We want police to be suspicious of crime not be suspicious of hobbies,pastimes and strange behaviour which could be a person choosing to wear a fancy dress costume, stand wading in a river to catch a fish only to throw it back, stand in a train station noting train numbers, there must be thousands of shoplifters to catch.
Please don’t go above and beyond what you are legally required to provide. These costume wearers will start to expect innocent people to prove their innocence let’s make the coppers do their job and learn the rules like what the Sub 250 drones can do. It shouldn’t be incumbent upon citizens to teach them.

Like the way a cop has your license and traffic citation all written and ready to give to you but instead decides to hold it just so you hav3 to stay and listen to the cop scold you like a child. Tell them as little as possible, state from the outset you are acting within the law and show them a copy of the NPCC guidance on public photography then (politely) tell them to go away and stop interfering with a drone pilot.
Always a good question to ask if you're being detained, as they do not have the power to detain a person on foot unless it's for the purpose of a search or an arrest, which is a form of detainment in itself.

You forgot to tell them that its an offence, for anyone, not just police, to interfere with someone flying a drone unless an offence is being or thought to be being committed, as they said they did not know the laws on drones they did not have the power to ask you to bring it down, however, they were very polite and did state they knew nothing about drone law, think they were very polite, smiling, laughing and professional.
I loved this, it was two honest police officers that admitted you knew more than them on the subject of drones, they were personable and friendly and listened. You did a great jog being polite, but descrete and then informative…well done
Some police don't realise that there are different drone categories and sub catergories based on weight. (Open category - A1, A2, A3). The actual offence would be flying a drone that weighs more than 250g without having the A2CofC qualification. For now, drones between 250g and 500g can be flown 'close to people' and in built up areas with A2CofC (but not intentionally above people) and drones that are between 500g and 2kg (A2) can be be flown with A2CofC but must be min 50 metres away from people, and drones between 2kg and max 25kg (A3) must be flown away from people and min 150 metres from buildings or recreational areas (basically in the wilderness somewhere).

Basically an operator ID is a must in most cases. I use the DJI mini 4K, probably the best entry level drone you can buy. Can only get them on Amazon at the minute. It's effectively a 4k version of the Dji mini 2 se, with 4k video. Very well made drones, tried and tested design.

Great to see posts by people who know the legislation! I keep hearing pilots claim they don't need to give details unless they are suspected of committing an offence and I'm waiting for the day they end up in trouble.
As always happy to do anything but real police work like visiting people whose homes have been burgled or assault victims or scam victims or even keeping an eye on known child molesters, sex pests, suspected drug dealers and organised crime figures. None of that is as important as bothering people with cameras in public, and all this after being told by their superiors that recording is not a justification for questioning anyone.
They tried their hardest but as they admitted they were so totally out of their knowledge depth. Better they got back to something they are probably better at, namely helping kids cross a road. Like your style.
You missed the chance to tell them, the only offence was them distracting a drone pilot, whilst flying. They were actually pleasant enough, but you were a bit soft when they first approached and kept bugging you while flying.

Great to see posts by people who know the legislation! I keep hearing pilots claim they don't need to give details unless they are suspected of committing an offence and I'm waiting for the day they end up in trouble.

As always happy to do anything but real police work like visiting people whose homes have been burgled or assault victims or scam victims or even keeping an eye on known child molesters, sex pests, suspected drug dealers and organised crime figures. None of that is as important as bothering people with cameras in public, and all this after being told by their superiors that recording is not a justification for questioning anyone.

They tried their hardest but as they admitted they were so totally out of their knowledge depth. Better they got back to something they are probably better at, namely helping kids cross a road. Like your style.
You missed the chance to tell them, the only offence was them distracting a drone pilot, whilst flying. They were actually pleasant enough, but you were a bit soft when they first approached and kept bugging you while flying.
