- Oh No!!!! A leak under the sink!!!! Have you ever opened the sink cupboard door to find water running down from your taps. All your detergents etc sitting in water!! How to easily fix this job. This is for those of you who have separate taps in the basin or sink. Al shows you how to fix it.

Thanks a million for this and all your videos. I really enjoy DIY especially plumbing stuff (weird hobby for a 33 year old female ha! If I was able to I'd train to be a plumber im stuck working for the NHS though)
I've learnt so much from your RUclips channel. I started off changing tap washers when the tap was dripping... Removed rads safely to decorate and replaced the old fixings.
This year I've changed my bath, basin and kitchen taps to mixers (and invested in some copper pipe cutters because I wanted to swap to Flexi hoses with the bath)
I've replaced my toilet inlet and flush...helped my neighbours out with little jobs, and the biggest job was probably changing my pedestal and basin (I learnt a lot through trial and error there, I didn't realise how tricky the whole thing would be like the waste, height of pedestal etc😅..)
Now I'm wrapping up my latest project - fixing a friend's garden tap which had three holes in the copper pipe.. I've installed a new tap with double check valve inside and a drain off valve.. cut out the damaged copper pipe (5m up a ladder it's a flat) and deburred and measured and joined the new pipe..
I'd never have had the confidence to do these jobs without you. It started as a money saving exercise as a single working Mum but it's turned into my hobby! there's nothing as satisfying as fixing those jobs that a lot of people wouldn't feel confident to. One of my favourite tips you've passed on was to use that copper pipe seal stuff that smells strangely nice... In a tin!
Anyway a heartfelt thank you for taking the time to share your expertise 😊 for a novice DIYer it is priceless having someone teaching me over RUclips with the experience you've got👍
My next plan is to learn to weld pipes if that's the right word...Thanks again for your knowledge!😁

Hi Al. Thanks so much for this video and really clear explanation. Bought a basin spanner for less than £5, and a new washer, and this turned out to be a really easy job - saved having to find a plumber, and I felt so pleased that I could just do this myself after watching your advice. 😀

Thanks for this. Dad helped me change kitchen taps as no garden hose connector fit the old ones. The cold tap changed fine, no leaks. The hot tap kept leaking under the sink. We did use PTFE tape, but it still kept leaking. Dad didn't realise the swivel nut had a washer. So off to B&Q to get some washers and to be safe some plumber's mait (which he prefers to PTFE)
You also saved me a fortune in plumber call out on a Sunday.

Been changing taps today. One of those 5 minute jobs that ended up taking me 3 hours lol. Then I had the leak from where you have just pointed out. So tomorrow I shall get the washer and also one of those basin spanners. Never struggled as much trying to loosen /tighten anything in such an awkward place and I'm no lightweight and not that nimble 😂.

I have so many pipes (and darkness) behind my kitchen sink that it is impossible to change the hot tap, but that long spanner seems a good idea. I will give that a go. Thanks!

Thank you. I just replaced my old basin taps (faucets) in the bathroom that were connected to flexi-pipes, and no matter what I did I couldn't resolve the steady weep. I even tried over-tightening and adding PFTE tape - a big mistake). I eventually sorted this out by simply replacing the rubber washer in the flex-pipe (the end that connects to the tap /faucet) and then just hand tightening as much as I could and then gave it a quarter turn with the wrench. Suffice to say all is good.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I don't have the right tool but at least I know what to look for. I have a leak under kitchen sink and our association can only send a plumber on Monday and it is Thursday. We really need our sink as a family of 4 with no dishwasher. Is B&Q better or Homebase? Our space under sink is so terribly tight and awkward though.

When you went to the parts store what did you ask for? I need a washer but did you take the old piece with you and just ask them for it
Basin wrench is what you're looking for.

Another great video Al, I have a small basin in my cloakroom and the leak is coming from exactly where you said. I've got a basin wrench similar to yours and i can get it up to the nut but there is no space for me to turn the wrench. The wrench fits the sink in my bathroom but not the smaller sink in the cloakroom. Any ideas?
You may have to get a claws foot spanner.

Hello, just bought a new set of taps and installed them myself in the bathroom sink. I've got a slow leak, I'm assuming it's this exact problem as I didn't replace the washer. Is there a technical name for this type of washer so I can make my search for it easier. Thanks!

I only have one tap and one handle for water cold warm or hot it all comes out from one tap ? I’ve never seen this before.
It is old tech ha ha.
We have a Pop-up basin waste that is operated using a lever and rod mechanism. Water leaks from the hot water tap under the basin when 1) I clean this basin, or 2) when the rod mechanism is used to engage the plug. After a while it rectifies itself and stops leaking. Very confused, any ideas whats going on?
The sealing washer is broken between the tap and the basin.
@@dereton33 thank you, just to make you aware ... when I'm not cleaning so therefore no water around the tap, but i pull the rod to close the plug, the leak starts again, and then stops itself until left for a while. Do you still think its the sealing washer?

Any idea what the source of a leak (a very small one) might be when it comes from above the black plastic nut that holds a bath tap on? I have a washer there, between the nut and the bath. I assumed the leak was going to be the washer below as you explained but it is coming from higher up, right where the washer meets the bath... There is no water sitting around the taps above. I'm going to take it all apart to find the cause of the problem.
Can be a pinhole flaw in the brass.
ok thanks, I'll give it close look. It is quite an old tap that has been moved and reinstalled so maybe that has stressed it.

Hold the nut underneath with the basin spanner and turn the tap in the basin, to break the seal.

mine leaks only when the water is on, and it pours. Faucet is lose. I'm guessing it's the basin nut
It may also be the rubber washer that seals the flexi to the tap.

The nut that goes into the bottle of the tap is leaking, ive tried PTFE tape, i did not know there is a washer there, what size washer do i need? preferably something that screwfix or bnq sell please
15 mm fibre washer for straight swivel connectors.

Just wondering if you could help me. I live in a Terrance house and I can hear a leak somewhere I can hear it in kitchen behind boiler. There's no visible water in my house but when I turn bathroom tap on its leaking through next doors kitchen wall. I was on a shared pipe but when this started over 1 year ago I was advised to put my own stop tap in which I have done and even when I switch it of I can still hear the water. I'm at my Witt's end united utilities have been out numerous times and not really helped I just keep getting passed from pillow to post they say it's plumbers responsibility plumber says it united utilities if I had any idear I rip my own wall down and fix it myself.
Hi Carol, the leak must be before the stopcock you fitted so your new stopcock will not turn it off. As the leak occurs when you open the bath tap the leak could be behind the bath, so well worth taking off the panel and having a look.

He's got a point. In this day and age plumbers are only using copper and metal fittings because it enables them to make more money from the customer.
