I absolutely love seeing your videos pop up in my feed. You inspire me so much. You are so relatable. No fancy craft rooms, no fancy fabrics or equipment. You are what so many of us woman are. When watching other RUclipsrs, we feel we need all the bells and whistles, and in turn, fear and doubt sets in. You use affordable materials, your down to earth, you have fun, and enjoy every stitch. You truly are a joy to watch. Thank you so much for sharing!
I love all that you do & how you explain everything so well! That red sampler quilt is just stunning…front & back❣️You are a gifted, very one-of-a-kind quilter❣️ So special-thank you for taking the time to film & share 🥰
I like it. Every quilt you showed is uncommon, unique, and special. I enjoyed listening to your comments and ideas. You're a RUclips friend I appreciate, and admire. I'm a beginner at this and will probable get better with time. Presently making an Irish chain quilt.
I love an Irish chain quilt! You will absolutely pick up new tricks and ideas (and speed) over time-- keep learning and trying new things! I never ever thought of myself as creative or artistic, but it's true that if you're making something scrappy, it will be a one-of-a-kind quilt.
I love your red and white quilt. I can't believe you hand quilted it in 20 days. I really want to make a red and white quilt. It's my favorite color. Maybe when I retire.
Your sampler quilt is gorgeous. I am also a scrap quilter and have spent the last year trying to use up some of my scraps. They were out of hand. I dug into my strip scraps and enlisted my mom’s help. Taught her how to string quilt and we have almost finished 5 string quilts. She is hooked!! Now I keep her in scraps and jelly rolls and she is having a blast.
Hi, just can't believe the beautiful work you do. I must say that you hand quilt really fast. Wish I could quilt that fast. If I lived next door to you, I would be at your door ready to quilt with you any time. I love the quilts you make and some day I'd like to make a 2 color quilt also. Maybe for Christmas! Have a wonderful day. Thank you for sharing and I will be here for your next video.
Hi! So glad to see a new video today! You are multi-talented. I would really like to see more videos of your hand piecing. I'm a Newby to hand quilting, and I can see myself learning great techniques from you. I have about 5 quilts set aside for hand piecing. Enjoy your day! Thanks for sharing your time 😃🌟🌟🌟
The red and white quilt is stunning!! Love the entire other quilt on the back. Like everybody else who watches you, I get excited when I see your video pop up and I also follow you on Instagram. Thank you so much for sharing your creative sprit and passion and humor with us.
You are so inspirational! I am a beginner quilter but older in age. I just started learning to sew last year. I missed so many years I could be making so many things. Better late than never!! I love your Red quilt sampler quilt, I love ON POINT quilts they are my favorite. It is BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you I learn so much from every video.
It's absolutely better late than never! They say there are "project people" and "process people." Meaning some people find the highest value in having a completed quilt, and some value the process of quilting the most. I'm a "process" person; once I finish a quilt, I don't really think about it anymore. If you're the same type, it doesn't matter how late you start, each day that you get to sew will be fulfillng in itself. (AND you'll have finished projects!) I love quilts set on point, also, but I still make mistakes setting them up more often than I should! They can be tricky for me.
OK, I'm a little spooked by this vid. Just yesterday I cut scraps to make yoyo's. Then was looking at my husband's ties and was thinking...would he miss them? Would he notice if they turned up in a quilt? And here you are... 😊
I really look forward to your videos, Sue! Your enthusiasm for quilting is contagious, and I always learn something new from you. I also admire your creative thriftiness, and resourcefulness. You are a true artist!
What a treat to see another video from you :) You are such an inspiration! I absolutely adore that red quilt and the back was amazing! Thank you for making these videos, as the make my day, and no doubt , do the same for many others :)
Thank you! I also love red and white, and blue and white quilts. I recently got out all my blue and white ones, and it turns out I have far more than I thought...
I enjoyed watching your video today; I learned a lot. I too, have took an interest in hand quilting- so thank you for showing us what you are working on. 🙂☀️☕️
Sue, you are so amazing. Love to see everything you have done and are working on. My mojo is not with me right now for some reason. I hope it comes back soon because there are so many quilts I want to do. Watching you makes me so happy.😊❤
I'll say it again....love your red and white sampler. That was genius to pin the color catchers right to the quilt. Really enjoying your videos. I am originally from Delaware County, now in central NJ.
