One episode rule doesn't work with any anime in general. Especially considering the longer running manga adaptations where the writing improves with time. And there are complete opposites where the first episode is a banger but the series become meh over time. The only true way to judge is to completely watch the anime to form a coherent opinion.

Gundam walked so every other anime after it could run, and so that attack on titan could sprint to the finish line since lets face it attack on titan is essentially a mecha anime about war with a peace message much like gundam.

There were 72 Gundams because they were made based on the 72 demons of Ars Goetia.
And Gjallarhorn is a name from Norse Mythology. That's why Mobile Suits from Gjallarhorn are called Valkyries.
Also, to make it clear, the other Gundam series does not take place in the same war mentioned in Iron Blooded Orphans. They take place is separate timelines.
Also, you might want to know that there's an Iron Blooded Orphans movie upcoming.

If you think that the OG Gundam was a glorified kids show, that’s cause it basically was one. You see, the series had a rough development, Yoshiyuki Tomino, wanted to create a Mecha anime that was different than the others he had created, he wanted to move into a more realism focused genre geared towards adults, however the higher-ups at Sunrise would not allow that and made him shift it towards a kids tv show but he didn’t do that exactly and therefore it did not stick well initially and got cancelled just after 3 episodes, but after adults took notice of it with reruns of the show, it allowed it to get back in development and finish albeit with a much lower budget and shortened from 50 to 43 episodes. But it managed to get a lot of people into the genre and became one of the biggest franchises

Great video, just one small correction tho. IBO isn't related to the other series, it is a standalone story set on it's own universe, which is very common for gundam, different series and other stories are each set in their own "timeline" as we fans call it, each has their name, IBO (plus urdr hunt and some manga) is set in the 'post disaster' time line, most gundam series are set in the Universal Century timeline (UC for short) which is basically the main one, so it has the most content, but there are plenty of other standalone ones like the new Ad Stella, Anno Domini, Correct century, etc. and each has their own stories that anyone can jump in as they see fit without the need for knowing or watching anything else. Just gotta point that out 'cause saying they're all connected like you did kinda makes the franchise look a lot more daunting then it really is.

Gunfights can be just as skilful as fistfights and just as visually entertaining. Especially when the guns are used by giant robots. See Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt.
Although Zeta Gundam does have a lot fistfights for a show where mechs are the primary weapon of war.

Gjalarhorn is name of a horn from Norse mythology. The 72 Gundams referring to 72 demons from ars of goetia. Gundams in ibo series are named after those demons such as Gundam barbatos and kimaris. Why named after demons? Because what they're fighting was giant machines called mobile armor named after angel. Those machines supposed to end the long lasting war, but because they driven by a.i they conclude they need to extinguish all the humans to make the world a better place. That's why the Gjalarhorn built the gundams to fight them. That's the story of the calamity war. The war between human using Gundams to fight mobile armors.

but it did not age well. instead, i would advise on you starting with something like Thunderbolt, war in the pocket, or the more popular AU stuff like SEED, 00, Orphans or even Witch. depending on what you like in anime. if you enjoy more brutal and bloody stuff, go orphans, if you want something lighter, go 00, if you want personal drama, go SEED, and if you just want something that starts more lighthearted, go Witch.
there are also the gunpla based series, you can start with either builders and builders try(builders is the better of the 2, but try is not bad).

12:52 I think this is a common reason for most people not enjoying Mecha anime really. Though why I think it works when people give it the chance is that not only the plot drives the action forward, but also when you begin to see the mechs as an extension of the pilots themselves. The Gundams in IBO display this perfectly, given how most of Tekkadan quite literally hook their bodies up to the mechs, essentially making every action they take like that of their own human body.
You begin to see it more as the norm of how they actually go “mano-e-mano” so to speak, rather than a crutch to actually fight.

The original series got condensed into a film trilogy, and surprisingly they did a phenomenal job of it. So much of everything they made later calls back to it that you really should have at least a basic familiarity with the events/tropes that started it all. Or go in the total opposite direction with the recent Witch from Mercury series, it was like a sister series to IBO, standalone alternate setting outside of the UC timeline etc to draw you in a little more before going back.

