If I hadn't been told that it was India Adams singing in "Torch Song" for Joan Crawford, I'd swear that it was Constance Towers. Adams sounds EXACTLY like Towers' numbers sung in episodes of Perry Mason!
"Joan Crawford in tropical makeup". Haha, there's another word for that makeup, "blackface". Tsk tsk, Joan. Cyd Charisse was amazing. Interesting seeing her lovely sequence along with Crawford's ghastly wtf performance.
Amazing that MGM thought audiences would accept that singing voice coming out of Joan Crawford's mouth after she had been a star for almost 20 years and shown no singing talent whatsoever.
Crawford actually did sing in some of her earlier films and even made records, but they wanted a big "Broadway" belting sound for the "Torch Song" character.
Yes, I should have been more specific. She actually has a nice singing moment in the 1931 version of Possessed for instance. But, her singing is emphasized in the trailer for Torch Song, and people must have wondered why MGM didn't cast her in a musical before if she had all that vocal talent!
In part, MGM was making big bucks off Joan's soapers and weepies during the worst of the Great Depression. So, I think they kept plugging her into those films with their most bankable male stars like Gable, Montgomery, etc.
Cyd Charisse was the most beautiful , and best dancer in Hollywood... RIP Cyd
Thanks India Aloha from Hawaii
