    A few reference pointers. 1) Italy’s record in 6 nations is 12w 92L 1 tie in 23 years. 2) Irish long kick was after 41 consecutive tackles and rucks. 3) NTH v STH is New Zealand’s north island vs South Island. (Like their all star game)

  • @jared_mintie
    @jared_mintie 11 месяцев назад +9

    hello :) NTH is North Island (New Zealand) versus STH for South Island (New Zealand). The match basically serves as a trial match for the upcoming international games of that year. It also only happens once every few years or so. We could easily go 5 years without the game happening. To qualify for NTH, for example, your first provincial rugby club must be located in the North Island and vice versa. You could currently play for a South Island-based team but could end up playing for NTH. It's a bit odd but it works, I suppose.

    Something that wasn't shown here, when Italy beat Wales (2.48 - 4.07) the man of the match award, which generally goes to the best player on the winning team, had already been awarded to Wales Josh Adams as everyone could see Wales had secured the win. Then Capuozzo made his incredible run and won the game for Italy in the dying seconds. After the match Adams went to find Capuozzo celebrating on the pitch to transfer him his well earned man of the match medal.

      @vaudevilleUK every time I've watched the US play, the issue never seems to be in their actual playing of the game. They just don't have the stamina to go 80 minutes without a break. They always seem to play a really good 1st half and then can't compete about 5-10 minutes into the 2nd half. I'm not aware of whether or not the American team has a lot of players from other sports or if they're all rugby their whole lives... but, I do know I cannot bear American football because it stops all the time and then the teams change... I never feel like I'm watching actual athletes. So I always wonder if the US team is filled with former US football players. Time to investigate I guess 😊

    Some context you might have missed from some of the videos.
    The game lasts 80 minutes but will carry on after that until the first stoppage after that (an infringement or ball in touch). If there's a clock on screen 'in the red' it's showing over 80 minutes which means it's the very last play of the game.

  • @newremote

    Nice reaction. A couple of things to notice on these replays is that the clock often shows more than 80 minutes, which means that time is up and the next stoppage is the end of the game. So no mistakes are possible. The other thing is the number of phases. One of the replays said 40 phases, which means that the attacking team has played the ball and been tackled 40 times already without a break. Attritional, energy sapping stuff. The red and blue teams at the end are Canterbury Crusaders (NZ) and NSW Waratahs (Australia). The Nth and Sth teams are NZ North Island versus South Island. These are very competitive traditional games which used to be more frequent and sometimes worked as trial matches to select the national team. They aren't very common now because schedules are so tight but a lot of people, including me, would like to see them come back.

    To give some context to some of these you need to understand that in rugby there is generally a huge gulf between the big boys (Traditionally New Zealand, South Africa, Australia & England... France, Ireland, Wales & Scotland all have spells now & again when they can match-up to the big boys) and the lesser nations (Italy, Argentina are kinda half way houses as they play regularly against the big boys but often lose, and then the true minnows like Japan, Samoa, Fiji etc...) Usually when one of the big boys play one of the minnows they rank up scores of 60/70/80 points, so to see a country like Japan actually beat South Africa is a huge, HUGE shock result.

      Not really true though is it. England has never, ever been a great team. They were boring and utterly hopeless even when I was a child in the 60s and 70s and despite having a few good players along they way, they're still not great. Ireland, Wales and France have always been better and play with passion. At least in those countries rugby is a religion whereas in England it's simply not. South Africa have only really been good in the last 20 years. Before that they never played anything as they were in isolation due to Apartheid. Australia not a good team now either.

      @@leastselfawarepotassium Really? I was brought up in a rugby family from the get go and it's pretty clear from comments on youtube and other SM sites who understand the game and those who don't. The original poster knows nothing about rugby history. Sadly many so called fans nowadays know nothing of the really great players and teams of the past. Most if not all teams have ups and downs (i.e Wales dominated the sport back in the day) with perhaps the exception of the ABs who have consistantly maintained a top position for decades (although thuggery was part of that in decades past). I saw SA play the ABs in the 1994 tour of NZ and they weren't that great but that was OK as they simply hadn't had the experinece of playing at an international level due to Apartheid. Perhaps you're pointing out what most already know - teams who make it to the semis and finals of RWC are not necessaily great teams. The fact that England and Argentina are 3rd and 4th in the current RWC (over the likes of far far better teams like Ireland and France) proves that point. In fact it almost makes a mockery of the whole way it's structured. Fortunately there have been complaints so maybe things will change.

    • @leastselfawarepotassium
      @leastselfawarepotassium 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@heidijames8825 if you’ve been following rugby for a long time then you would know the winning a World Cup is what most teams/ fans would consider the ultimate goal. South Africa still played some internationals during apartheid but even if you consider from 1995 onwards that’s still 28 years of international experience. I don’t think their comment is that inaccurate, except that I would consider Argentina in the top tier.
      I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that teams who make the semis and finals are not necessarily great teams. That’s a non sensical statement. What is the point of rugby then? This year is unique due to the draw being done so long ago.

  • @jamesdignanmusic2765

    One relevant rugby rule - the game lasts 80 minutes, but the final whistle doesn't go until the final play is completed. The 80-minute klaxon will go, but play continues until the ball next goes dead - so they could still be going after 85 minutes. That small player was very likely a half-back. They're the players immediately behind the scrum who move the ball out to the wingers (correction - number 15 - he was a full-back. Again, not in the scrum). That South Africa vs Japan game was a huge upset from the 2015 world cup. It was the first time Japan had ever beaten the Springboks. WAR vs CRU = Waratahs (New South Wales, Australia) and Crusaders (Northern South Island, New Zealand).

