    I’ve been playing electric guitar for over 10 years now, but recently I decided to get a bass guitar and play for the first time!
    RUclips was recommending me videos from Tosin Abasi, and his finger picking technique inspired me.
    I know it might sound strange to be inspired to play bass because of a guitar player, but the “double thump” technique (at least from what I know) was pioneered by Victor Wooten.
    Regardless, I’m really excited to learn how to play the bass guitar!
    If there’s any useful advice or any other instruments you’d like to see me play, leave a comment letting me know ^-^

    As a bass player for some 20+ years a few tips.
    Bass isn’t guitar (duh), with bass it’s more about restraint then show it off chops. There is a time and place for that but overall the notes that aren’t played are just as good as the notes that are. Which leads me to the next top.. Rhythm. With bass you are holding down the rhythm. While the guitar is off doing they’re solos, the drums doing their fills, bass is holding down the Fort maintaining the song so in the eventuality of all the other elements messing up, the bass is still going strong.
    After first try not shredding the bass, do single notes or arpeggiating chords and practice holding the fretted string down to get the whole note and not a partial one. Tonality is equally important on bass (if not more) since the bass in music controls the key of the song. If your note is off, the song is off.
    Lastly, picking isn’t heresy. Learn all styles and adapt them to the style that your playing. Picking, fingering, slapping, etc are all worthy of playing the bass.
    Cheers bud.

      I've been playing bass for 4 years and the last 1 and a half along with 4 buddies of mine in our little band. We got a fill-in for one of our guitarists got sick and went to the hospital for a month and this guy criticized me, the first day of him being with us, for being a bad guitar player when I was working on my Electric Eye riff. I told him this: "I'm not even a guitar player, I'm a bass player." His eyes lit up as if he just got another guy to to say dumb things to. When we first practiced for our first gig on a pub he wasn't too prepared and he said that he was quitting and luckily we got our old guitarist back. He showed up for our gig though and there were about a total of 40 people there. They cheered us on at least but this guy told us that we sucked because he was jealous. He also called me a "noob" for playing 4 strings on my ESP LTD 414FM. We played 21 songs cuz we were there for 2 hours and the pub gave us free drinks though. those 21 songs consisted of some Sabaton, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Gamma Ray, Status Quo, FFDP, Turisas, Manowar, Megadeth, Disturbed and Pantera.

    Well, I'm two years late but here's my advice:
    Five-string basses aren't upgrades, just tools for playing optional lower notes.
    Use your first, second, and fourth fingers for fretting and first + second for plucking.
    Avoid learning completely off tabs, you'll need to learn bass clef for the future.
    Make sure you have your bass set up correctly to avoid fret buzz (send it to a shop).
    Avoid fretless basses if you wish to learn slapping.
    Finally, have fun! It's worthless learning all of this if you don't enjoy it!

    Muting is your best friend when playing bass. It's way more important than on guitar because the strings pick up sympathetic vibrations easily. The way I'd recommend you first learning to pick is "walking". Which is where you plant your thumb on either a lower string or a pickup , and striking the string with your index and middle fingers (later on you can throw in the ring finger for extra speed) I'd wait to practice what you mention in the video, that technique (double thumbing) is an added technique for when you play slap. There's nothing wrong with learning slap, but it'll make it harder later on to learn to pick traditionally if you try to learn slap first. The easiest way for me to get the hang of a 5 string way to think of the b string as a thumb rest, and the rest like the first 4 strings of a guitar. Chromatic exercises would help you get your stretch. As far as settings go, if the SR basses from ibanez are anything like their BTBs, I would turn the midrange potentiometer in between middle middle and low middle, boost it slightly, and slightly cut the bass and leave the treble at noon. Also I have one of those rumbles and the only thing I'd warn you about is how loud and how much you play the b string. Your speaker can tear if you don't be careful (especially with a thicc crunchy drive). I'm not too sure if the 40 watt one comes with a horn but but only use it for clean shit. I hope you get some use out of any of that, if you see it. I hope you have a wonderful time learning bass!

    Learn proper muting techniques. Sympathetic resonance is going to be a big problem (especially on a five string, you've just made it a lot harder for yourself). Both of your hands should be used to mute strings that aren't being played. If your plucking the B string, your left hand should be muting the E/A/D/G strings while your also fretting the notes. If your plucking the E string, you should rest your right hand thumb on the B string, while muting the A/D/G strings with your left hand. If your plucking the A string, your thumb should still be on the B string, but your ring/pinky finger should be resting on the E string, while your left hand is still muting the D/G strings. Continue this method for the remaining strings. Also learn the 1-2-4 method of fretting, and make sure you fret the strings with good force otherwise you get horrible fret buzz.

    • @joshyneurotic8589
      @joshyneurotic8589 6 лет назад

      I tend to use my fret hand for muting more, tho that is more to my physical make up (my left arm only turns slightly more then 90degrees rotation so I play my bass pretty low to compensate). this is also a great tip, muting, especially on the 5+ string is a must learn technique

    • @mziv112
      @mziv112 6 лет назад +1

      there is also the "floating thumb" technique in which instead of using the ring/pinky fingers in the right hand to mure while playing on the high strings you just bring the thumb down across the strings at a 90 degree angle to them while muting the higher strings normally with the left hand. this technique isn't for everyone but some people (including me) find this a tad easyer and more comfortable than the usual technique that you mentioned. one way or the other both are worth a try.. :)

      Landry Basket all of what cliff wrote was really classical based he was really into classical music and you can really hear that and that's why once he died the music really changed you couldn't hear it that well thanks to fucking Lars but in the black album and load to s and m you can really hear that difference between the newer stuff at the time to the cliff stuff

    Yo yo yo bassist here. Finbarbass Lessons and Scott's Bass Lessons helped me early on. Some songs that helped me learn techniques were Can't Stop and Scar Tissue, both by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Hysteria and Psycho, both my Muse, and Red Barchetta and Spirit of Radio, both by Rush. Once you get the hang of those, bass gets easier. Oh, and if picking is a cardinal sin, call me the zodiac killer.

