Old school historians spoon fed us heroic narrative. Contemporary historians like to rub our noses in the shit. Much appreciated.

Suez was at the tail end of the national service period, an uncle of mine was over there. he's a nice "holiday" snap with his mate in a kilt on the Canal :)
(Yes, the Scottish regiments actually had their kilts with them on that, maybe had some nice ventilation "down below" in the heat!).

18:00, someone from the audience asks Beevor whether Western democracies produce less decisive leaders.

Fact is that the french communists were told not to resist the Germans as long as Germany was allied with the Soviet Union (Hitler-Stalin-Pact). Only after the german invasion of the Soviet-Union in july 1941 the comunistst started to fight against the germain occupiers. Such was the power of comrade Stalin over these deeply "humanistic" french "patriotic" communists!

I wonder why the Japanese archives are so difficult. Is it equally unhelpful to Foreign and Japanese historians?

What a pointless and disingenuous comment : the man writes history, does research, sells books and earns money for that. What exactly is your problem with that ?
