The new one looks like something straight from Portal games I think they did a good job simplifying the design. But we all prefer the looks of the old moto
its literally a white folding table lol
Speak for yourself?
yes. we all prefer original design.
the new one looks like a blank canvas for customization, adds some sick ass stickers and paint to it, would be fun.
I think they should have gave it more proper ratio. Like the OG motocompo. Maybe make it more squared shape and all but i feel like the new one feels... thin... and... HONESTLY I WOULD NOT SIT ON IT LOL... It looks like It could fall any time. With the motocompo's ratio you could also push more batteries to the bottom because its wider and with that raise the height a bit, because I don't know about you but that electric dinner tray doesnt seem like it would survive even the slightest bump. If I were Honda I would properly used up the fame of the Motocompo. Like... "Electrocompo" or something... implying that its not a gas eating tiny bike but an electric one. Maybe they could have gave it more retro style if it was in the motocompos' style with like... tetris-esc rear lamps with square leds like pixels and all... like a futuristic and symplistic yet very retro vibe to make it pretty outstanding, adorable, and overall very good looking...
The new compacto looks great to get to work if you park far away. Light enough that you can take it into the office and store it at your desk or somewhere inside. Cant do that with the compo, as cool as it is
yeah but I'm gonna be the center of attention when some homeless guy sees me with this on the train, this is the type of thing you could get robbed for lol it's strange looking and draws attention and says Honda
@@bluetoast8584 I think this kind of stuff is useless for the homeless, it doesn't have paddles and needs to be charged for at least 3 hours to get the 12-mile range(with the standard house plug), not to mention the charger is exclusive to Honda. If they steal or rob it, I guess the only thing they can do is to sell it.
@@kencai6803 they can’t use half the stuff they steal. They sell it or trade it in for drugs.
You can do that with a 400dollar Xiaomi scooter and save 600
@@bluetoast8584 You know the Train is used by everyone, right? You're so car brained to think that people who use the train are the great unwashed and want to take your stuff
To be clear, this 15mph electric vehicle is being launched during an era when folding e-bikes and e-scooters are well established...
Before anyone feels the need to create a video essay on why it didn't take off, 20 years from now.
That was my first thought. I have had electric bikes before, fold-able ones even. I feel this compromises on so many things to fit the form factor it ends up becoming way too niche compared to the other small EV options.
My Ninebot ES4 is faster, smaller, and has more range. The only real disadvantage is the lack of a seat
Yeah, I ride a one wheel gt that gets more than that and is easier to carry.
@@MegaFPVFlyer Segway-Ninebot makes a seat for the ES4.
@@fixman88 I didn't know that! If only the speed controller didn't blow up, I might have gotten one.
The new one would have been impressive in 2013 but there are so many better EV options out there now.
For $1000 USD, I’d actually challenge that statement. I doubt you could find something better for $1000 new. You could for sure find a comparable e-bike, but don’t count out the style
@@tylersanders2388 there are cool looking, custom order E-bikes that get 100 mile range that run in the same price range.
With optional baskets and racks too.
Plus you don't look like you're riding on a suitcase.
The new one basically looks like a stand-up scooter that has had a frame and seat added.
Thats all it is
Agreed! A stand up E-scooter dressed into a box.
Yeah when you see the frame inside the box you realize that's basically what it is, but that's perfect for me as a 44 y/o dude. I am too old to ride around on a scooter...I look like I'm trying to be a kid. This little box looks just as silly, but at least it won't have that scooter stigma to the average passerby.
@@rabbithomesteading3797 But looks so cool!
@connyconiglione I walk all the time, but I use scooters when I drop one of my cars off at a shop or whatever. It's super handy and I can't wait to get my little Honda.
Definitely two different vehicles. I like the specs on the gas, seems more like the last mile vehicle everyone needs. But the electric is better for office storage or small commutes. Wish it did at least 20mph though.
I think that would actually class it as a motorized vehicle, so the lower speed keeps you from having to get a license plate and insurance. At least here in the EU. It's geared towards a global market much more than the compacto.
@@TheLobstersoup True. Here in the States it's a bit lawless for EV's so we get a little greedy with the top speed.
The little electric white one looks like something an Apple coder would ride around the Cupertino campus on while sipping a double almond milk latte nibbling on avocado toast with a garlic aioli.
