ERRATA : I indicate in the video that this is the G2 dock when it's in fact the newer G4 dock. Otherwise the rest of the details of the video are correct and accurate.
It is beyond me why Apple absolutely refuses to support DisplayPort MST. I am really glad to see you can still dual display with this dock, excellent review as always. Thank you good sir, I may actually get one of these.
You are talking about company that encourage buyers to buy both mac mini for stationary desk setting and macbook for use on the go. They don't provide themselves desktop docking station (though they may be selling 3rd party's) but usb-c HDMI dongle with power-passthrough and USB-A.
Excuse my silly question.. Will a G2 version charge my 2019 omen. I think it will damage thunderbolt port cause its not design to deliver power through this port. I’m considering buying one to expand usb ports, not charging my laptop.
I have used very cheap docks for years (sadly I have a little collection) but recently bought a really nice, expensive one and a couple of things I noticed have nothing to do with performance but are really nice: a long cable to the PC so the dock can be positioned out of the way on the desk, and heft so the dock doesn't slide around. I'm glad to see you noted how long the PC to dock cable was.
The HP G4 dock actually has two network NIC's built-in, 1 Gbit/s Realtek for a USB C host, and 2.5 Gbit/s Intel for a Thunderbolt host. I would expect the Macbook to use the 2.5 Gbit/s Intel NIC.
Great review. Nothing beats my Elgato TB3 Pro dock. So good I bought two of them. You can’t but that dock anymore but damn it has so many ports and features that none of these new TB4 ports provide. Waiting for Elgato to release a new version but in the meantime their older TB3 Pro does everything I need it to.
We’ve deployed over 400 of these the last two years in our company. The firmware is now mature enough I can recommend them. They were a bit of a dumpster when they were first released before the TB3 firmware and drivers evolved. If you want something that is super reliable and just works the HP USB-C G5 is great and will run on anything.
Hi Lon, Informative Video. Thank you. Have you ever tried connecting an LG 5K Ultrafine monitor to an HP G4 Thunderbolt Docking Station w/ 280W? Did that work for you?
Can't get it to work with my Dell monitor. Tried HDMI and DP. Monitor works fine when connected to the HP laptop directly. Any tips? Did update the Firmware.
Thanks for the review Lon. I'd love to see you review the new Logi Dock. Its got a speakerphone built in, and that combination would rrally simplify my messy desk area quite a lot.
Decent plug and play avenue for a high powered laptop into a productivity setup. Hard to justify cost unless you have adequate revenue tied to workflow. Could definitely see this used by a professional photo/video editor or engineer using CAD.
Currently I get HP USB-C G5 for my 2019 MBP and using HDMI+DP with two external monitors but notice it's mirroring not extended.(going to return it) My question is for HP Thunderbolt G4 Dock, is it possible connect one Thunderbolt(input) to MBP and connect with one Thunderbolt(output) of G4 and HDMI/DP to another monitor and get extended dual monitors, still only one Thunderbolt connection to MBP for convenience. ( I guess it works as it's how Thunderbolt daisy-chain works but you mentioned need type-c to HDMI/DP to make it work?), appreciate if you could test and confirm. Connection trying to test if anyone have such set up: MBP =Thunderbolt=HP Thunderbolt G4 =1= Thunderbolt = Monitor 1 with type c =2= HDMI/DP = Monitor 2
So, you can use "Thunderbolt 4 port" for an external videocard using only "USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C" connected to "G4 doc-station" ? "Notebook with USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C" ---> "G4" ---> "Thunderbolt4 external video card" ?
Great stuff! Off topic but do you plan on reviewing the 8bitdo Ultimate Xbox controller? No one has posted if it works on Android or not, and I was looking forward to your review.
Hi! Great video. But one question: if i connect my omen hp laptop (with rtx 4060) to the usbc tunderbolt and the docking sation to 3 monitor, is the control direct from nvidia rtx 4060 direct?
Does anyone know will this support 4 monitors running from my HP Windows laptop or do I have to use my laptop as that 4th screen. I like to leave my laptop monitor closed and use the bigger screens. I have 3 connected now and I have 1 more port, just hoping I can run all 4 larger screens AND my laptop closed on the desk.
I have a HP Probook 650 G5 and I just want a docking station that can give me 2 displays... Internet/ mouse / power can be plugged directly into the laptop.... Do you have any rec for a docking station that is cheaper than this G4 that can give me 2 displays?
I have a HP Pavillian I am getting but I am going to be connecting it to two monitors ... will it work on my SAMSUNG S33A Series 24-Inch FHD 1080p Computer Monitor, HDMI, VA Panel, Wideview Screen, (LS24A336NHNXZA), both independently... not like you showed the mac. Or do I need to buy something also to put it in the area on the right? I am not techy...
I have the version before this and it is a very frustrating device. It crashes all the time. The whole top is a sensitive sleep button. I’ve stopped using it for anything other than charging.
Wait, docks are actually available? I have been trying to get HP docks for several months now but the prices are almost $500 and they usually won't give you a shipping date.
Nice video, thanks! And a question: for a Mac, isn't it possible to get a true (no mirroring) dual external display solution by connecting one display to one of the DisplayPort ports on the dock and the other to the HDMI port on the dock (and thus not use the Thunderbolt port to connect to a display)?
Does anybody know if it would support a dual QHD 144hz monitor setup? I need to run two monitor + some type-c peripheral + mouse and keyboard over USB A
Has anybody tried to install DisplayLink on macOS so that 2 displays connected thru Display Port going to work independently (not mirrored). I know that this combo works for G2 but not sure if G4 supports displaylink
HP G4 dock does not support DisplayLink. It uses MST for multiple monitors through one host connection. MacOS does not support MST. To connect two monitors to the Mac using the G4, connecting one monitor to Displayport (or Hdmi), and one monitor to Thunderbolt passthrough should work.
I would like to have a powered dock But the value proposition seems pretty dreadful when a $20 USBC hub replicates 90% of the functionality of them. As long as it has power delivery pass through anyways.
@@MandoMTL This is why I ordered open box G5 USB-C docking station from ebay for close to $140. I also got only in the beginning just usb-c hub for $30 because I only had then one 23" 1080p. But realized its worth to spend little more to get a desktop style dock to prevent janking all other cables around even though now I only have one 27" QHD monitor. I also got concerned with dongle getting hot and hearing coil whining when doing power passthrough. Dell TB docking stations come with VESA mount allowing you to attach it back to the monitor which I find pretty dope.
Here is my review. Its a piece of crap. Work sent me one. Nothing but problems. Kept turning my computer off, kept making reconfigure my monitors. I "dropped" it and asked for one from another company.
Wait I have had one of these for like 3 years? They are total crap lol. Have it for a Zbook. Total cluster of a product 50/50 if the zbook would pick it up at all. Sometimes would not even charge the laptop. The top button which puts the lappy to sleep is so sensitive just brush it and you are asleep. haha. Well perhaps its the zbook I dont know but not recommended.

