Steve Spurrier had this little thing that's discouraged for virtually everyone in the public eye now: a personality. He wasn't afraid to fire off some slick insults to get a rise out of his opponents. Him throwing jabs and stirring things up brought tons of media attention and got fans on both sides excited. There’s one more important part to this rivalry that I can’t believe wasn’t mentioned in this video: In 2013, a 5-7 Tennessee team upset South Carolina. If Tennessee doesn’t win that game, Spurrier goes to the SECCG and possibly takes South Carolina all the way to the national championship game. After that year, all of South Carolina’s best players left, their championship window was locked shut, and Spurrier quit less than two years later. Tennessee got the last laugh out of this rivalry. Spurrier gave South Carolina a championship window, and Tennessee closed it.
Just yesterday, Spurrier, now the head coach of the AAF’s (Alliance of American Football) Orlando Apollos, took a jab at UT after a road win against San Antonio when he said the crowd at the Alamodome “was just as loud as ‘Rocky Top,’ but the Swamp is much louder.”
For all that happened in those years, both teams were playing with one goal in mind for all of those seasons. When it was all over, the final score was one to one.
The Litkenhous System, which didn't count the bowl games, chose Tennessee as the national champion for 1967, and the NCAA recognizes this. This is what happens when you count national championships like Alabama does.

Can’t believe you didn’t mention the 1999 game that the refs made a terrible call on Jabar Gaffney’s TD in the final seconds. That one stung UT hard, too. That 1999 team basically had everyone back from 1998. If UT had held on in that game then they very likely had a rematch with FSU in the BCS national championship. They had beaten eventual SEC champ Alabama on the road and had their number. So, it would’ve been easy to assume they would’ve won the SEC title and get the bid to the BCS.