Both are great, problem is they're made entirely redundant by the awesome scooter market the blows them away, e.g. range, speed, portability, weight, ease of folding, etc. A fun niche product and prices are pretty good.
This is meant for trendy artist types, the ones who like to overpay for iPhones and iPads.
@@noseboop4354I'm pretty sure the selling point is actually that they come with a car as a secondary excursion vehicle. Sure you can fit another scooter in the back of your car as well, but it will be a bulkier and more awkward fit because it wasn't designed to be stuffed in the back of a car.
Scooters suck the only one thats legit is the trail 125 and its too slow but at least you have utility
@@Mika-ph6kuother scooters only have the disadvantage of not folding flat, otherwise they're way easier to put in. Folding them and putting them in the trunk takes like 5sec.
@@TheAnnoyingBoss I'm pretty sure they're talking about electric scooters.
the motocompacto is actually really practical for my work situation. right now I work from home but at some point next year I'll transition to a hybrid job that needs me in the office a few times per week. The issue with that is that I currently live in the city and do not own a car, which is fine for me as I can get food and stuff within walking distance and can rely on public transit for everything else. Now I can take a train to the town my work is in, however that town is very car dependent and walking from the station to work takes like 25 mins or something ridiculous like that. There is also a bus that goes around but I have no idea how reliable it is; the bus that goes from my apartment to the train station can sometimes be a little unreliable. However, if I had a scooter that folded up like a briefcase, I could simply ride that to the train station, fold it up and push it under the train seat or something, and then when I get there ride it from the station to work. and since it's a tiny electric scooter I don't need a motorcycle license or insurance or even to buy gas. sounds good to me!
the cool thing about the white slab is that you can decorate it with your own stickers
I just ordered the compacto… the local Acura dealer doubled the price. I ended up using the local Honda dealer.
Just ordered my compacto too!! Used my Honda dealership too
You can order it online also
@thomasrossi31. What was the final price?
It was $999… but, it was canceled by the dealership… claiming they had computer issues.
They better build an electric one with the look of the old one
It looks like the Compacto was made with the EU market in mind (in particular the 15mph limit). It would not be too hard to soup them up for 20-30mph speeds with a new controller.
15mph limit is in the us too
@@yamkaw346 Not for E-bikes, and even in my state scooters are legal to 20mph
@@ebikeengineer I’m not sure the bike laws but this would be classified as an e scooter, many states have 15mph limit on them including my home state of Arkansas.
@@yamkaw346 Some states would see it as an e-bike, but I'd be surprised if anyone in your state would give it a second thought. Even in my very blue state 20mph scooters are legal - but guys run 40-50mph scooters and nobody cares.
@@ebikeengineer Oh yeah I’m positive no one would care around here, but I’m sure these laws are why Honda limited it.
And to think....I was just wishing my CR-V hybrid had an e-Motocompo for tooling around without taking up squat for space in the back, charging off the car.
$1k is a steal. Especially for an e-Ride from one of the biggest names in the biz, not some fly by night Shenzhen ebike clone company.
I’m super disappointed of the complete lack of style and power that the new one brings. It’s actually pretty upsetting :(
I am very sure they didn't want a high number of accidents from adrenaline junkies and stupid people. I wouldn't trust people to ride responsibly with these things so they capped the max speed lol.
You’re saying this like it’s the end of the world 😂😂😂 I bet you wouldn’t even buy the old Compo
The new one is okay. Id rather just get a stand up scooter at that point.
The old one was cool because they fit an i.c.e. engine and required components in such a small package.
internal combustion engine engine
Stand up scooter is a face plant machine.
As much as I promote gas and as much as that 83 MC would be far more comfortable to ride, the logic says an EV version for the application of quick, light, temporary last mile solution should be the answer. However, this new EV thing needs some more girth to make it stable I think. Those "wheels" I can see getting stuck in every crack and expansion joint. Makes for a very wobbly scary ride to go even 15MPH.
We putting a Tic Tac box paintjob on the new one 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯
Compacto is a great little vehicle. Very tempted to get one myself. Honda at it's finest: utilitarian, well priced and simple.