Another wonderful video Sue. I would dearly love to see how you hand quilt. I have hand quilted for many years but it is so laborious and sllooowww. Your speed is just remarkable. I am also grateful to you for showing us how you prepare and store men’s shirts. I have a lot but stored the pieces flat so I couldn’t see them and they never got used. Now they are nicely folded into visible packets ready to go. I just love your scrap content. Thank you so much. Laima from Canada
Hi I love your channel. I find it so interesting how different people quilt differently. I see you hand quilt with your pointer finger and you like to quilt toward yourself in a straight line. I quilt with my middle finger and I like to quilt at an angle toward myself. I find it hard to make a straight line when I quilt straight toward me. So cool. And that red and white sampler is GORGEOUS! Try the Clover Dome Threaded Needle Case to store needles. I have 2 of them and that's 20 needles ready to go. When I finish quilting for the day, I rethread while I watch TV so I'm ready for the next go round. Very portable. And Guterman hand quilting thread is waxed very well.
Colour catchers ...someone had mercy on we quilters when they marketed these. Your works are lovely. thank you for sharing them and the head lamp tip (about the red mark). We who live alone and rarely look in the mirror LOL!
Haha, isn't that the truth! I'm not someone who gets dressed up to leave the house-- but I don't want to wonder why people are staring at my forehead! I agree, color catchers are just vital. I'd be afraid to make red and white quilts without them.
Stunning quilt! Hand quilting seems to be a lost art. I appreciate your dedication to keeping it alive! I would be so intimidated. Wow!! New subscriber by the way. Hello from Ohio 😊
Hi Sue! This video just popped up in my feed and I'm so glad it did! You are a qifted quilter! Beautiful work. 😮 Only 20 days to hand quilt that red beauty! Amazing! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your work. Thanks for sharing! ❤
Your quilts are beautiful! Thanks for showing the colour catchers after the wash! It’s amazing how that absorbed all the colours and left your quilt looking so perfect.
Just stumbled on your post,Am I glad! I absolutely love your red quilt and all the special blocks you added. thank you for the helpful tips on dye catchers! You are a dear! And I look forward to to watching more of your posts💓
What a delightful channel you have. You do a little bit of Sew long and you’re very knowledgeable. You gave several wonderful Tips. I have used color catchers, but didn’t use as many as you did and that was an excellent tip to pin them to the Quilt in spot you thought may bleed, as well as Thornton extras. I’ve always only use three or four, but I always always pre-washed on my fabrics until they quit bleeding. I learned a little bit of your Hand quilting, technique, and your design talent is incredible. You are from blocks look wonderful set together and that red and white is Over the top beautiful. Thank you so much. I’m glad I ran across you and I have subscribed.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh My! You are a treasure and I love watching! I can see your love in your work. I love the red quilt and see why this is a keeper. I love the muslin heart and the other special blocks that have a personal meaning. I love anything that has a story. I love telling my stories to anyone who will listen😂. I read another scrappy quilter who said she always throws in at least one “odd” or different block or color..just because❤I was so thankful for your comments on hand quilting..so great. Please consider ending “All” your videos with a minute of hand quilting!! We all need to see, watch this. I saw my mother’s hands in yours❤❤
It really is amazing, all of the different memories and emotions we connect with quilts. So much more than fabric can be put into them. Thank you so much for your comment!
You did an amazing job!!! Thank you for sharing and being an inspiration to others. I’m just starting to learn quilting, this gives me more desire to keep trying. Thank you 👍 Looking forward to the next video
Hi. I know I’ve seen one of Sue’s quilts with a crochet edge attached. It’s gorgeous, it’s in an earlier video, but can’t remember which one, sorry. Enjoy searching x
I remember seeing her show the lace on a quilt on one of her other videos, so I looked back to see which one it is. It's Episode 2, titled Scrappy Stars, around the 20 minute time stamp mark. It's exactly the same lace she's working on now. ❤
@ great news. Thanks for sharing this. I was hoping to get a chance to look next week. I am so busy making Xmas decorations at the moment and trying to use my scraps. 🎄
Sue what a gorgeous red and white quilt! That's incredible! That 2nd sampler quilt is so pretty too. How lovely! I have really been enjoying your videos, I love how simple you keep things.
I so enjoyed this video. You popped up unexpectedly...I have seven more to go back and catch up on. I have been anticipating a red and white quilt. Yours is beautiful. I am now excited to move forward with mine. Thanks for the inspiration.
I have always had making a red and white quilt on my to make list. I’m a fairly new quilter and most of my quilts so far have been made for my family. Most of them were queen or king size. So, now that those 13 are done I can make the red and white one for myself. The amount of quilting making you accomplish is so amazing to me. It makes me wonder if there are more than 24 hours in a day in Pennsylvania 😊.