So annoying
$$$. If you refuse to buy into their stupidly marked up ecosystem, you get nothing.
@@MandoMTL If you mean Apple, then you are wrong.

I feel oddly targeted with this upload. I was looking into this dock for an HP Omen laptop today. Thanks as always, Lon.

the built in thunderbolt 3 connector cable isnt permanently attached. there is a screw on the bottom to remove to replace uit

For workstation laptops you need the 280w G4. HP Zbook g10 fury need this.

I think the only thing I would change is to put the max speed on all those ports. Which is full or 10Gbps or 5Gbps is easy to forget.

Isn't listed from what I saw but it can do 5k 120hz apparently
I'm just seeing a black screen on my monitor while connecting the doc to M2 air. Any thoughts?

Will my MacBook Air m3 work with this dock?
Can it support a single 4k 165hz monitor?
So, you can use "Thunderbolt 4 port" for an external videocard using only "USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C" connected to "G4 doc-station" ?
"Notebook with USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C" ---> "G4" ---> "Thunderbolt4 external video card" ?

Hi, for some reason my speaker, which is connected to my dock, doesn't have the option to produce sound
Does its networking suffer from broadcast storms/network storms like so many other Ethernet/USB-C adapters?
I remember dell WD docks having a similar issue.

Your title is for g4 but you have introduced the product as g2
I have the newest one Just want to find out if the “on button lights up when it is on?
Does it have a cooling fan?
I think it might but if it does it's not audible. Very quiet in my testing.

You aren't getting anything above 5Gb/s data transfer and 4k/30 on one display for 20$, though. I get your meaning though. 200+ dollars is pushing it.