But similar spec small e scooters that don't say HONDA on the side are cheaper... it's priced a good 300 to 400 bucks more than it has any right to be.
The new one for sure makes more sense, but I think there's just too much competition in other "trunkable" EVs.
Personally I would have preferred more retro styling and a nod to the motocompo
this new motocompo seems the best bet for ppl who use public transport and then again need a cab to reach their destination
I drunk ordered it last night. Will be perfect I live in a small town about 3 blocks from bars and restaurants and about a 1/4 from the grocery store. Sometimes even firing up the motorcycle and opening the garage is a hassle for a short trip to the store.
Looks good, but I do love the older design a lot more, I do wish they kept the more bike like design
Both very unique but I'd rather ride the Compo.
Thanks Kase, great review and comparison. Dont think either are going to handle my 6ft 300+lb frame for very long. Thinking I could put two together. Tracktion, snow tires or chains
If it could get to 20-25 mph it would be a killer product. You might as well get a secondhand razer scooter if u wanna go 10-15mph
yeah, my $1,400 fat tire e-bike can hit 25mph.. has a 50+mi range, has cargo racks, can carry a passenger, can handle off-road riding etc..
The honda would be a little more practical if it had at-least a 25mi range.. Most people that own one say they only get about 10mi of range, which is basically useless for most people.. I guess if you lived in a city and worked less than 10miles away, or is a kid taking it to school.. and I guess folding it up and putting it in a real vehicle is neat, but other than that it just seems like another novelty toy.
Ordered, I’m getting it wrapped silver!
i kinda wanna make a modern motocompo from some kind of electric scooter , but in my head that ABSOLUTELY implies that you would NOT downsize the wheels or ignore any suspension like Honda did here...
that's not improvement, that's only adding a skin to a basic e-scooter
I love the new one because if you take it to the store you can fold it up and put it in the grocery cart. That way you don't have to worry about it getting stolen. Wish the range was longer or have the option to carry a second battery and change it quickly. Thank you for the video
Can't wait for decal kits/wraps for the new one. Retro motocompo wrap? Portal game wrap? A suitcase wrap? I hope so. I hope they come down in price too.. Hard to justify that money on a machine like that
agree on the decals' idea
disagree on the "hard to justify"
- it seems like a pretty affordable option within the PEV realm & that's before considering the ease of storage, maneuverability & accessibility
@@Andythecreature good point.
It's hard to justify for me. I live in a small town in northern Canada.
In a city it would be so good. Pull it right into the office and fold it up next to your desk 👌🏼
Really seems to be more of a toy than a practical transportation solution. I can see it being nice in a warehouse, office, or airport type setting with smooth level floors.
Forget the private market, you can set those little rectangles up as an alternative to lime/bird/etc. with a few modifications it can be a very neat and tidy way of doing e-scooter rental. Where sidewalk space is at a premium.
Like you stated in your closing, it is cool that Honda is still exploring this realm. I think that the Brompton bicycle has a lot in common with what Honda has produced. A price point below $1000 for an electric bicycle/scooter seems like a good deal. It looks “respectable” for carry on luggage for a train or subway. I have never had anyone try to keep me from bringing a Brompton on a train but there are many sly comments because it is obviously a bicycle. I suspect the 49ish pound specification is to skirt the 50 pound limit on many modes of mass transit. I also agree that the target audience for an electric scooter is different from the audience for a gas powered bike. No one is going to bring a gas powered bike on a train/airplane/subway and I don’t think it has a place inside the passenger compartment of a car either. The real value would be that several could fit on an RV or in a pickup bed to go on trips with local transportation at a campground. Obviously a larger wheel would help here. I doubt Honda wants the company image of making a new folding gas powered scooter for the audience that could find value in it.
Good demo of the Motocompacto. It still manages to have a lot of the fiddly fussiness of the Motocompo when folding and unfolding it. The battery version is definitely more practical than the 2 stroke but the limited range could be problematic for someone who needs the last five mile commuting solution with no way to charge it at their destination and an errand or two on the way home. Someone needs to make something similar with a 20-30 mile range, and even simpler folding and unfolding - pull up on a handle to release a locking latch and extend the wheels and telescope the handlebars up and rotate 90 degrees.
i agree i wish stowing away was easier
but totally unrealistic to do errands with a toy..gotta step up to an ebike?
