For instance "minorities" have been voting Democrat since 1960's and they are still poor and worse off than ever. So what's the problem with changing your perspective instead of being handed a built-in excuse for failure when they label us "minorities".

    • @kobizzle33
      @kobizzle33 9 лет назад

      Thanks for the commentary, Sandy. I think we agree on a high level.
      I do agree that voting strictly from a partisan perspective is a dangerous approach to politics, but I'm not sure it's right to claim voting democratic is ipso facto incorrect just because substantive change hasn't come about.
      We can't make the mistake of forgetting how shackled the President truly is when it comes to making change. Bipartisanship in Congress can very plausibly inhibit candidates who have great ideas.
      I won't vote for a candidate from a unitary perspective. I'm interested to see Carson's performance in tonight's debate. I want to endorse a candidate who has a similar world view as me, not a shared perspective on one issue (important as it may be).

    my aunt told me when she lived in Harlem in the early 60s all the lazy " blame whitey" people who sat on the brownstones doing nothing daily ridiculed her for being a " working girl" while they later on raised generations on welfare . she busted her ass cleaning houses and babysitting and landed a postal job that enabled her to buy a nice home in long island. she migrated from the Jim crow south and even though she lived through racism we will never encounter and the pre civil rights era she had the common sense to do for self while those who laughed at her for being a working girl always had their hands out on welfare never doing much but blaming the white man. so until we stop looking for that fictitious 40 acres and a mule and start doing for self we will always remain powerless under a country our ancestors built for free.

      they have got rid of the chains and use the media and lack of education to control us.
      they tell us what they want us to know and try to keep us fighting with each other. whether it be on foreign shores or our own.
      this is to keep us from noticing the real enemy.
      the one that is hidden in the shadows.
      the poor and downtrodden of the world should come together not fight each other. there are more of us than them.

      Mark Bradleyvery well said indeed! I recognize we are but minor players in a much bigger game that transcends race and is about finance but self defeating habits like waiting for things to just magically happen while pointing the finger is regressive...I'm not wealthy but what I have I worked for..what I don't have I'm working hard to get
      and I think every leader worldwide whether civil rights or faith based preached self determination.
      racism and slavery predates religion and will not disappear anytime soon ..but just as the asians and other foreign grpups felt the sting of discrimination they knew education..self reliance and unity were the keys out of poverty.if mainstream America wouldn't do business with them then they created their own.
      so even though we all can't be rich if we worked collectively we could all live well.

    @route99 9 лет назад +62

    So if you take food stamps, public housing or any public assistance at a difficult point in your life you're a lazy person who won't do for yourself? Is that what counts as Republican outreach these days?
    When did working hard and using public assistance become mutually exclusive concepts? The American people of all racial backgrounds are working exceptionally hard with less and less to show for it. I think the inner cities are wondering when the trickle-down is coming, Mr. Carson. While you gut the safety net and you figure out those "mechanism" that are going to lift the inner city out of generational poverty, we'll still be waiting, but hungry and homeless to boot!
    "But, but.. some people abuse and defraud the system" True, but that is a small portion of the users of these programs. And I think you'll find abuse and fraud much more costly and rampant at the other end if the spectrum.
    Corporate welfare, no-bid contracts, highly profitable companies receiving tax refunds from the government; these all dwarf abuse of the welfare system. Not a word from Mr. Carson on that.
    When you're done telling the black community their mothers are deficient, maybe you'll run a credible campaign.