Color catchers are a needle workers best friend. I even use them on my hand dyed, hand spun, hand knit clothing.Especially red and blue dyes Happy hand quilting
Absolutely! It's too disappointing to put all that work in to your craft, to have the whole thing turn pink in the end. My daughter also dyes, spins, and knits!
Nice! I think frames, like so many other things in quilting, should just be chosen based on what you feel most comfortable with. I started out with these frames, and just stuck with them.
The sampler quilt is just stunning!! Thank you for the tip on pinning the color catchers! I'm getting ready to make a quilt that will have red sashing and was planning on using a boat load of them, but now I'll be cutting and pinning all along the sashing AND throwing in loose ones. The orphan block quilt is going to be so cute!
I noticed amizon sells bars of bees wax, I think I'm going to grab it for quilting thread, you can cut it into smaller chunks and it comes in a 4 pack about the size of soap bars ;) My problem is I'm Candian so its harder to access some of things, or the cost of shipping is ridiculous
I love seeing the variety of quilts you make and the methods you use. It’s all so inspirational. I must use more colour catchers at a time and then `I’ll get better results. In the Uk we don’t have the same shopping opportunities that you seem to have. Thank you 🎉
Wow! I love the red and white quilt especially the back! There is a strip heart at minute 23:21 that is so adorable! You really inspire me as I love working with scraps and orphan blocks and I have been getting so many ideas from your videos! Great job! I’m looking forward to future videos!
Good morning, Sue! Your red and white sampler is gorgeous!!!! I just discovered you a few days ago. Not only do I really enjoy your content, but you remind me so much of both of my grandmothers, both of whom have been gone for several years now. I can attest to the red spot on your forehead from the headlamp! I wear one to milk my goats and cows with, then take my daughter to school. I have had to go help with so many morning school functions with a red spot on my forehead 🤦♀️
It definitely takes time. But, like with most things, it goes quicker with practice. That being said, machine quilting is also beautiful! I hope you do try some hand quilting on something small!
Hi, Sue, I’m new to your channel and am very impressed with the scrappy beauty of your designs. I would love to see what your hand under the quilt is doing while you take those fast, tiny stitches. My 82 year old eyes and fingers find big stitch Kantha type quilting works best for me. Thanks for sharing and that red sampler quilt is stunning - both sides.
Apologies in advance for the long comment: So much eye candy in this one! Loved seeing you hand quilting. I've only done it for three projects (a wall hanging and two mini quilts) out of the many I've made. I have a "bucket list" queen size wholecloth project basted but admit I haven't gotten very far on it since I set it up two years ago. As someone else commented, boy you quilt fast! I bet that's because you do it a lot and so you have put in the hours to become very proficient at it. A lesson for us all. I was surprised to hear that Thread Magic was once so cheap! I do remember buying it at a cheaper price than I've had to pay recently when I started needing to stock more of it since I started cross stitching. However, never for as chaep as you used to get it!! From now on I'm keeping an eagle eye out for sales of it! Lastly like others have commented, I love, love, love the red and white sampler! Then you went further and made it "two sided" with a Capenter's Wheel Star on the "back", Bravo! Having made a bunch of red and white quilts for Christmas decorating a couple of years ago I thought I was done but looking at your sampler, I think I might have to pull out the scraps I have left over, go find some vintage blocks, make a couple of embroideries and think about doing the same, LOL!! Have you ever considered submitting that for display in a show? You'd ribbon for sure!!
The "problem" with crafting is that we get new ideas faster than we can finish the old ones! In the long run, that's probably a good thing, there's always something to work on. I'm sure you'll come back to the wholecloth quilt-- big projects are most intimidating at the start, but making a bit of progress is reinvigorating. I'm glad to hear you want to make a red and white quilt, also-- they are always beautiful! I've never entered anything into a show-- and I made an error on this one, which would be noticed in a show, but it works just fine for my bed.
@@fromsmallthings509 Yes, I'll eventually get back to the wholecloth. You are right, it seems way more daunting when I only have a little of it done. Maybe I'll make that a project for the cold, gray winter days. Regarding entering the RW Sampler into a show: it doesn't have to be a judged show where they critique your work. I'm sure a lot of quilters (and even non-quilters) would enjoy seeing this piece just displayed in a local show. The variety and significance of the block sources you used, the hand quilting and the overall look and inspiration it provides would thrill many. Any "mistakes" make it more human like the beautiful vintage quilts we see in museums.
