- I'm so happy to know that women's baseball was a thing! I did read up on it a bit after watching the movie, and the movie was quite dramatized, but it was still a fun movie and I'm glad that it exists. Enjoy!

I never got the hype for the scene.

I love how in the Hall of Fame scene, they gave Stillwell a bit of an arc. During the actual baseball season, he was a little kid and didn’t understand the importance of the league and didn’t take it seriously. By the time of the Hall of Fame induction, he was grown up and respected the importance of the league to the players to the point where he attended the events on behalf of his mother.
A long long time ago, like in the summer of 1996, I travelled from Europe to Cooperstown to visit the HoF. We actually met some of the former Racine players and had a chat with them. Special ladies. Honored to have met them.

Hey! It's my favorite movie reactor! Yes, this is an excellent film about the Professional Women's League during WWII. In those scenes during the credits, they show real footage of some of the players in the reunion game. They are also shown mixed in with the actors who played the older characters during the dedication ceremony. RIP Penny Marshall the director. Penny was on a hit T.V. show back in the 70's and played Laverne on "Laverne And Shirley". Her dad, Gary Marshall, was a famous director/producer and he got to be in this film. He played the owner Mr. Harvey.
If you want to see another moving film she directed, I recommend "Awakenings" (1990) with Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro.

they formed the league because of WWII so many men went to war, to keep baseball going. Just like so many women went to work in factories while the war was on, before that it would never be considered a thing. From our town it was the Kalamazoo Lassies, from what I understood, my grandpa was big fan ( I think of the outfits), but he went to many of their games.
It was fun to watch a reaction from someone who obviously understands the game. Thank you for sharing this moment with us!

I have seen that one. I remember loving the honesty.
Fun story... I first saw this movie in juvenile hall back in 1996. I remember we never finished the movie probably bc we had to return to our cells or something and then popped in another movie the next day. When I got released (a few months later) one of the 1st things I did was go to blockbuster to rent ALofTO and Armageddon, another movie they played and never finished. This is like cruel and unusual punishment. Happy to say that I did finish the movie and is 1 of my favorite guilty pleasure movies, the VHS tape I tell my friends that it's an ex gf's or it's a tape I use to record games (obviously b4 DVR).

You should check out another Penny Marshall film "Big" (1988).

Penny Marshall who directed was a true visionary with this film and wanted the actors to look like they've played. Despite being one of the most pleasant directors the one thing she was adamant and put her foot dowm about was the actors completing vigorous baseball training. She also used lots of the older women who were actual members in the final sequence. Older Alice (the one who was superstitious with the socks and later told Dottie it was good luck to have her) in particular was a real player, one of the best in the league actually.
She noted that they weren't allowed to integrate in the 40s So the scene where the black woman throws back the foul was a nod to the times and to show they deserved to play. In real life there were two African American women who wanted to play but we're turned away but eventually did along side men in the Negro league. There's so much history and not enough time or space here. Take a look it's truly inspiring.
As far a recommendation, I know I'm four months late but another good Penny Marshall movie is Awakenings and Riding in cars with boys
Abby Jacobson (Broad City, Disenchantment) is working on a streaming series based "A League Of Their Own" for Amazon Prime. So that'll be a chance to explore more of the storyline of the women's baseball league.

My friend's mother was a Racine Belle and she loved this movie. Obviously there was a lot of stuff made up to make the story more entertaining but she said it captured the feel of the time and the League very well. Many were married to servicemen so there always was the fear of those awful telegrams but she started dating her husband after he came back so didn't have to deal with that.
that's amazing that you knew someone who played in the league. Keep the stories she might have shared, pass them down, too much of real history is lost because younger generations fail to take interest.
Speaking of American history look up "Good luck and Good night", a powerhouse performance by David Strathairn as Fred F Murrow.

fun fact, the older dottie, is NOT Geena Davis in makeup! Just her voice dubbing! I watched this movie several time (its possibly my fave ever) before I knew that. It is actually an actress named, Lynn Cartwright.

I cry my eyes out every time I watch this movie and TOTALLY embarrassed my husband when we went to Cooperstown and I got to see the area dedicated to the AAGPBL
As a Baseball fan I have watched almost every movie about the game that are based on true events or stories and this film ranks way up there for me. A few of my favorites are "Bang the Drum Slowly", "The Stratton Story" and "Fear Strikes Out".
I played softball my whole life and I love baseball too so this movie is one of my all time favorites. It shows how far Women’s sports has come. I have so much respect for the women of the AAGPBL and what they had to put up with to open doors for the rest of us.
It’s crazy that it still wasn’t until 40 yrs after this that we finally had NCAA division I,II, and III softball World Series.
The Chaperones were there to make the Ladies stay Ladies and they took care of their skinned-up legs. Couldn't have males taking care of them. Quite an interesting piece of history. That was the older Lady that Tom Hanks kissed.
Some of the actual members were playing at the end.
Another film, bend it like Beckham. A girl who wants to play football (soccer) stars Kiera Knightly, she was in pirates of the Caribbean.

