- Shanghai based MMA coach and Kunlun Fight Combat League ringside commentator Ramsey Dewey breaks down eleven basic speed bag patterns and shows in detail with sparring footage how to use one of them in live boxing. Stay tuned for more videos in this series where I show you more in depth how the speedbag can level up your boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA striking game.
Thanks for a great video. You emptied my cup for sure. I might add IF you practice 10-15 minutes a day it helps to "Practice with a Purpose". Have a lesson plan for that time, as well as (hopefully) some knowledgeable instruction, or oversight occasionally by a knowledgeable teacher, lest you practice "bad form, bad movement," over and over day after day. Just my two cents. It is very hard to know if you form and movement is correct on your own. Loved your advice to keep the elbows up. True, especially when passing fist through front to back to front. Much easier with a parallel arm and belly of bag set correctly. I think of a cup of coffee resting mid point between my shoulder and arm...don't spill the coffee. Great video and insights! #KeepPunching!
Oh wow, thank you so much for your feedback! I’ve been following your channel for a long time! I’m a big fan of your work sir!
@@RamseyDewey ..I am honored to meet you! Thank you for teaching. Hopefully we can get a speed bag in every house! I liked your insight on "Block-Punch". I had never seen it that way before, but it makes perfect sense in the melee of close in fighting.
Praise from The Godfather! Well done!
I know Im asking randomly but does someone know a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot my login password. I love any assistance you can give me
@Lucian Lewis Instablaster ;)
I know you keep saying that nobody watches your technique videos but, dangit, I do and I appreviate it!
I really appreviate it too!
Maybe a sign of the times. We have more philosophers than fighters.
@@itchykami philosophers were often also fighters in ancient times and modern. One of the ancient Greek philosophers was a war hero from the peloponnesian war. Tolkien and CS Lewis fought in ww1.
@@sasizzarrustuta8919 Hhaha ya took the words right from my mouth fam, i really "appreviate" that too bruh lol 😁😂🤣
This is the first time(I m 52 yrs old) I see proper summary for speedball exercices!! Some say this and some said that, that s all, I got so far and never been sure what to do. Thank you for this valuable information!!!😊
Thank you for watching!
5:50 Ramsey does Wing Chun
So it's the kata of boxing? Wow thanks for sharing this! Could you show us the rest of the applications ?
Yep. I will make a series of these.
@@RamseyDewey Thanks a lot! Very few martial arts RUclipsrs are so generous with their knowledge!
Ramsey, I know I am late to the party but I just discovered this video s little while ago and it was a game changer for me. Your advice on limiting the time on the speed bag and “sleeping on it”, as it were, was spot on and made a huge difference in my progress. I am now a fan of your channel because of this video and other great content.
I have my own way of hitting the speed bag: i basically "link" my hands and feet together, meaning if I hit it with my left hand, i tap on my left foot, right hand, right foot, same mechanics when throwing a punch. Also i put the hand thats not hitting the bag near my cheek, similar to how I would in a real fight.
In the last 10 seconds of the timer, i jog in place while hitting the bag to increase intensity. I also incorporate head movement here and there.
Or sometimes, I just shadowbox with the speedbag as my target. Its a great tool, it just takes creativity to use
You can easily apply this to learning instruments! I practice certain bass licks for 5 minutes a day and I'm getting better at it over night thinking about what I do wrong and how I can fix it. My fingers then usually move and shadow what I do on the fretboard.
Thanks for the video! I do BJJ so I don't use the speed bag. But the theory behind it is still very interesting!
Well done Ramsey.
Finally found some rhythm today with the reverse punch. Been trying for a while and it felt good to finally flow with it a bit. Thank you Ramsey 🙏🏼 good vibes only
Thanks for sharing the techniques and wisdom, Coach.
Your method reminds me of how I trained my power punch as a teenager. I trained on the heavy bag gor 15 minutes every day just working on one or two good punches at a time rather than trying to pummel it as a cardio workout. Trying to make every punch good quality. It really worked, I was out punching my older brother, also a kickboxer despite him having 40lbs on me
This was great, I wanted to find out more techniques for using the speed bag as I want to get more use out of it. Plus I want to use it in relation to the type of style of training I look to achieve.
