I first saw Buddy when I was 12. My Mom got us tickets for my birthday. 1976. Wow! I had no idea what had just happened. But it was great! Never heard of Slingerland. I was heavily influenced in my drumming and am still playing to this day and have worked with some past Buddy alumni. What great stuff.

I used to go to the Disneyland Carnation Plaza every night and everyone sat on the floor and watched every set when Buddy's band came to town. It was 1977-1981 and I was 17-21 years old. I was a devoted Buddy Rich groupie and had a secret crush on Andy Fusco. Great memories!!

About Steve Marcus, noproblem, great sax. , technique, sound and vocabulary, but Andy Fusco, despite his great technique plays horribly out of tune from beginning to the end on his solo at 8:16, and in the section too, which sometimes is not perfectly in tune as it should be at this level .

People that give this a thumbs down have no taste in music.
Buddy was very interesting to listen to and his band swung.
Travis Barker is a good drummer and all, but Buddy Rich would drum circles around Barker.
Barker could definitely not play like Buddy could.

The 70's was a great time for big bands. I was fortunate to hear Buddy a bunch of times, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and Woody Herman. I heard the Basie reunion band in 1987 after The Count was gone. But to be honest the best big band I ever heard was the Navy Commodores led by Larry Skinner in I believe 1977. They played with Bill Watrous as the featured player at the Navy School of Music. By then most of the name big bands had younger players who were terrific but the Commodores had a lot of older seasoned players. But as music isn't an athletic competition with winners and losers it was a great time to listen to awesome Big Band Jazz from all those bands!

My heart goes out to his wife , but im devastated at his passing .

Unfortunately there is no second set that was videotaped and telecast at this concert. The Doug Meriwether BR discography is pretty reliable with this kind of thing, and it does not list a second set.
The big disappointment for BR fans has always been that the Meriwether discography DOES list that Channel One Suite was taped as the last song in this set, but it wasn't included in the broadcast!! What a shame.

Which was the first to use it Buddy Or Butch, could that be one of the reasons for the supposed feud between the two greats.

Buddy always plays Groov'en hard too Fast ! I know because I saw Bellson play it and Don was in the sax section and slowed it down to his tempo !!

I was goni to make a comment about that. In his later bands Buddy had a thing about playing really fast, sometimes to the detriment of the music. This is not a criticism per se, more of an observation as I love Buddy’s bands from Big Swing Face to the end. Saw the band a few times in the 70’s.