  • @Asmodean1111

As a long time Gundam fan, getting anyone into the series with older stuff is like pulling teeth. Having to explain there is different timelines of mostly one off stories when not dealing with the UC (Universal Century) timeline. I personally feel the shorter shows in the UC timeline, those focused on the One Year war is best, as those have the most basic units of the series in those being the Zaku II and GM and their numerus different form and sidegrades before seeing their full upgrades into Zaku III, GM II, Jeda, Gelgoog and countless other suits that serve as Grunt or Grunt Commander suits.
The 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket are my go too for showing people the idea of the shows with overall shorter runs to the main shows. It also shows both sides of the One Year War to a point, while still showing neither side is whole evil or good. Gundam as a whole is a anti war story, reworked and molded to fit different settings and ideas, like with the most recent Witch from Mercury show having a big posthumanism view with how the Gundams of that show seem to line up with IBO Gundam in the extent that they harm the human should they not be strong enough to handle the feedback.
Also OG Gundam was kid shows as it was more meant to sell the toys, and only after it blew up after being canceled at first did the show push a more adult view for it. Zeta Gundam, first mainline follow up to the OG Gundam, sure as hell was not meant to be a kids show and it's ending for the time was messed up given it was from the mid 80s.
IBO does has a 2nd season, but you may also like the Gundam Thunderbolt movies, December Sky and Bandit Flower, as Thunderbolt is an Alt timeline of the One Year War focused on the last month of the war in Space, and BF being a year or few years after the end of the OYW. Most Grim Dark of the Gundam shows to date imho.

Technically, all the Gundams in IBO belong to Gjallarhorn so the ones that Tekkadan and other forces own are stolen property.
However, Gjallarhorn doesn't really care anyway because they don't consider the Gundams as anything of high importance plus the dangerous surgery besides being a symbolic gesture. This is why Iok for example despite owning a Gundam from his family doesn't use one along with some other Gjallarhorn pilots.

kinda, then again gjallarhorn was corrupt at the time, which is why only specific family clans have gundams maintained and kept operable and at the same specs as they were back in the calamity war era, while the rest remain spread around the universe either buried next to the mobile armors they fought or being smuggled around as a stand in ahab reactor to power facilities since most of them were decommissioned which is why in the first episode they had to fit in the cockpit of a mobile worker to the Barbatos because for a long time it was only used as a generator other than that they also retrofit the frames to their liking which is why Gusion in its first appearance looks like a beefed up rhodi frame meaning they were hiding the fact that it was a gundam. Also they only banned the alaya vijnana system within their military kinda like how they banned the use of dainsleifs since the alaya vijnana system was deemed unnecessary with there no longer a threat of mobile armors as well as the advancements with the graze being very easy to pilot without the system, soyou still can have alaya vijnana they simply won't allow you in gjallarhorn and you'll be seen in the same light as a filthy alien which is why Gaelio Badouin vomits when he found out about Mika and his implants, and its not enforced either so you really can just get an implant if you wanna risk your body, a lot of grey areas in general but the use of dainsleifs is straight up a declaration of all out nuclear war but with dainsleifs.

Other than the bit of criticism, I hope you'll check out other Mecha anime. The genre is the widest and oldest in all anime , and you can always find something for you. As for Gundam recommendations, Witch from Mercury is the most recent and modern of the shows. The 08th MS Team has fantastic 90s OVA era animation.
Finally, and absolutely NO CAP, Original Gundam Build Fighters from 2013, a show about people fighting using their customized gunpla in a tournament arc against each other, directed and scored by the guys who did Haikyuu and MHA s2, which you can just asume is PURE HYPE. This show can also ramp you off to other Gundam series since it's a love letter to all the fans of gundam and the hobby while also making it beginner friendly if you know nothing about it.

Perused some of the comments, and very surprised seemingly no one told you to give Origin a try to get into the main timeline. Not gonna talk about the different timelines as others have gone over that, but I will say UC has the most in depth and rewarding content. It is worth getting into, but should be seen chronologically starting with the 1979 series (or compilation movies), then going through Zeta, ZZ, CCA, Unicorn, Hathaway and in between there are optional side stories that should NOT be slept on like 08th MS Team, War in the Pocket, Stardust Memory and so on. It is a big universe, but very simple to follow. Don’t believe any claiming the watch order is complicated

my advice is, never start with the original series, unless you are ready to handle the really old stuff. it did not age well. it does, however, have the best story in the entire franchise.
its far better to start with the more popular AU series, like SEED, Orphans or 00. if you want to start in the UC, go with thunderbolt, or war in the pocket.

Once you watch the first anime you'll notice there's a lot of tropes that exist in every gundam anime, also is very influential in anime as a whole

A few things I noticed as I watched the video so first things first.
We have a saying in the gunpla (gundam plastic) hobby, gunpla is freedom. You can like wat you like and want, build however you wish and its perfectly fine enjoying the hobby without knowing a damn thing about the shows the gunplas are from, thats the beauty of it.
From the way you described not enjoying gun fights and just want character to punch, hack and slash out of each other, I wouldv thought of you as a shounen enjoyer so imagine my surprise when you said you dont like Dragon Ball.
As the video went on, I had a sneaking suspicion that you only watched the first half and I was right cuz your review of the show wouldv been massively different from the praises you sang of it if had you finished the rest of it. No spoilers but most gundam fans enjoyed the firsy half but when the second half, it split the fans of this AU (alternate universe) becuz of how the second part played out. All I have to say is, watch the rest of it, come back and tell us how you feel about the show then cuz I guarantee, it will have you conflicted about the show as a whole.
When you are finally done with the ending, search up and enjoy a bit of the Orga memes. Note that you should only do this AFTER you finish it.