If not too much to ask, please share anything you are making with men's ties - or anything you have made already if you still have any of your finished pieces. Thank you for the idea of pinning 1/2 sheet color catchers to possible extra dye areas. Your sampler quilt is absolutely beautiful as is your quilt back wow!! Your hand quilting is amazing. I was doing some sashiko the other night and the next morning my hand was so swollen from just a 6" square. I can't imagine hand quilting such a big piece. Maybe I'll make it a year project to hand finish the quilt I'm making for my bed.
I have two tie quilts-- one of which I will always keep. I love the look of them, but it is a lot of prep work to get the ties ready to use, which is why I don't use them more often. I'm sure I'll share the tie quilts at some point! Hand quilting absolutely takes a toll on your hands-- and it changes them. I have built up calluses, but they only get you so far. If your hand is feeling tight, maybe it would be possible to adjust how you're holding your needle...? I know a few people whose hands cramp up pretty quickly when doing hand work, and mine seem not to-- maybe it's just different bodies handling things differently. Hand quilting takes a long time, anyway, I think it's a great idea to take it slowly. I would suggest quilting for a short time, every day; it may help your hands get used to it without hurting them.
The red and white sampler quilt is just beautiful. I'm going to invest in Color Catchers! Did you pin to the front and the back in the problem areas or just to the front? 20 days to finish the quilting?! Amazing.
The fabric I was most worried about was only on the front of the quilt, so I pinned color catchers to those spots. The red pieces I used on the back came to me as larger pieces of fabric, so I was able to wash them before sewing. But I think it's worth it to go overboard with color catchers when washing the quilt-- I don't want to see it turn pink after all those hours of work.
I just love your videos! Always a pleasure to see and hear you! I’m from Very Windy today South Dakota prairies! Your taste is my taste! I pray for a lovely day today for you! I learn so much from you! Thank you! I broke the middle finger on my dominate right hand and have only been able to use leather thimbles but they wear holes in them and are expensive! I see you wear thimble on thumb and first finger never saw that before! I love your thread caddy I’d love to get one! Any ideas where to get one? What thread do you use? What needles do you use? Thanks
My metal thimbles get holes, too. They always get a single hole where my needle hits-- I try to rotate the thimble to keep this from happening, but the needle ALWAYS finds the hole! They used to last longer, but quality has gone down a lot. At least they are cheap! I've also tried those rubber/silicone ones to on my hand underneath the quilt, but I can't. I have to feel the needle come through. I don't know where the thread caddy came from, since it was a gift... but I use Coats & Clark glazed hand quilting thread-- it comes on a green spool. For needles, I generally use Roxanne betweens, size 9.
Thank you for such an informative video. All of your tips are very valuable. I would like to know, what size is your hoop? Where did you purchase your bishop fan stencil? Amazon has them but they do not look like the right size. That thread caddy is wonderful, I have one that I purchased many years ago which I love and use a lot too. Your quilts are all just beautiful. Thanks again!
thread heaven and thread magic are just silicone putty. I buy silicone earplugs for almost nothing at the pharmacy and refill my containers and it works exactly the same. I can barely tell which containers are the real thing and which I have refilled.
Another excellent podcast. Your red and white quilt is magnificent and quilted beautifully. I just love hearing all about your projects. I am trying to follow you on Instagram and sent an invite message to you on November 11th. I’m unable to sent another message or picture of my Tiny Nine Patch quilt you said you would like to see until you accept my invite. Hope to hear from you soon. Looking forward to your many future podcasts.
I use Coats & Clark hand quilting thread; it is a blend of cotton and polyester, and glazed. I also condition it with Thread Heaven. Polyester content and a glazed thread are stronger than an unglazed cotton thread would be; I find it nice to work with and it lasts over the years. But I think it comes down to personal preference-- whatever is comfortable for you to use is the best one!
Wait, how did the quilting on the back did not or showed through to the front? You used different thread colors of red and white but I want to know or see clearly how that came through to the front. Would you please show a better close up? Thank you for all that you do to share your knowledge, skills and talent.
It is quilted with white thread through all of the layers, with the baptist fan motif. The quilting shows up more clearly on the back because the blocks are so large and not very busy; on the front, your eye picks out the patterns of the blocks themselves, instead of the quilting. I always find that after washing a quilt, when it becomes crinkled, the quilting pattern I chose is very obscured; so I choose stitching patterns which I enjoy doing and which are fairly closely quilted, rather than something fancy which won't be seen in the end, anyway. Hope this helps!