Car & Driver did a writeup in their current issue on both bikes. The old one was vintage and great but the new one is quirky and similarly great! Price is also very good. I plan to buy one soon for my son and I to play around with.
i like the idea of keeping on in my car trunk.
The new is an hommage to the Motocompo. And a last-mile-vehicle for the car-trunk. Just like the Motocompo was one, originally...
This is a neat way to get around vacation destinations, or if you live in small communities with lots of foot traffic
I like the idea of both but that older model is so much more bike for the money and massively cooler. That said I could see the lightness of the electric being more practical for the last mile into work. The only thing it needs is a 20 mph top speed and slightly bigger wheels to improve the twitchy handling and pot holes
They should have painted it red and done all the retro stickers. The Navi is kind of the same experience
one is a bike, one is a scooter, for me, thats all i need to hear
I think the use case for these are indoors - large factories, warehouses, tech campuses, airports etc..
That would be all they are good for.
Can't wait for the first K-swap.
OnG
We had a race with these at the Yokohama bike show...was fun...not a crowd draw
Love the video
I would really like to see an electric version with the original size, speed, and form factor. Seems like it could be legitimately useful.
I want that new one. When packed up, it looks like a piece of AV equipment and that's kinda' cool.
Seems like... motocompacto is a mobility aid to get you across a busy costco parking lot... motocompo lets you get through the city from cheap parking to where you'd actually like to go?
More like a 'last mile' vehicle. Something you could keep in your car to drive to the train/subway, fold down to take on the train (try that with a gas powered vehicle), then get you from the station to your place of business.
Old one rules it’s a full mini moto for your compact car I love it.. new one is an e scooter with more body but love that they paid tribute to the old school style
I would love an original Motocompo, but it's $4-6k and I'd just go buy another Grom/Monkey for that (or less for a used one). This new one is relatively affordable. I realize it's probably double what it should cost, but I am hoping it at least is a bit higher quality having the Honda name. It looks like a fun little toy, if nothing else.
I ordered mine. No idea when I'll get it. I heard they might ship first of December, but I honestly don't know.
Plus its a battery so these originals ended up gaining value. When This things battery kaputs its value drops like a hot rock
How much did you grab yours for ? What is the gross weight ?
@@razablanco3766 $995 plus my local taxes of about $82. Max rider weight is 265 lbs and I believe the scooter wrighs 41 lbs.
I see those big white sides as a canvas. I want to get one and just COVER it in stickers lol
Cool watch, are you wearing a Girard Perregaux SeaHawk? Nice.
If you go to Tokyo and drive around you start to see why the motocampo made sense. Especially back in the era it comes from when the Tokyo metro was less extensive than it is now. The city is enormous and parking can be a big issue, so if you say lived out in the country and needed a way to get from a commuter parking lot to work, then this little bike would be perfect. My bet is that improved metro service made it obsolete.
Now the motocompacto might actually be a lot better for modern cities. I live in DC and there are a lot of places like Georgetown where having the ability to carry a scooter onto the train and then have the ability to get that last 2-3 miles could be really helpful. A suitcase sized scooter could perfectly fit the bill.
Wish Honda made the white panels removable so we could color match them to some OEM colors. Would love one in Kiwi Metallic.
Great Honda Motocompo in great anime - You're under arrest
With all that open white space. You can do vinyl graphics on the sides. Maybe some flames to make it look like it's going faster
What we really want is a new 2 stroke 50'cc motocompacto. As a Honda GROM Owner, small bikes are so much more fun than people would assume.
GP Laureato EVO3? Very nice. Something tells me you didn't actually worry too much about the price of that Motocompo 😉
They could have made the motocompacto to go 25mph very easyli, but they didn't.
yeah have fun going 25+mph with no suspension on a scooter
I like the new in for the sole idea that its new. Its something that isnr used.
I have a certain mistrust/gamble with old stuff so when available and when viable i try to buy stuff new
(Also it looks better than the old)
I think it's better to electrify the old one.
