The Anglia Knight was originally a sporting trophy commissioned by King Willem III of the Netherlands for the Falcon Club back in 1850. 109 years later, an Anglia chairman spotted it in the window of a London Jeweler and the rest is history.
I grew up in the Lakenheath/Eriswell area and always loved this ident. Back then we only had four channels and I am thankful for that, because it meant we didn't sit around watching TV all day.
I live in the North West of England and 'Sale of the Century' was shown here in the Manchester area by Granada; that and 'Survival' are the only programmes I can remember that were shown across the ITV network by Anglia in the 1970's and early 80's.
Very different to all the other ITV logos. The sequence is beautiful and the classical music goes really well. I was surprised to find out Anglia were still using the knight in 1988.
No Doubt but we in the South West had the GOLDEN HIND, Drakes wonderful galleon for Westward TV, AND we didn't need the Handelean music to highlight it.
@@grahamnancledra7036 I had forgotten about the Golden Hind as Westward's logo. It must have been a sad day when Westward went off the air. I live in the Central region and I don't think I can remember a single TSW programme being networked, apart from when Highway was filmed in the south west
@@Matt571 There were a few; Some from the About Britain Series, a few plays, documentaries and for the kids Tube Mice, and the notorious That's My dog. Sublime, magestic, wonderful, iconic. Brings back happier memories of childhood long past and the shows that came on straight after this ident that my ITV franchises, TVS, LWT and Thames would show if they were made by Anglia Television...I wish the old ITV franchises would be brought back with the IBA as a more stringent broadcasting regulator and broadcaster. ITV today is utter garbage by comparsion.
I'm from Westward/TSW land. The first time I saw the first full Anglia ident I was "WOW". I still think we in the South West had the best regional TV service.
Just to correct a misapprehension, this isn't an ident as such, this was Anglia's startup film. You'd only see this when it opened up for the day's broadcasting. The actual ident used in front of programmes was only 7 seconds.
They didn't show this long version before programmes (thankfully!). It was generally shown at 9.25am when Anglia TV programming began after TV-AM finished.
@@prappsy3028 In the early 60s, this followed the _Quick March (Vaughan Williams' Sea Songs)_ before programming from mid-afternoon until ~11pm. Later, with schools' broadcasting, etc., the pattern changed a lot.

The height of 1950's technology. Shame it was shot in 1970 :P Genuinely though, this thing is a vague memory of mine from maybe the mid 80's. No idea where I saw it though, because I'd assume it was phased out by then.
This intro brings back memories of when I was a kid. However, if it was to be made today, that flag would be rainbow-colored, and the knight would have big rubber lips, a bone through his nose, and he would be wearing a grass skirt.
When England was proud of men like the Black Prince, and Georgian London with Handel composing this masterpiece. The late 20th century was the slow death of pride in our identity.
This ident is more entertaining than any of the so-called 'programmes' on ITV today.
I couldn't agree more
For fuck's sake lads 🙄

OP, with Alan Partridge?
Grand music, an outstanding sequence, it tells you that you're really watching Anglia.
I went to uni in Norwich and was in the student tv service - we paid a visit to Anglia House and saw the knight in the foyer!
Very different to all the other ITV logos. The sequence is beautiful and the classical music goes really well. I was surprised to find out Anglia were still using the knight in 1988.
Just saying, 1988 was the year Anglia retired the knight and horse ident

Wow. Lovely to hear and see the “long” Anglia ident again after so many years. Top notch. Modern so called idents are bland and eminently forgettable.
I love classic ITV!
Apparrently this is now on display in the reception of Anglia House. I am going to make a pilgrimage there, because this is the ident for the ages.
