There are only two films that I acknowledge Nicolas Cage as a great actor: The Weather Man & Lord of War. His lack of facial expression and stiffness fits in a tragic-black comedy drama. He should opt for those themes since thats his elements.
I love to pretend that this movie and Training Day are in the same universe. Like Ethan Hawks character in that movie is really the same guy in this movie to. After learning what he did in L.A. from Denzel, he eventually made his way over seas to try and catch arms dealers, naturally changing his name to protect himself and his family. His name in Training Day is Jake, and in Lord of War it’s Jack, plus their characters are very similar and feels like a natural progression of his arc from film to film.
Beside, do never hate a gun... By aiming your hate and blame at an object, you take guilt of those who pull the trigger. But it's easier obviously to hate an object then to hate a person that stands behind it. In case of guns it's very literal.
