    I remember that show. The four things I remember in detail are:
    The linebacker paralyzing another player and visiting the guy in the hospital because he was felt so guilty.
    the older RB getting sat down by a coach and being shown his game film and why him losing just a half-step in speed means he needs to be replaced. Effing brutal.
    I remember the young RB (Omar Gooding) smoking crack at half time.
    And I remember the closeted gay player being outed to the team and defiantly showing up to practice where his teammates brutalized him repeatedly with dirty hits before the coaches threaten to publicly out him if he doesn’t leave the team.
    Show was wild.

    Tbh a sports drama is the perfect way for writers to "kill off" loved and hated characters to show what's at stake, in a way where that character could still be brought back.
    Like players come and go, and come again and go again all the time. Beloved and likeable players get cut, traded, injured all the time. Toxic, disgusting, criminal players stay when they're good enough, sometimes they go. A new coach or GM could mean so many players are about to go out the door.
    A team could hire Josh McDaniels for some reason.
    Maybe that's the issue, though, casting.

    • @DaDualityofMan
      @DaDualityofMan 6 дней назад +9

      This is random but one of my favorite things about sports animes is u can watch your favorite characters battle it out without worrying about them dying, also the rivals becoming friends makes more sense as opposed to other animes where literal mass murderers become “good guys” 😂

    • @mars7304
      @mars7304 6 дней назад +4

      A sports drama would be legitimately so sick, but the issue is how do you get actors to recreate the scenes in which athletes make their bread?
      Plus I mean, guys like Vontaze Burfict would need to have their on-field behavior justified via some plot device whereas I'm not sure some of these guys like Burfict or Suh really had off the field motivations for playing the way they did.

    I remember when Junior Seau passed away. I'd been watching and playing football my whole life, but that was the first time I ever heard concussions taken so seriously. I had a couple in high schoo along with a lot of people I played with. Everyone from the coaches to the training staff were so blase about them that it seemed like a non-issue when I was growing up. I was like people do this for a living and they're fine. And then Junior Seau passed away.
    Protip: They don't teach you to tackle in football, you learn to hit. Play rugby and you will learn by necessity how to effectively wrap-up and take someone to the ground without risking your head and neck. You'll also be better at tackling than anyone else on your team fr.

    • @mars7304
      @mars7304 6 дней назад +14

      Very much this. From youth in football you're taught to seek impact, not contact. You're looking to take people off their feet before wrapping them up. I've heard coaches say "this is football, not wrestling!"
      Football is the one sport where violent, vicious hits aren't penalized so long as you can do it in a "clean way". As in no helmet-to-helmet, no targeting, no launching your above-shoulders area into someone else, and no clipping. Everything else? If we were cars on the highway it'd end as a tragedy but when they're kids with helmets its okay? I tell people all the time, if your kid wants to play football they should learn it through flag football first. Only go into a contact league if you love it enough to risk your body for it.

  • @de132
    @de132 6 дней назад +30

    Fun fact, Mutant League Football was made by EA Sports and used the Madden 93 engine.
    Another note:
    From the Associated Press: "Defensive tackle Brentson Buckner of the Carolina Panthers in 2004 called the show "hot garbage" when it premiered, but changed his opinion as the season went on. 'I think it was a shock treatment at first, to get everybody to watch it,' he said. 'But then it started getting into what it's really like and the reality of our lives.'"
    What also killed ESPN's initiative for sports dramas is that the second sports drama they made, Tilt (a poker drama), was terrible.