The point of every Gundam show, including those that look like kids shows (except for Gundam Build Fighters) is that 'war is hell'. Watch almost any Gundam show long enough and it will deliver that message, sometimes in very disturbing ways.
But if you can't wait for a slow start and need the horrors of war right out the gate, I would recommend the movie versions of Gundam Thunderbolt and Gundam Hathaway, both set in the Universal Century Timeline. Personally, Hathway was confusing and weird, but the action was good. Thunderbolt is almost all action, but damn it also gets depressing. I have heard that it might be the second saddest Gundam story, with first place going to Gundam 0083 War in the Pocket and its child tramatizing line about hamburger.
Other shows with good action include 8th MS Team, which is basically the Vietnam war but with mechs. Outside the Universal Century you also have Gundam Wing and Gundam 00.

A lot of people build gunpla without knowing anything about it's origin so there's no shame about it. You can just get the model you like the particular design off. Some people start researching and watching/reading where it came from if they got interested.
Just know that there are 2 universes, the Universal Century timeline and the Alternative timelines. The UC timeline is the main and longest timeline with continuous story going on since 1979. While the series in the Alternative universe (Wing, Turn A, X, Seed, Age, 00, IBO, Build, etc) are all unrelated separate shows with it's own story and atmosphere which you can watch in any order without knowing anything else about gundam.
Most gundam series (especially those in Alternative timeline) are written and directed by different people so it's basically like bunch of separate unrelated mecha series who share "gundam" in their title and some narrative similarities here and there. It's fine if you like one and don't like the other. Just how it is with final fantasy games. The UC gundam is mostly adapted from Tomino's (the originall creator) light novels. The Alternative universe series are original anime for the most part which sometimes later get a manga adaptation. For example Wing later got a manga adaptation that fixes some story plot points and condenses it into 14 volumes instead of 49 episodes, making it the definitive version between the two.
With gunpla it's best to research the models before buying them. The newer released models are way better than what we had 10 years ago for example since the technology improves so the model engineering improves a lot too. Before buying a model it's best to look up if there's a better version of what you liked (for example MGEX Unicorn over MG Unicorn, or HG Sinanju over RG Sinanju, or EG Nu over HG Nu, etc).
Dalong net is a well known website int he community which has a catalog on most models with many photos of contents of the box and build reviews (it's in korean but there's english menu, or use the browser's translation function). There are tons of model reviews on youtube like ZakuAurelius or Mecha Gaikotsu which go over strong and weak points of each model. Also there's gunpla subreddit too

If you check the Original has Linked Series after its first Airing. the one I liked from the original that is Later on is Gundam Unicorn but you need like to finish basic Original, Second Series [Zeta], Movie [CCA], then you get Gundam Unicorn
Also the recent Gundam which is Witch From Mercury is also good if you like to try
However honestly if you like IBO it's also cool because there's a lot who liked it as well and recently there is 1 more IBO Related Anime soon

  • @sanictheedgehog

The old Gundam series are the best. In particular the original 1979 one (I prefer the actual series to the movies), it's sequel Zeta Gundam, and it's sequel Double Zeta, then Unicorn which happens after all of that then Turn A Gundam which is incredibly underrated. 1 or 3 episode rules I think are terrible ideas and prevent people from getting into great series. I have a friend that kept trying to drop one piece because he kept trying to follow those rule. I fed him the, "It gets really good in around 50 episodes, trust me bro" and he's been thanking me ever since because it's one of his new favorite series. Doesn't mean people NEED to keep watching things if they aren't enjoying it, guess it just that trying to understand and sticking it out can lead to it clicking for them eventually.

  • @Jc88500
    @Jc88500 7 месяцев назад

IBO is it’s own timeline. It’s self contained and does not connect to any other Gundam series. The only bit of the Calamity war we ever see is a 30 second clip of from a mobile game of Gundam Marchosias kicking the ass of two gigantic mobile armors. Shame cause I WANT MOAR.
Also, it’s a 50 episode series. You’ve only seen the first season. Definitely watch the rest, and have a box of tissues ready when you do.
Also 72 Gundams was a thematic thing. Each Gundam is named after a demon in the lesser key of Solomon, which there are 72 of. In lore however, it’s because the Gundams dual Ahab reactors were difficult to sync as opposed to the single reactors of other frame designs, so the Gundam frame was made a limited production design.
Check out Gundam 00 and Witch From Mercury too. And definitely give the original series another go if you’re willing to go past your 1 episode rule. That classic show gets dark af real quick. And if you do give Witch From Mercury a shot, watch the Prologue episode. It’s the true episode 1 of the series and you’ll have plenty of questions if you skip it.