#7 looks magical af
That's fantastic shoulder rotor cuff exercise.
Even if you don't do martial arts, the speed bag can improve general sports skills.
Perfect!!! just bought a Speedbag last week :D
Really needed this vid, thanks coach!
ok, as always, super cool video, but this one was more than that... all your explanations make a lot of sense, and I don't get why it is not more common in gyms to work on the speed bag, and why no one explains to you how important it can be. definitely my next acquisition ^^
Such a cool video and such wise words, I love it😁 I'm definitely going to use your tips🙏🏽
Thank you!
Omg, i thought that your practice of your basic moves reminds me on my dance training because this is the talent I have the most discipline. And then you mentioned the connection to dancing xD
Everything is connected.
I been using the speedbags for years now, recently my younger sister had asked me how to use it and I trouble explaining it to her but this vedio brought back some good tips once given to me when I was learning. She was a dancers and violin player so I am sure these tips will help! Thank You
Great skills, Ramsey!! I think there is one other that you can do, probably easily, with what you already do. That's a forward elbow and back elbow with one side followed by the same with the other arm. Same rhythm as the punch followed by the back knuckle then the other side, etc.
There are lots of others I can do. These are the ones I’ll be focusing on in this series about practical applications of speed bag movements.
nice share!
I get the feeling I'm gonna be watching this more than once I don't box but these hand fighting techniques look very similar to movements I use when sparring with boffer swords framing and deflecting are both used a lot with weapons as well, Its funny how much translates between different types of fighting
Are there any techniques you would recommend specifically for Muay Thai?
I just got a speed bag set up,what part of body really exercise from using speed bag ?
I'm actually starting to notice a difference in my cross after working the falling step on the speed bag; I just started doing it in class last night without even thinking about it.
Looks fun!
Again, great video. Could you comment on bag height. What if the bag is a 30cm lower or higher? A 1.5m tall person and a 2m tall person training on the same bag height might help one and create bad form on the other. Conversely is it better to train on speed bags with different heights or consistently on a fixed height bag? I found wear on my shoulders at too low or high speed bags. Love to hear your thought. Thanks.
how many times does the bag hit when linking?
Lovin that slick black beard
Ramsey, do you recommend a general training glove (12-16oz) or a bag specific glove (8oz) for the heavy bag ?
Didn't know there were so many speed bag techniques.
Ram man is what I'm gonna call you lol but thank you!!!
I'm getting into MMA and I've got a black belt in karate but when ever it comes time to use my hands I'm clueless. Do you have any tips? ; Because when I box with my friends they all throw wild hay makers and pointless windmills that I don't know how to counter.
Doot Doot Focus entirely on your defence at first to condition the weak aspect of your fight game. This means covering up 80% of the time incorporated with slips, parrys and all the essential defensive tools. Once you’ve wired your mind to respond better defensively the counters will automatically surface to which you can truly incorporate your karate skills. Remember have a solid but relaxed guard, keep your chin tucked and look through your eyebrows and personally I like to focus on my opponent’s upper chest and let my peripheral vision telegraph attacks. Try not to flinch and hesitate or give into feints easily but don’t feel disheartened if you’re still struggling the whole aim is to improve. Hope this helps mate :)
Are your shoulders healed now?
Most "RUclips fight experts" who discredit the usefulness of the speedbag are people who tried the speedbag and couldn't t get good at it, so they decided to say it's not worth the time. Easier to change a goal than a behavior. The heavy bag is more immediately satisfying to the beginner while the speed bag takes a lot of dedication to get proficient at. Also, to novices, someone can look like a killer on the heavy bag while not being worth a crap. This isn't possible on the speed bag. If you're not good on a speedbag, it's obvious to anyone of any skill level.
I think RUclips should provide a way for viewers to give more than just one thumb up!
They used to have a star system so you would rank videos from one to five stars.
Oddly therapeutic..
If you allow me a suggestion, Ramsey... Ask a DRUMMER friend to elaborate some rhythmic patterns that, with a bit of creativity, will become drills, drills and drills... :)
While it’s fun to watch speedbag drumming (look up Speedbag1 if you’re into that, he’s really good) my objective here is to teach fighting applications.