    • @jingelbells
      @jingelbells 9 лет назад +8

      +Angie Montreal the rhetoric that it's "blacks" that are using the system is so naive. Yes, the system is being used incorrectly, but it's being used incorrectly by many races. The system needs reform, not abolishment, but the issue is even deeper than that.
      When you have people who work 40 hours a week and still can't make a living wage they shouldn't be on welfare, they should be paid more! When you let companies pay worker a non-livable wage you are giving the employer welfare.
      As for people without jobs, we are never going to have the capacity to support a 0% employment rate so there will always be jobless people on the system, even if you force them to look for a job.
      Solutions?
      1) Get rid of horrible trade agreements that ship many of our manufacturing jobs over seas. We may not be able to come close to 0% unemployment, but it'd greatly help the cause if we could bring back the over 5 million manufacturing jobs that were lost since 2000.
      2) Raise the minimum wage. The minimum wage should *at least* keep up with inflation (about $10.90). You could even make an argument that we should factor in productivity... By the way, before the argument is made, this won't result in people being fired. Companies don't currently hire people that they don't need just because the minimum wage is low. Also, "small businesses" that would be "hurt" by this actually tend to pay their employees more...
      3) Stimulate new jobs. There are two *huge* areas of the economy that are not tapped. The first is the rebuilding of infrastructure (ignored because it's boring and people hate construction). This is a somewhat temporary stimulation because you are creating jobs that will last forever, but this is great stimulus for families with low education "stuck" in poverty. The second is green energy (obviously opposed by oil and gas)! Wind and solar... give tax breaks to people who buy solar panels... this creates long term, skilled positions for sales, maintenance and installation.
      4) Raise our education levels so everyone really has a chance at the "American Dream" (a middle class lifestyle). I personally like Bernie Sanders's idea, provide public college education paid for by taxing Wall Street speculation.
      One final thought. I like the idea of making people prove that they are looking for a job to stay on welfare after a certain amount of time, but recent reforms in Arizona show that helping people to get back up and on the feet works better. They have a program that provides (pretty nice) housing for homeless people. They ended up paying a significant amount less to support this program, opposed to paying for ER visits and wasted public resources (like police calls). We've also seen in many states that drug testing welfare recipients is like throwing money away, you spend millions and save a few thousand...

      +Hyperionsf That's not a stereotype though, conservatism at it's core is limited government and having the free market provide goods and services that government provides inefficiently. Would a conservative president and congress not gut spending and cut programs/services in the area of welfare and publican assistance and so on? They absolutely would, so own up to it, just how progressives own up to wanting a more socialized economy.

      +route99 - Hello route99,
      ""But, but.. some people abuse and defraud the system" True, but that is a small portion of the users of these programs"
      Actually I think it is a growing portion of who is using the system. The people who have been on the system for so long and just keep bringing more people into the system, seem to be the only people who know how to benefit from the system.
      There are a great number of people not turning to the system and trying to make it on their own,
      and then there are the people who have grown up on the system and think it is a normal way of life to take from others.
      We are a growing nation of people with dependent mindsets, turning to the government to provide...
      the same problem that causes the islamic countries to be such a mire...
      people lacking ambition and creativity, because they have been taught to be like children expecting to be taken care of by their governments. This is a slave society... and it is what we are heading towards if we do not make a change while we still can.

    • @jingelbells
      @jingelbells 9 лет назад

      OnGodspath However, there's a problem when someone can work 40 hours a week and still not make a living wage. When 56% of the money "given" out goes to people that are working, we have a problem. Sure, you can fix the problem with people living on welfare as a lifestyle, but you are targeting less than 44% of participants when you could be targeting 56% by raising wages. You also have to take into account that the 44% also includes people looking for jobs, elderly people (over 65), children, and people with disabilities that aren't able to work.
      Now don't get me wrong. I think we need some reform to help with those who choose to live on welfare, but I think we need to target the bigger problem first. This kind of thing comes back to the issue of what we think is happening and what is really happening. A lot of people, myself included, thought that people on welfare and using drugs was a big problem within the system. It turns out that every state that has issued drug tests to welfare recipients has had a colossal failure with the policy. We need the number to guide us, not speculation or anecdotal stories.

    He makes good points however, Black Lives Matter with focus on police brutality is not oversimplifying or worse distracting the problem, rather it is narrowing down a piece of the problem in order to solve the issues one step at a time. In fact, expanding to all problems with the black community as a focus will make it difficult to get anything done and to get people on board with the same perceptions because of how vast and broad the issues are. In addition, there is a clear perception given by Mr. Carson, which is why he stated that other ethnocultural Black people will call him names (uncle tom/sellout), which is that the American system should not be challenged, rather Blacks and Whites should do more to help Black people better fit or assimilate. This disregards any open or hidden black ethnic and cultural ideologies, beliefs, values, and perceptions that are not welcomed, supported, or included within the institutions, training and workforces, and any other societal area of America. Who's to say that the directly White ethnocultural values and activities such as getting a traditional education through schools and libraries, getting a high paying career to live that "American Dream" is even what should be valued. Who's to say that Black or any other ethnicity, let alone identity other than the White heterosexual Christian male in-group, believes or should believe this aspiration is what makes a quality, successful life. How does people in power play a role of maintaining these beliefs and values and having others suffer to follow them. Now that is the "real" problem, since he wants to expand on Black issues. How can Black people form a more united identity in terms of perceptions and values to carry out in decision making and daily activities that we will be able to include into American society. Well until then...Black Lives Matter