I hate how whenever I've seen this on television......they chop off that sequence at the end, when Madonna's singing over the end credits. From what I remember......there's footage of the REAL ladies playing.
You can't love baseball and not love this movie. This is one of my top 3 baseball movies. It's real. Nice reaction.
Great reaction video. Interesting to hear from someone who played at one point. The sexist crap they were subjected to was ridiculous, but they were great players anyway. They should definitely still be playing.
Not in defense of the sexist crap, but, it was a part of the times. Not just on the Male side of things either. A great deal of women at that time were content with their role in the world. If anything I think WWII actually spurred women to be more independent and start branching out (incidentally part of the message of this movie).
Madonna was great in that movie. But my favorite movies with her are "Body of Evidence", "Dangerous Game" and "Dick Tracy".

Since you mention in this video you're such a fan, and player, of baseball, I would suggest the 1976 movie Bad News Bears. It's about a little league team (of boys), and it's a comedy/drama like A League of Their Own.
K so up until the mid 50s It was illegal for a woman to wear pants or for man to wear a dress. The skirts were adhearing to the law but also to the morality of the day, women play sports was bad enough, but putting them in pants??? No no no far too radical for the sensitive morality of the 1940s (sound familiar).
The law was changed for women but the court of public opinion still made it unsavoury for women to wear pants. The same restrictive clothing laws are what ended up inciting the stonewall riots, because these laws were still in place until the late 1970s.
I think you would like the Terry Gillium film, Brazil. It isn't about Brazil, the country. It is a dystopian comedy-drama that is truly visionary and creative. You might be more familiar with Terry's film, Time Bandits, or maybe not. Anyway, it has Jonathan Pryce and Robert Deniro in it and I think you would like it a lot. I would love to see you react to it.

All those beauty classes, In reality it's that in pretty much anything that's entertainment or visual mediums, appearances are important and it's actually thought in school and journalism. Cause humans are simple creatures and we are attracted to beauty and they used that for women's league to attract men's audience. And even women. Say you cruise around channels on TV, your eye will catch something that is attractive. In journalism they say you lure them with beauty and you keep them with content. But you still have to have beauty cause people won't show up. Gina Corano was a key in making women in UFC a thing cause she was good but also very attractive.
I still want to hate it because it has nothing to do with baseball, but I can't because that explanation is 1000% accurate and I do it too. It's even like meeting a person. You're drawn in by their looks and stay for who they are.
@@BelleLifeisinBloom I must admit, that's how I discovered your channel after all, I was looking for a reaction for a movie and your charm lured me here somehow. ah ha There was a joke in Seinfeld that said "Have you noticed you never see attractive homeless people?". But in the case of this women's league, what is cool is that attraction may have lured audience but if they sucked they would have left but these women were pretty good so they managed to keep the audience.

Fun fact about the real league: One of the Racine players was Sophie Kurys, who was the greatest base stealer in professional baseball. Her 201 stolen bases in 1946 (out of 203 attempts) is still an all-time record. Her career total of 1,114 stolen bases has only ever been surpassed once, by Rickey Henderson in 1994 - and it took him nearly 16 seasons to beat a record she set in just over 8.

Laverne and Shirley star, Penny Marshall directed this movie. She directed a few other films. I love Tom Hanks and Geena Davis in this.

I keep underestimating this movie - I mean I kind of overlook it because it's funny and popular, but I forget how poignant it is at times. That scene with the telegram arriving at the locker room...man, I CANNOT watch that without tearing up. And I love the end, when we see Dottie and everyone in present day. Also, did you watch the end credits? We see real life former members of the WOMEN'S League playing (at least I THINK they are real former members...they certainly look like they know how to play baseball). It's great to see those "old ladies" playing a game they love!

@@BelleLifeisinBloom I really enjoy older movies. Most are so much more cleverly written than the modern, car chase, special effect, action film. Those can be entertaining as well but Hollywood has lost most of its penchant for nuance, style, suspense, character development, and plot driven narrative. Sorry the list was so long. I had more but didn’t realize how many I had suggested at once. They’re all great films. You’re doing a wonderful job at making reviews that are interesting to watch. 😁
@@juggernautomnimedia1038 I am a fan of action movies. It's probably my favorite genre. That and Disney. So a lot of the bigger films from this century I really enjoy. But I do want to broaden my movie horizons. I think I need to be more engaged with other types of movies instead of looking for entertainment. I just thought of that. I usually do not get into my personal favorite films but since you are looking for films you would not be exposed to in today’s market, I will offer two more. The Remains Of The Day is a fantastic period piece with one of the most heartbreaking endings I have ever seen. I can not recommend it enough. It stars Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. The second is my favorite movie of all time. It is a character driven thriller called Sleuth from 1975. Careful not to confuse it with the modern remake which was dreadful. sleuth stars Michael Caine and Sir Lawrence Olivier. I love both of these films and cannot say enough good things about them. But since they have drifted into the ambiguity of time, you probably would never hear about them in any other format. Perhaps one rainy afternoon when you are feeling daring, you’ll consider giving one or both a watch. Even if you don’t love them, they are certainly amazing acting performances worth experiencing. 😀