Of course! I'm not into spectacularisation (does this word exist in English?) of training, it's just about ear-to-hand easy and functional ways to teach and share drills... You should try ;)
Sifu Dewey would you be so kind to tell me what is the difference between Testosterone Boosters, and Steroids. I will send you the same message to you on Facebook and please give me a shout out...?
No idea. I don’t use either.
RUclips search "speedbag"... wait wait *DELETE*
"Speedbag Ramsey Dewey"
10 hours (600 minutes) over the course of 3 months(about 90 days) is 6.6 minutes a day
And 0.6 minutes is 36 seconds, so 6 minutes and 36 seconds a day
His main point here is that you shouldn't do something for hours because if you force shit upon yourself, tiring your body, you won't learn the techniques effectively enough. You will only waste time and in the worst case, hurt yourself. Resulting in you losing even more time... lol
@@cuboloudspeakers You're good at math! I don't know how to convert decimals into fractions and vice-versa. You should do a video and I'll subscribe!
And you probably wouldn't do it every day, consistently.
Maybe 2 out of 3.
Which is exactly 10 mins / session. 😁
Was just making homemade one of these today wtf cool
Wow, can you make a tutorial?😂

Next, Ramsey does music.
And yes, I do watch your technique video.
I've been working on a speed bag since 1978 and I still picked up something watching this video. I NEVER stop trying to learn no matter how long I have been at something....Thanks!
“You improve from sleep to sleep.”
That hit me in my soul!
The information about learning from sleep to sleep is amazing, thank you for this. After so many years training so many things, this is the first time I have heard this. It seems like a really important piece of the puzzle, I wish someone had told me this sooner!
Love the speed bag, I played drums as a kid and it really helped me pick up the rhythms. I like to do paradiddles not sure if I’m learning any type of combative movement but there fun.
This is dope i never thought of trapping before
Thanks fantastic video one ov best iv seen explain it brilliantly
This is the most difficult thing I have ever tried to do in the martial arts and boxing!!
Most comprehensive explanation I've ever seen. Excellent job 👌
He really didn't have to have to add music over this the satisfying notice of the speedball is enough, and also this is like my 5th time watching this it's the skill level is insane

Hey Ramsey I would just like to ask for your personal opinion on something that happened recently
Well I had an argument with my dad and I pushed him which I shouldn’t have but he then decided to kick my 3 month old puppy I continued to attack him
Then my brother came in put me in a headlock he’s much stronger than me but I also know I need to control my anger because my child hood wasn’t the best and my dad would always abuse me so I grew up violent also I have adhd. I was thinking about doing a class in the Gracie jiu jitsu academy in Burwood Australia do u think bjj would be a good discipline also a practical martial art to defend myself while on the ground?
I know attacking my dad was wrong but it was because of the moral side of things you know just because I pushed him he decided to kick a defenceless puppy
BJJ is known to help people fight on the ground, however, you should first avoid fighting in the first place
Little late to the game but I just made myself a speed bag mount and bought a bag, been using it for a few days now and this is by far the best tutorial I've seen on YT for it. Thanks for sharing more of the wealth of knowledge you have. Ive learned alot from you and I'm still learning from you. Love this channel.
Thank you for this video! I’ve said this to you before but I have to say it again, your grace and timing with this piece of equipment is nothing short of beautiful. Your movements really do put the ‘Art’ in Martial Arts. Keep up the great work!
Got a questian: I Think it was in the book Muay thai the Art of the eight limbs ( but Not for Sure. I have to many books and eBooks on Muay thai) that in Thailand the speedbag is rarely find in the gyms and Camps! Is that true?
Greetings
Martin
Sorry the book was Muay thai the most distinguished Art of fighting
Maaannn what a cool Video with many insights for me of my mistakes I Made After reading Benny Urquidez book king of the ring where he also demonstrated some techniques. I Think I have to Go to the cellar and get my speedbag Back on the wall. Thanks for your inspiration, Mr Dewey!