    • @muckypup595
      @muckypup595 9 лет назад +2

      +Robert Cummings BLM is great because it brings folks together but they shouldn't try to create an us vs them scenario. I think BLM is better off distancing themselves from Democrats and holding that leverage over them until they get something that is tangible. Hurt them at the polls until they realize Black communities are not absent ones.
      At least Trump is talking about bring back jobs to the inner cities which benefits those that welcome work and comparatively high wages. He's the only pro-black guy I've seen other than Carson.
      Carson hasn't spoke much to other means to overcome hardships as blacks. He was fortunate to have a caring mother but education isn't the key to get whatever you want. It is more like a way to open doors, however, you got to walk through them and many don't. Which speaks to your point of a traditional western values lifestyle that many Blacks don't want, I know I don't. I kind of like not living as some victorian clam that doesn't do anything but look down on people.
      Carson gets it right on the mentality to survive is predominant, I remember thinking when I turn 18 I was free. I could leave and got my ass a football scholarship and left. Came back and now run a major non-profit helping lower and middle income folks retrain, find jobs, get businesses and learn life skills. Very rewarding, but there isn't enough of it and working with politicians for many years, you learn they are only in it for a short time.
      Politicians are issue grabbers, they are petitioning monies for homeless today and then loaning monies to the poor the next. Never ending cycle of chasing money and not caring how it affects a community. So hopefully BLM gets uses their leverage, talk to people that haven't sold out Blacks already and take meaningful steps on uniting the black community and in turn the great American community. America is in this together.

    • @robertcummings3935
      @robertcummings3935 9 лет назад +1

      Mucky Pup Wow! Thanks for the essay.In response, I agree, BLM should not be an us vs them. It is time for us to differentiate individual and organizational racism with perceptions and cultural prejudice. I honestly do not believe either party is the best option for BLM. I need to get up to speed on Trump's position with Black matters and other policies before I make any statements, but I'm sure I would not go as far as say that he is pro-Black...nowhere close. I am pursing traditional education while attending an HBCU where there are still major traces of western ideals. On that note, most businesses have Western perception foundations, making bringing jobs to the inner city not as problem solving without effective inclusion tactics. I have some problems with politics as a whole, supporting your statement on temporary support. Political issues represent but are highly insensitive to the realities of the actual issue, and don't get me started on the use, or rather, misuse of statistics! BLM needs to be very strategic in compiling literal proposals to give the government and other institutions for enactment in contract with powerful signatures to hold accountable. Even though I am not to keen with the distracting watering-down "All Lives Matter," it be wise to work with other social organizations to implement plans more effective that can gain more support. All BLM currently has is anger and hashtags, there needs to be actual initiatives to protest if denied.

      Hey, I appreciate you putting so much time into sharing your thoughts. Honestly, though, this is really hard to read. After twice reading through the academic sentences and vague hypotheticals, I still wasn't sure what was going on in either of your posts. I'd suggest more straightforward words or more straightforward thoughts - either one. I know everyone is negative on RUclips, but I'm just trying to be helpful with some feedback.
      My questions are: Blacks as a group have different values than other races? Western ideals are challenged by black individuals in a manner unique to blacks?

      +Jamie Den Adel Thanks! I do have that vagueness problem, but it is also difficult because it's such a broad topic. To answer your questions: races do not have values directly. When races are placed in societal and intercultural contexts, values play a part. So no, black people do not have different values from other races. However, Black people as an ethnicity and Black ethno-cultures do have values different from other ethnicities and ethno-cultures. Western ideals predominately stem from (heterosexual Christian men) White ethnocultural values, perceptions, and beliefs with minimal inclusion for other ethnic perceptions. When individuals have ethnic derived cultures/cultural aspects that are more closely similar to societal standard cultures (etiquette, management) the individuals have an advantage in society. Others have to shape or even eliminate their cultures to be "professional" or "compliant" causing a disadvantage in most all areas of society. Do to specific occurrences throughout history, Black American ethnic groups have a distinct reaction to Western ideals that other ethnicities will not (as they have different historical occurrences in relation to Western ideals). I hope that answers your questions.