      Shreding is up to the player but scales and arpegios is what bass is all about. Playing a good run behind the chords of a guitar instead of just running roots brings a song to life and allows the bass to be heard and not just as a low copy of the guitar.

    Alright, so, before getting into those advanced picking styles you should just start with resting your wrist over the top of the body instead of going around the body like a normal guitar. use your middle and index finger in a walking motion over the string you want to play. But you probably already knew that. I'd say the most important thing to realize is that this is not a guitar so don't play it like one and start developing bad habits. If you want to get into slap (which is actually easier that it looks) than try learning higher ground by RHCP its a great beginner slap song. even if you decide not to learn slap you should still listen to as much RHCP as possible. muting strings you don't want to play is essential. I like to rest the thumb on my picking hand on the string just below the one I'm playing. (this gets harder as you switch between strings faster but you'll get used to it). as you're playing a note rest the finger on your fretting hand on top of every string above the one you're playing. If you're really stubborn and can't get used to this (which I hope isn't the case) then using a pick isn't that bad. Other than that all I have to say is good luck and I wish you well.

If you want to learn some hard stuff on bass that's very interesting check out primus, it will definitely make you treat the bass differently than the guitar

    Hey m3rk I’ve been playing bass for a few years so I got some advice for you if you’re willing to listen. I would first Start off by putting your thumb on the pickup when you first start playing so you learn how to really traverse the bass strings before anything and pick when your pointer and middle finger with all the meat on the top of the finger. If your finding it hard to play most rock players use a pick so it’s not really frowned upon if you can play good with one. To better your dexterity on the bass because of the huge frets just run basic scales on the 7th fret to start off with then work your way up. I don’t know if you’ll even see throw but if you do just message me and I can help you out with anything else bass related

    The bass is more of a rhythmic instrument than a guitar so practice playing simple riffs and make little changes in the song that give that great sound to the bass! Also practice octaves,pauses and rests, slapping(although I would recommend first to learn playing with your fingers. It’ll help later. Also slapping needs new strings so for a base consumer(not the one who keeps the same strings for 20 years I’ve seen that). The last I have to say to help you, is to always be on time, always know what to play Rhythmically and stop thinking the bass as a guitar. If you do the things I just wrote you will get better at the bass very fast since you know guitar. I used to play guitar when I was little but now I play the bass and it can be an amazing instrument. Also let me know if I said something wrong and please correct me. I’m just here to help

    You should check out Fleas tutorial on how to slap. Look up how to pick on bass with your fingers, turn your gain up, You kinda messed up on getting an Ibanez bass you should have gotten a more user-friendly bass. I think that's just preference, but i enjoy having the Jazz and precision pickups. Fenders are known for having good basses. You could tune your bass like a guitar so you could learn in with familiar songs and ways to play them.

    • @YaBoyReiner
      @YaBoyReiner 6 лет назад +1

      Gotham Metal I agree, Fleas vid helped a ton...but I guess he got an Ibanez since he's familiar with the brand...plus a good Fender ain't cheap

    • @calen1993
      @calen1993 6 лет назад

      The Ibanez might not be "user friendly" for a true beginner but the EQ and build quality is really good for the price. Most decent Fenders that beat a modern, soap-bar pickup active bass such as that ibanez, come in around double the price. It was a smart move by Eric, as he understands how the EQ works, he's no beginner. It will just take him a while to hear the difference in sound and get it where he likes it. Also, a bass is already tuned like a guitar, just the lower four strings plus what would be the seventh string on a guitar for his case. Tuning it differently wouldn't get him used to it.

      Comic Book Addict why use a pick little as possible? Have you never seen John Entwistle? The best bass guitarist to have walked this earth. He used some unique technics, educate yourself before making a stupid comment.

    I am not a bass player, but something that i do know, is that the lowest string will hum when you play the other strings. People who play 5 or 6 string basses have to learn to play a little different because you have to find a way to mute that humming string, i believe what they do is that they find a wau to keep theyre thumb resting on the string while you play the others

    I’d suggest watching some of the beginner stuff, although you are no beginner, but it will sometimes show you comfortable riffs that you can apply to much more difficult songs! :) hope this helps, also when I went and played bass at a guitar store, many people use their thumb and index finger, so I’d recommend trying that :)

  • @crispypeepohole69
    @crispypeepohole69 6 лет назад +3

    2:50 I don't believe this is true, the note you tune the highest on a 6 string is C. Also try to use your index and middle finger for strumming instead of your thumb (you probably have most of the basics down seeing as how this video is a few months old).
    *EDIT* Also I love how you view this as separate instrument and not having the "I can play guitar so I can obviously play bass" mentality.

  • @firefist8511

    If you're learning slap, use the pickups as a brace, aim for just below the string you want to play and let your thumb quickly slide off the string and onto the pickup.

    One of the biggest things I never knew bc I don’t know Music theory, but when playing slap, one of the biggest things to keep in mind is octaves, slap a note on one of the top three strings, and pop the string two down from the one you slapped, and two frets over from the one the one you slapped to get an octave, it sounds so great. I’m still an amateur tho so if you want legit advice go look at Scott’s Bass Lessons. He knows his shit. Love you M3rk
