Ever since is seen that bass in a video of Metallica performing 'for whom the bell tolls' live in 'day on the green 1985' I have been in love with that bass! Everything from its simplistic headstock design, to its elegant curves on the body. It is so much more than just a bass, it's a work of art....
I totally agree; I’d love to get this bass if I could; who cares if it would be my starter instrument; I’d ABSOLUTELY treasure this amazing beast of a bass!! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻⚡️⚡️
It's ridiculous how people stereotype bass players who play with fingers as "Real Bass Players" and bass players who play with picks as "Fake Bass Players". What the hell is wrong with people these days.
Utter bullshit...Rex Brown, Dave Ellefson and Chris Squire are premium examples of excellent bass players who use pick (too bad CS passed away, nothing can beat a vintage Rickenbacker with cranked treble and mids played with a plectrum)
Loving this video, love the cleaner tone your getting with the pick. It's all subjective, i use pick and fingers depending on the song. What you have shown is Orion sounds great with a pick! thanks for the upload!
I don't mind the pick usage, plenty of great bassists use picks, but cliff had got his tone from smacking the strings against the pickup with his fingers (the "chime" technique) which gave him a certain tone that he got from this specific bass guitar ( especially in Orion and Master of Puppets). You simply can't get that tone out of a pick, which is my only problem with this video showcasing the tone.
John Francis yes plenty of player's use pick I do to a lot some tones and I strumming my bass like lemmi killmister like strumming a gutairs but dammit man if you are going to do this play like cliff man who do you think you are
@@tylerbrah4676 The closest thing to slapping the bass was smacking the strings. In For Whom The Bell Tolls, the smacks some chords. You can see it live, he also smack the e string in some parts of Ride The Lightning. Like the intro and near the end.

J.J. There's a very distinct difference in tone between finger picking and using an actual pick. Just listen to the bass master tracks of cliff and compare them to the bass master tracks of Jason.
this is a quote from cliff burton when asked why he was listening to southern rock and he plays metal he said u dont always have to play a million miles an hour GOOD SHIT IS GOOD SHIT so it doesnt matter if u use a pick or your fingers u play how u feel good playin
His playing was tighter and more accurate to cliffs part than most covers, the pick was the only difference and it didn't take away from the song. I'll take this guy over most other players any day.
Keep crying about finger and plectrum techniques and how you are supposed to play this and that silly kids. Great medley mate and fantastic sound from this sweet baby.
The real bass players in this comment section are just commenting on the tone of the bass or whether he you know missed a note or something. People that are arguing about pick or no pick and getting all triggered about that probably can't play that well and need to have that argument to sound like they know music. Instead of just congratulating someone on pretty good cover of a Clif Burton riff.. people that are secure in they're playing style and secure and their ability.. not worried about the pick or fingers I just wanted to hear the tone how good it was..
playing it the jason way, which imo makes it more of an evil sound so i prefer it, but when ill play it ill chuck in a few burton notes to make it sound a little more impressive
Actually he doesn’t because when you listen to the studio version of it Cliff does “19-18-17-16” but in the live he does “19-18-17-16 then 19 pull of 16 “
I was going to mention the pick but it appears everyone else beat me to it lmao. Great medley though, you nailed it and it's always great to some classic riffs!
I see people in this comment saying "people are gonna get triggered over him using a pick" yet I haven't even seen a comment getting mad at the dude using a pick lol.
They still played Orion live. There are people who have stated online who saw metallica live in 93' at one specific concert where Jason did play Anesthesia. Back then not all concerts were recorded
I would use a pick as well just to piss off you nerds. I'm willing to bet most of those complaining about the pick aren't in bands, play in their parents basement out of a 15 watt combo amp and can't play in-time to a simple mid-tempo riff.
It's funny that he plays seek and destroy (kill em all) and from whom the bells tolls (Ride the lighting). these albums were recorded with a Rickenbacker bass, Cliff started to use Aria pro in the recording studio on Master of puppets album.
yeah I was gonna say seeing cliffs signature bass played with a pick.....I never play bass with a pick personally. I also play guitar and I actually play finger style a lot unless playing stuff that requires a lot of picking. for me finger style is more natural...
honestly idc that he used a pick because it sounds like the rig only if cliff used a pick i can without doubt imagine that no pick it would sound exactly like it because its the exact bass only fine tuned to cliffs liking
I've been playing bass for years now, and one thing I learned is that there are certain advantages from using a pic and certain advantages from using your fingers ... I will say this though, I use a pic, because you get a lot more volume on stage... Using your fingers makes your playing sound a bit muted., And I personally don't care for that sound, I like a real punchy clean tone.. using your fingers sometimes your notes sound muddy... But I will say when we play Blues songs.. I use my fingers because I don't want to roll modern sound when I'm playing Blues, so using your fingers helps get more of a stand up bass style sound..
Although i do agree that fingers are better for volume you can still achieve similar results by adjusting you plucking technique having a technique similar to steve harris aggressively hitting the strings downwards although this style tends to skin you fingertips the first few times
People bitching about the pick probably can’t even play the lines in the first place. I play with a pick and the only time someone got on me about it I handed them my bass and told them to play it better. No response