I'm pretty sure this is your coolest look. Pretty cool man. you probably don't care about being cool even. But what's cooler than being cool? Alright alright alright alright alright
Thanks for the video I also subscribed it’s very helpful as I’ve been a kickboxer for many years and never learned how to use the speed bag but I’m trying now lol
The best and most complete video for the speedbag on the internet! Half of these i didn't even know you could do. As I am training boxing and everything that involves improving the boxing technique, the number 9 is definitely most useful. If your feet don't move, the fastest hands won't help you.
INSTANTLY saved 2 playlist! will definitely be reviewing MULTIPLE times later, especially 4 the finer details o' that "gallop" punch. perhaps a SLO-MO rate is in order here. dig it.
Hey Ramsey, I'm a boxer and I've been watching you for a while, do you think that a speed bag like this would be useful to train in pure boxing with no mma elbows or back/side fist punches/blocks? If so how useful do you think it is?
I know you did focuse on this in part in this video but if you could make a short video just talking about weather it's practical or not specifically in boxing then I'd be grateful, thanks.
Yep. I’m making a whole series of videos about the speed bag and double end bag. For boxing, besides the round elbow, there’s a practical use for all of these movements. And even if you never use those specific techniques, the speedbag is one of the most underrated developers of punching power when used correctly. If you haven’t already check out this old video of Marcos Maidana’s coach complaining about how Maidana keeps popping all the speedbag sin his gym because he hits so dang hard:

Is it a good idea to practice falling steps with opposite foot? I thpight it was ideal for power.
I was doing it like one-two-THREE-one-two-THREE
I totally agree with you Ramsey Dewey
I bought one snd installed it as a part of my metal fence post in my backyard I absolutely love it
Although s friend pointed out the neighbors might not appreciate my beating on them things at 800 Saturday morning
So I took his advice into consideration snd I recently stapled on a carpet to the backboard
I don't know if I like it
🗣Your like thee modern speedbag Bruce Lee keep up the motivation 💪🏿 💯👆🏿👌🏿🙏🏿
Thank you for this video... I'm just beginning to get into the speed bag and was going to ask you about it after seeing you use it in so many of your videos..
You have said in another video that it also helps with power... In what way?
You have pretty much answered most of my question with this video, so thanks again.
Just one last question... You explained the specific reasons behind the block punch drill... are there different particular reasons behind the other drills or are the reasons for them pretty much the same as the block punch one ?
Thanks.
🙂👍
Each of those patterns represents a different technique. The speed bag develops power by stimulating the fast twitch muscles from the elbow down to the hand. It’s the last extremity of the punch we’re training in massive numbers when we use the speedbag. Even if you never use any of the practical fighting applications of the patterns, if power development is all you get out of speed bag training then it’s well worth it.
After watching Marcos Maidana work out, I made it a point to develop my power to the point that I could break a speed bag with each training session. After breaking 12 of them, it started getting expensive, so I stated focusing more on technique.
But yeah, correct speedbag training will add that extra POP to your punches you didn’t even know you were missing.
@@RamseyDewey thank you so much... I never saw the speed bag as anything more than a sort of timing exercise until I started watching your videos.
Because of you, I have been trying to develop it. (I have the first 3 from this video down and have been trying to get the hang of the reverse punch but I fail at that one LoL)
I view the speed bag in a whole new light, and now I understand it a lot better.
Thank you 🙂👍
Thanks

Thank you, learned a lot.

Do you also have a video for the double-ended bag? Installed one of those instead of the speed bag bc the neighbors complained abt the noise
I have a few double end bag videos. I should probably make a few breaking down the technique a little more though.
Ramsey Dewey yeah I found them.
Thank you sir
Excellent.
excellent
Dear Ramsay, I finally have the chance to go to a boxing gym in my local area, I signed up for the next five weeks (before I have to move again) what do you recommend I do? (stamford boxing club CT) ALSO, as you said in the video, the speed bag was in a dark dusty corner covered in cob webs... :) (I have a background in taekwondo, if that makes any difference)
Cool! I recommend you get out there and train!
I can do the frame/ block and the falling step my speed bags kinda a cruddy homemade one and they're honestly the only ones that my feedback lets me do .
Plan on getting a new speed bag for Christmas though going to learn some new stuff for it
What’s the point of the reverse hits and tricks? Where’s the benefit? Honestly question
They are hand fighting patterns, not tricks.
