      I keep 2 in my top tube bag on the inside side pocket. Since it’s on my chest it’s not too hard to change, and there is usually lulls in the race where I can do it quick, maybe takes me 15-20 seconds.

    Great video. You mentioned you use speedplay pedals in gravel races. Speedplay zero? I use speedplay on the road but worried on the gravel they might be problematic? Have you had any problems, particularly if you dismount? Thank you

    • @jgoettl2.0
      @jgoettl2.0  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you!
      Yeah speedplay is owned by Wahoo now and I run the zeros. I’ve had IT band syndrome for a couple years (lots of pt and new program called Pain Academy that I do every day has helped a ton!) but it can still flare up if when I run mtb pedals on my gravel bike as they have way less float. Getting out is a little more difficult than mtb pedals so be careful there and lube the pedals often and before you race.
      I ALLWAYS bring my mtb pedals and shoes to every race in case of wet weather, I will switch to them. If you have to dismount in muddy conditions, you will be in trouble with speedplays!
      But we had multiple dismounts here in dry conditions and I had no issues!

    Nice race, man. It was my first race (Wafer) and I dropped my chain on the start line right as the countdown began 🤣.
    Any tips on riding through the sand? I definitely went OTB when I hit it lmao.

    • @jgoettl2.0
      @jgoettl2.0  11 месяцев назад +1

      Ahh shoot that’s a bad place to drop the chain… this was my first chain drop of the year in a race so I’m still pretty impressed by the Red etap drivetrain, but I think I’ll switch back to a 1x for next season.
      I think with this sand it’s just a matter of practice makes perfect. When I was practicing for some cross races I’d found a couple sand volleyball courts to ride though and made a little course and just lapped it.
      Coming into the sand weight needs to be back a little and kinda got to let the bike do it’s thing and stay loose with the steering. Then the other part is it just takes a lot of power to ride through which can be tough at the end of a long race!
      Hope you still had fun out there and thanks for watching!

      I’ve got a chain catcher on and made it the entire season without a single chain drop on this bike. So just a bit of bad luck here as it went under the catcher. This happened on my road bike which has force etap in it during training and it took a good 10 minutes to get unjammed, so I’m glad this was much easier to fix!

    Well done Joe, I love the video's and commentary, it makes my indoor sessions more enjoyable :) it's nice to see you have a good support crew, it would be cool to get some extra insights into what you eat prior to the race and maybe how you fuel during the race, I don't think there are many secrets left in that field, but it's nice to see good athletes being open about it. Great video, nice to see you moving up. Definitely use a chain guide since this is an on going problem. The thought of riding that well and missing your best result due to a chain drop would make me 🤯.

    • @jgoettl2.0
      @jgoettl2.0  9 месяцев назад

      I actually had a chain guide on and it fell underneath it which is what made it hard to get unjammed. This was my only chain drop in a race of my entire season, poor timing. I’m planning to switch back to 1x next season

    • @stevevarga8621
      @stevevarga8621 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@jgoettl2.0 Wow, that is bad luck. If you switch to single still use a chain guide though. The speeds you go strange things happen.
      Watching you this season I think you’ve made a nice step up. I feel you could have been a bit more aggressive in this race but that’s the thing when you’ve stepped up, you don’t realize it until after the race. That good old 20/20 hindsight always knows.....after. Have a great off season!

    • @jgoettl2.0
      @jgoettl2.0  9 месяцев назад

      @@stevevarga8621 planning on the chain guide for 1x as well! Yeah in hindsight I wish I would have bridged up to daxton off the front at mile 70, but the last few races hadn’t gone well for me (bad day at the rad) and I had gotten dropped at this point last year. So I was being a bit cautious, but I’ll be going for it more this season!

    • @stevevarga8621
      @stevevarga8621 9 месяцев назад

      I could see that in the video. You had no problem staying with the group but your head was all about last year’s race. That is a very normal reaction. Everybody does that. Now with a higher level of confidence you may be willing to take some more chances. Very very often it’s the guy who takes the chances that wins. I feel like that’s the typical winning scenario now.