I'm so glad you enjoyed the episode! It's wonderful that you wash your fabrics so carefully before sewing with them, to be sure nothing is ruined. When I get yardage, or even larger scraps, I put them through the wash before adding them to my stash; but often I get very small scraps at sales, which would turn into a real mess if I threw them in the washing machine. I suppose I could soak them in a small container, but life's too short, I suppose!

Also, have you done the big stitch quilting? I did on one quilt. I liked it. It’s hard though, with arthritis
Your sampler quilt is beautiful and I love that you have some special blocks from your daughter and sister ❤❤

I too have a box of ties that I got at a church thrift sale. I would love to see your tie quilts.
Thanks
The nine patch with snow ball blocks is very pretty. Beautiful hand quilting too
I just love red and white quilts
Me too! I started making a collection of them to keep for myself. I think we are going to film a bed turning of red and white quilts next month.
The red & white quilt is beautiful! I love the blue & white too

Beautiful work. Don't know how you get so much done so quickly.
I love the way you set your blocks on your red sampler quilt with the cornerstones!
Hi Sue! This video just popped up in my feed and I'm so glad it did! You are a qifted quilter! Beautiful work. 😮 Only 20 days to hand quilt that red beauty! Amazing! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your work. Thanks for sharing! ❤
Thank you so much!
Your quilts are beautiful! Thanks for showing the colour catchers after the wash! It’s amazing how that absorbed all the colours and left your quilt looking so perfect.
Thank you! Yes, color catchers are a must-have!
Absolutely beautiful red quilt
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I hope you also grow a love for quilting; it has been an important touchstone in my life through all the ups and downs.
Would love to see a quilt with the crocheted lace added.
I just learned about color catchers. Well worth the effort and not expensive. My quilt binding was red and the catchers got it all 😮
Good!! I am so grateful for them.
Sue what a gorgeous red and white quilt! That's incredible! That 2nd sampler quilt is so pretty too. How lovely! I have really been enjoying your videos, I love how simple you keep things.
Thank you so much!
I so enjoyed this video. You popped up unexpectedly...I have seven more to go back and catch up on. I have been anticipating a red and white quilt. Yours is beautiful. I am now excited to move forward with mine. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'm sure your red and white quilt will be stunning. They tend to be striking quilts.
Love the pattern and the colors. ...and the great tipps! Greetings to PA from GER 💞
Love seeing all your projects 😃 would love to see maybe a small tutorial on your baptist fan quilting technique happy quilting 😃
A king size quilt is a HUGE amount of work! I have never made one that big. It definitely sounds like time you made one to keep for yourself!
@@fromsmallthings509 💕
Thank you for an enjoyable journey. My daughter gave me a quilt frame like the one you use. I think I will give it a try next time I do a quil
Sounds like a good plan! It worked for this quilt. It's worth doing what you can to protect the hours of work you've put into your quilt.
I have that same pin cushion - It was in my MIL’s stash when she gifted it to me! Also, I use a small scrap of soap as a conditioner for my thread.
I'm so glad to hear it!
Haha, I love to know there are others out there with circles from head lamps! They are just so useful.
I've always liked hand quilted quilts, I just don't have the patience for it. Maybe some day I'll try a small quilt. Your quilts are beautiful.
It definitely takes time. But, like with most things, it goes quicker with practice. That being said, machine quilting is also beautiful! I hope you do try some hand quilting on something small!
wow, so beautiful!!!! i am a big fan of your work and videos. bets wishes for your health from silke from nuremberg, germany
Thanks so much for watching, all the way over in Germany!
What thread do you use for the hand quilting. I’ve been thinking of getting started and loved your tips!
4:41 when you're quilting on blue and top, are you just eyeballing the 1 inch when there's no pieced seam to follow?
PS..I wanted to ask what kind, brand of thread you hand quilt with? Show us how and when you condition that thread. Thanks, (KH)
I use Coats & Clark hand quilting thread, on the green spool. It is glazed poly/cotton.
Thank you for letting me know-- I looked and found your request! Sorry about that, I didn't know about the requests hiding there!
P.S. What kind of handing quilting thread is best to use? Thank you again. 🙂
I hope you know you can reuse color catchers
What kind of batting do you use for hand quilting
I use Warm & Natural 80/20 cotton/poly blend with scrim; I choose 90" width because that's what my basting floor will accomodate.
