I'm from Canada and after watching that game twice I can officially say that USA played a better game than Canada. Throughout the entire game the puck was mostly in the hands of the U.S players or in the Canadian zone. The reason they lost was because they made a couple of bad turnovers (especially the Toews goal) and Canada was beyond desperate to win, they literally could NOT lose. Also if USA's defense was as good as Canada's they could have won, I'm officially afraid of the 2014 US team...
Correct me if I'm wrong but they did expand the ice to IIHF regulation size for the tournament. They do it for the WJC, most notably at HSBC arena in Buffalo where the Sabres play. It doesn't take much for them to expand the playing area in those arenas.

A factor in the 50 year drought (not 60) was the IIHF. Canada's best players were in the NHL and were barred from participating, while the Soviet Union's professionals were permitted to play.
The Soviets who played together for 10+ seasons beat a team of NHL all-stars that were thrown together for one game.. Im not surprised they won.. That would be like the Canadian national team playing together in the NHL and touring around against other national teams in the offseason. If they did that they would win 95% of the olympic golds that have been awarded

If Canada had sent NHLers to every winter olympics there would be a hell of a lot more gold in the Hockey Canada trophy case thats for sure.
I wasn't sure how old Luongo was. Did Thomas even see ice time in the Olympics? As far as I can remember Miller played the whole time. The US will probably counter with Quick and Howard.

You might be right. But U.S. hockey has come a long way and we are right there with you guys, from juniors on up. Good luck in 2014. You won't win gold there. Because you will have to skate on the larger rink, which Canadians cannot do. The Russians will skate circles around you there.
Yeah that's why the USA beat Canada at the 2010 Olympics and just beat them at the 2012 World Championships. They also just won their 4th straight U-18 tournament.

To bad IIHF determines ice and rink sizes and qualifications not the country in which the games are held. So the same ice that Canada and USA out played every Euro team and Team Russia in the last Olympics will be the ice they skate again. Russia will under perform and be lucky to show off a bronze to their countryman and woman. Team USA may make a splash but look out for a Canada vs Sweden Gold Medal. My prediction USA over Russia for Bronze and Sweden upsetting Canada for Gold

Nope they kept the ice surface the same to save money(would have cost $10 million CAD) and it allowed more people to attend the games.
