I was there standing on the other side of the water and remember they had some difficulty getting it on the water. If you look closely at the far left side of the video around 1:30 you'll see one of "the vikings" getting tangled up in the ropes and are dragged along with the ship. This insident had the potential of having a bad ending right there in front of the King and Queen of Norway that we see arriving at the beginning of the video.
This viking ship is an exact copy of the original that was built around year 820 just at the beginning of the aera that we call the viking aera lasting for 200 years - from 800 to 1000.
The planks of the ship were split not sawed, using the same methods as the vikings would - making them 3 times stronger as ordinary oak planks.
It was built right there on the same spot as it was launched over a couple of years from 2010 - 2012 by amateurs led by professional boat builders.
During the winter it is being preserved under a canvas, sheltered from the ice and the snow right there were it was built.
But when the springtime comes around you can smell the tar as it is prepared for a new summer season on the water.
The original that is around 1200 years old, together with all its other artifacts are on display in a museum in Oslo, the capital of Norway.
It was remarkably well preserved after laying buried in a big heap just outside the town of Tønsberg (Toensberg) for so many years.
The original was excavated in 1904 and named OSEBERGSKIPET ("The Oseberg Ship") - for those who are interested and want to learn more about it from the net.
Over the years since after it was dug out, the original has become very brittle and must be treated very gently. During the years it lay buried the planks got a bit deformed, so the original is a bit more flat than the new copy.
The copy was named "SAGA OSEBERG" and is an exact copy that are meant to be used. If you're in Norway and you find yourself in the county of Vestfold - you'll find this remarkable ship lying as a tourist attraction in the small harbour of Tønsberg, the oldest city in the nordic region. If you can't find it, it's probably nearby - out on the small fjord surrounding the town taking tourists on a tour and let them try to row this ship.
The Oseberg Ship has sail and have been proven to be capable of sailing -
but it was probably a ship meant for more shallow waters. It's rich ornamentation is also an indication that it was more of a ceremonial ship
or meant to show that the owner was rich - like a "Rolls Royce" of the seas.
The ships that the Vikings used for sailing around the known world and also discovering America some 500 years before Columbus must have been more robust and practical.
It wasn't in the waters for more than a few years before it was used as a burial - a grave site. Inside of it the excavators found the skeletons of 2 women along with animals and various belongings.
It is obvious that these must have been wealthy people - perhaps royalty.
