossuary. Depends on how often and thoroughly they sweep in there.
And yes, the Elezen in red is from1.0. Niellefresne's brother.

      A MYSTERY SOLVED, THANK YOU
I knew he had to be important somehow, but I completely lacked context and didn't have the focus to google at the time (which I totally did as a strategic mercenary decision to drive engagement later because I am a genius)

Emett's body is quite literally a puppet on strings. He doesn't care to pretend to be a person, he is puppeting a corpse of the last guy that he was puppeting.

I remembered the boss fight againstt Mumuepo in Halatali (Hard) and vaguely recalled some details about him being imprisoned there for being a bad dude, but didn't realize he was was prolific in his crimes. He gets nameddropped again in Bozja. Apparently he kicked Abeleo out of the THM guild by Mumuepo for 'acts of unspeakable cruelty.' I guess he was a better person then.

The interesting thing about Mumuepo is that despite all those crimes, he wasn't actually that evil from what I could tell. Either he was really good at keeping up a positive public facade, or he was genuinely quite moral about parts of his job... just not the parts about not committing crimes.

Crime is a matter of legality more than morality, after all! Some very moral people commit horrible crimes. I mean. That's like, the entire plot of the Lupin III TV show from part 2 onward.

This was a fun listen! If i can share about Bronze Bull, he's also the NPC we speak to about Halatali Hard and who escorts us through the monster gallery. He fights us in the Paladin stormblood quest line as an Ul Cup competitor, and i think if you did the blacksmith quest before that part, he actually uses the sword you made for him. I'm not sure if he uses it too during the alchemist quest.
About the alchemy and culinary pairing, i personally think it works if the context is medicine and nutrition--in this case, nutrient supplements or infusions for the Melvin Bread (i think that's what it was called), but i do agree it is still weird.
Oh to add one more thing, i think having an episode about missed opportunities is a great idea if you wanna break up the flow of side quests! It might not have to be a separate thing entirely

Bronze Bull actually doesn't ever draw his sword in SB ALC (he's actually unarmed hen he intimidated the guards into giving up, which is even more impressive); I don't remember Blacksmith well enough to say if the sword on his hip is the one we made for him.

jokes on you, i paid attention to every job quest as i did them, even the "boring" ones. so i didnt miss the juicy set ups for things like ALC
i dont mean that seriously, im glad i caught the next ep of the podcast. the ALC quest this references still haunts me to this day. as right before i finished HW and [redacted] [redacted] my own dad died. creating a feedback loop of grief and also catharsis. so Severian's question at the end of this quest still haunts me

Okay I legit knee slapped laughed at the used more then a power ranger quarry mile joke.
Also yes please do a missed opportunity quest. I'll start. Not using the wolf men but rather the namzu in Stormblood.
Oddly my fav crafter storylines are all tied to culinarian.

Funnily enough, while I do know that the namazu were a later idea for the tribe quests in Stormblood, it wasn't the lupin they replaced: it was the qiqirn. That's why they have that ziggurat in the Fringes! It's impossible to tell how much of those ideas were recycled for the qitari in Shadowbringers, but I have to assume at least some of it was.

@@EinDose can see but the nazmu where painful to deal with. Reminded me of a bad comedy where the stand up is just failing to get a chuckle.

I suspect that one of the reasons the Lupin weren't a rep faction in Stormblood is the "well, we already have two combat job factions planned, and we're only doing 3 factions per expansion now" factor. Thematically, I think they'd have replaced the Ananta; they aren't the same story arc, but would hit a similar set of beats in the whole "reclaiming Imperial territory/infrastructure" and "dismantling a militant subculture into something more uplilfting". It would be very interesting to see how the Lupin would have worked as the Hand/Land faction though... possibly a reshuffle, placing either Ananta or Kojin as DoH/L, with Lupin being combat?
Still, I do sincerely hope we see more of our shaggy boys. Square is way better than, say, Blizzard at things like "remembering earlier zones and factions *exist* in future expansions" so I hope we'll have some Lupin friends on the Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

@@AmaranthWitch I thought the Lupin and the Doman restoration would have been one and the same myself. Or the Anata could have been the land and hand job building the bridge base up. I am glad Shadow Bringers split it to 1 combat, 1 land and 1 hand tribal, feels better for a flow then HW and Blood's 2 combat and moosh land and hand together. Like as someone that doesn't mind Cul and Alc fused I felt putting all non combat into one tribal story didn't flow to well for pacing. Also I don't say Dawn Treader or Dawn Trail my partner is a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls game so I auto fill in Dawn Guard. But I'm a guy asking for more undead and necromancer as a job so I might be a bit baised to think about vampires anytime someone says dawn.