I like the design of the new one but I ride an electric unicycle (a Nikola Plus) and I'm fairly sure it would blow both of those things out the water. My wheel weighs somewhere between these two but it has a range of 50 miles, can do 40mph (if you're really brave) and takes about 2 seconds to turn it into a piece of luggage that I can take round the supermarket. I think my wheel looks quite a bit cooler too. Sadly the laws in London mean they're illegal but I live in hope we'll be able to buy 3rd party insurance for all PEV's at some point soon.
The charger port cover falls off to never be seen again 😂
The Compacto is the closest we're gonna get to The Jetsons car for a while. Easily folds into a suitcase size and you can put one for every employee on a simple bookshelf.
In a city with no parking lots or cars these could thrive.
I have a super edge case last-mile that the new one is perfect for. E-scooters just don't fold down small enough for my needs. I just balk at paying $1000 for that miniaturization. And no, I'm not buying a mono-wheel. Would love to see the new one on a hill climb test.
I'm in love of the Compo original
Being plain and white, it wouldn't be hard for someone to make a vinyl print to make it look a little more like the original. I think I would rather have the new one, simply because it's a little better at being what it's supposed to be.
You can get a "big bore kit" for the Motocompo believe it or not. upto 65cc! You can get it up to about 30-35MPH. And that is terrifying i'm told lol.
we live in the era where you can unfold a suitcase and ride it down the street. amazing
Kinda wish the new one had more to it like indicators or a mirror, horn etc. and also more interesting design, like add some sticker or different colours, the white looks clean but not as interesting
Aint getting that seated scooter with cover. Old school one all the way !!
It's the same speed and range as my gotrax apex pro scooter which is worth 300
As I would use it the new one is a better fit. But, I love small, quirky, and impractical vehicles so I’d get the old motocompo
Im a sucker for a good unique peculiar automobile
Drag race the two.
1/4 mile
rolling race from 7 mph
braking test
The time for the motocompo has passed. There is a new king, the MotoBeardo
The new one looks like a plastic folding trestle table you'd pick up from a hard ware store! XD
Part of me really wishes they would just release an electric Motocompo. I still think the Motocompacto is super cute and nifty, but I dunno, the idea of it not being a street legal scooter and only going 15mph makes it a little less appealing.
A Honda motocompacto and a Honda E is a great pair just like the motocompo and city.
Kase your awesome I’m proud of you
So much empty space in the motocompacto. Fill it with more battery. Add maybe 10 pounds and triple the range.
Im a total e head but id still go for the 83 version
Id take the motocompo cause of the extras , headlight , brakes , suspension and more power
I like the old one. P.S anime Your under arrest series uses one in a Honda Today
The old one has character while the new one would look at home sitting next to sterile hospital equipment.
To me it's superior to scooters because it packs waaaay better. You can throw this in your trunk, on a roof rack, etc. Stand-on scooters are awkward shapes when you fold them.
Really unfortunate that it just seems to be a generic low-end e-scooter with a giant plastic box and Honda logo slapped on. Just a little larger and they could have put something substantial (and practical!) underneath that box.
It’s insane that you still use those ancient measurements
The old one had so much character :(
i have an ebike thats about as fast and big as the old motocompo. its called the engwe t14. its kinda started to fall apart on me so i havent used it in a while
Is that a GP Laureato Oracle Racing chronograph that he has on?
Wish it came in red like the old model.
What's the point of this other then sticking out? Light weight scooters for around 1k weigh 30lbs, have a speed over 20mph, and a range of 28 miles and take up less space.
Maybe they were thinking that people would put their own stickers on the white side.
Amazing how much cooler the original one is
i like the concept design WAAAAAY better.
why cant companies make them look cool so they sell better?
and somehow both would fit in in a cyberpunk setting
I’ve been looking for an electric scooter that I can carry with me so that when I get to where I’m going I have something to get around say a shopping mall or a neighborhood…..
The motor compactor looks like a possibility although I’ve seen scooters that fold smaller and are lighter and fold into a smaller package…..
But the Compacto looks good….
Better off getting the Jetson bolt pro for 300 usd. Andre even did a review on one.
I could see this being useful if you take a lot of trains and you commute in a totally flat city. Otherwise this is really niche.
I would go for the new one for practical reasons. I would drive to the store and place the compacto in the bottom of the shopping cart while shopping. It looks like it would fit.
have fun carrying around 40 pounds, itll get old fast