Love this film. There is a new League of Their Own Amazon series that is currently being made. I would also recommend films like Thelma and Louise, Pleasantville, Milk (2008), Fried Green Tomatoes, Dark City, Running on Empty, The Natural, A River Runs Through It, and Dangerous Liaisons if you haven't seen them.

Nice list of recommendations; not many people do those. I love _Thelma and Louise,_ but you should be in the mood for a serious drama when you watch it. _Pleasantville_ and _Fried Green Tomatoes_ are a lot of fun, and frequently overlooked. Did you ever see a film called _Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day_ with Frances McDormand and Amy Adams?That's another one that's just _good,_ but nobody seems to know about it.
With _The Natural,_ I like the film quite a bit, but have you ever read the book? It's ... surprising. I understand the author, Bernard Malamud, always hated the movie because he said he couldn't even recognize his Roy Hobbs. Having read the book, I believe that. Movie Hobbs is a flawed hero, but it's Robert Redford; he's hard to dislike. Book Hobbs is very much an anti-hero; it really changes the outcome of the story. I hadn't thought about that changed adaptation in a while - wow!
Tom Hanks always gives his all whatever character he plays.
Geena Davis is an actual athlete in the world of archery. At one time, she was good enough to go to the Olympics.
The guy who asks Tom Hanks character to manage the team is played by Penny Marshall husband Gary.

Sliding in the skirts would have been extra hard back then because baseball diamonds weren't as well maintained as they are today. great reaction. Tom Hanks was money in this, and my personal favorite was the scout at the beginning played by the great Jon Lovitz.
If you get the chance locate a copy of the anniversary edition dvd. It gives a great insight on what it took to make this movie plus Penny’s passion to make this movie. One spoiler, just about every female actress in Hollywood auditioned for this movie.

I watched this film as a Madonna fan, she was cute in it and I love the emotional title track sung by her.
I call women girls sometimes unless they don't want me to. It's not meant to be denigrating. I just never got used to using men and women. It sounds so proper and impersonal. I say guy, boy, or dude for males as well. I hate being referred to as a man.

During that time being called girls was prefered . The word women tended to be older . With the newer generations the langusge gets more offensive to people. Just like being called mam offended women that felt the word ment older woman. And how nowadays women call each other bitches , wich would be very rude in the 1940's .so at that time they liked being one of the girls and not an old woman.

Always been a huge fan of this movie since it came out in 1992. Just watched it again for the umpteenth time today, and that telegram scene chokes me up EVERY time! That and the end of the last game. I feel like Dottie did--happy for Kit but sad for the Peaches.

I know what you mean, I haven't done certain hobbies in more than half my life ago. Time is strange, and boy does it fly by.
Gotta remember this is the 1940's. Men AND Women Had different ideas about gender roles.
There's nothing wrong with calling Women "Girls" just as there is nothing wrong with calling Men "Boys". Even to this day in a lot of sports, boys is used instead of men. Not every time but here and there. Watch Wrestling and hear one talk about "The Boys in the back" and so forth. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell made a great pair of friends in this movie. Do you know the song "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"? by Cindi Lauper? She's not talking about just little kids. LOL If you felt like smacking the hell out of the telegram guy, know that you're not alone. I don't think there's a person who saw this movie didn't want to knock him upside the head a few times. He should have made sure everything was ready to go and had been soft and tender when giving the worse news you can give someone..... Now question is, did she drop the ball or let the ball go? Answer, depends on your personal view as both answers have a following. I personally think she let it go to let her sister be the hero of her team but did it in a way that looked like she just lost ahold of it.

One of the only two sports movies I can get behind. The other is Girlfight, starring Michelle Rodriguez. Generally speaking I'm entirely unable to care who wins, and I can't get past the predictable underdog-coming-from-behind-to-win-the-championship-in-the-last-4-seconds formula. Sport is stupid and pontless, straightforwardly. But this film is moving and impressive, partly because the formula isn't applied, and no-one in particular wins, which is how life is.
The one thing that annoys me is Kit bashing on her sister. The baby whining and complaining. Try being the middle child! Then you can unload!