    Japan had never beaten South Africa, so that's why everyone reacted the way they did. Japan's coach at the time was retired All Black Jamie Joseph and 3 of the players including the captain were New Zealanders.
    So a bit of background information, the local rugby teams in Japan is owned and managed by the big car manufacturers Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan ect so they have been recruiting players from around the world with big contracts over the last decade.
    Which resulted in Japan making the Finals series for the first time in the last Rugby World cup which was also hosted by Japan.

    The one with Italy vs Wales was very important win for Italy as it was there first win after 36 losses since then I truly believe they been getting better & better, that said Italy didn't slack or always perform badly before then they could sometimes make you fight for your win & fight hard, this year they beat Wales again & draw against France, I believe they only draw because they missed the conversation & almost won a third game against England with the narrowest margin ever in an England vs Italy game (Italy 24 vs England 27).
    I believe they almost won more games over the last few years but due to some errors in the last few mins they lost, next years six nations will be very interesting to watch & I will admit as an English supporter I always cheer on Italy unless they play England of course.

    That field goal by Ireland is not just a punt. Field goals must be ‘Drop Kicks’, which is where the ball is dropped onto the ground and then kicked. The ball MUST hit the ground before the boot hits the ball. It is not an uncontested play, which is why it is such an incredible achievement to score a field goal in Rugby, in either Union, or League.

    The "kick" that won the game for Ireland over France was not just a common-or-garden punt, it was a drop goal, i.e. a half-volley in which the foot connects with the ball as it strikes the ground, a very fine art. Videos explaining rugby rules to newcomers seem to usually skip over the details of "field goals" as these are actually called in rugby. Just thought you needed to know to fully appreciate this very fine art. 🙂 These comments also apply to the match-winning field goal for the Crusaders v The Highlanders in the Rugby Championships (Southern Hemisphere competition immediately below international games). Crusaders and Highlanders are NZ teams, Bulls and Sharks are South African and Waratahs are from Australia.

    One of the absolutely outstanding Rugby Test Matches to watch is the 2015 game ebtween South Africa and Japan. Sth Africa’s Springboks outweighed the Japanese and towered over them in height, plus being one of the top three teams in the world, whereas Japan was ranked somewhere in the teens (I think) It was a game which saw die-hard Sth African fans stand and applaud the Japanese team’s performance in the face of overwhelming odds. I played the game as a kid in NZ and into my teens, playing for my High School First XV (The First Fifteen is the school’s top team) and I’m now 66. I liked watching this game more than many I’ve seen over the years, for many reasons, but the David and Goliath factor is the top one. I assure you, it will not be time wasted and is still an awesome game to watch. Look it up; 2015 World Cup, Sth Africa v Japan, played at Brighton Community Stadium. You won’t believe what you see.

    Ireland had a 19 point lead at one stage. AB's came back and scored 22 unanswered points to become the first First Tier nation to have an undefeated season. Ireland would latter defeat the AB's 3 times, twice in NZ which is phenomenal for any rugby nation.

    Hey bro, I have just recently discovered your channel and I wanted to say I'm absolutely loving your reactions to rugby. I also wanted to point out that, and forgive me if you already know, the game's duration is 80 minutes which consists of 2 40min halves with a 10 minute break for half time .
    So most of these highlights are clutch because the majority occurred in the last minutes of the game.
    You also need to be extremely fit because as you know the game does not stop, unless there's an infringement! So if you think about that there is the potential for a game to last, with no breaks for 40 minutes!

    You inadvertently missed the most famous one of all when you reset after the Japan clip (there's a 30 sec section between 3:30 and 4:06 - the world cup final between England & Australia)

    Northern hemisphere vs Southern hemisphere is the NTH and the STH. Theyre like best of teams, so NTH will have players from England France Wales Italy Scotland etc and STH will have players from South Africa, Australia, NZ, Argentina etc. They aren't like big championship games they're like exhibition matches or to see who's brand of rugby is considered best.

      I think a lot of Americans are starting to get rugby and I think it has a much better chance of going somewhere big in the USA more than football (soccer) does. A lot of them see it is as like NFL with the annoying downs removed to they can get into the passes of play, which is something I think they've been yearning for in their own sports. But a lot of the play acting in soccer puts them off, and it puts us all off! But rugby is played by real men and they dont argue or throw their weight around against referees half their size. They take the ruling, don't question it then get on with it. So of all British invented sports I think rugby could have the best future stateside and in the future playing the usa could be like playing SA or NZ. Why not..look at the size of the talent pool you guys have. There's no reason it couldn't become a big sport in the USA.

    By way of context, in the first match, ireland, although drawing once previously, had bener previously beaten the All Blacks in over 100 years of international matches. And in this match in November 2013 they were so close, which adds to the poignancy and disappointment. All was rectified less than three years later when Ireland finally beat the ABs strangely enough, in Chicago, to end the 100 year loosing streak. ruclips.net/video/K2jh7__LAto/видео.html
    Since then results between the two teams have been reasonably even but Ireland did emulate only two other teams in history in 2022 when Ireland beat the ABs 2-1 in a series on their own turf in New Zealand

    And as for the Johnny Sexton drop goal to beat France, all you see here are the last 5 seconds. The move started almost 10 minutes previously, with a missed French penalty. Ireland played almost 41 phases from their own line without loosing possesion to finally put Sexton in position to drop the goal to win the match. Ireland went on to beat all other 6 home nation countries in that year 2018 and win the Grand Slam. ruclips.net/video/QOjF6rRRHWQ/видео.html
