Great video, now how to do this with chords...the way one guitar player plays a power chord per say is different from the next guy, even worst using different tunings....this has been a pain of my being and my biggest fear and insecurity...hope you can help
Distorted chords tend to be hard to hear for me....especially since theres many combinations/mutationa
@@xosemusic The process is exactly the same, it's just harder. Take it one note at a time in the chord, find all the pitches that are present, and try them in different octaves if it doesn't sound quite right, but also remember that the person who played it is also a guitarist who wouldn't do something that can't be played, so you're probably overthinking it
I can totally relate to this. This is exactly how I learn songs. I need to get one of those pedals.
Learning something by ear is sooo rewarding. There is zero wasted time in transcribing: you become a better musician and you learn the lick/song/riff you wanted to in the process.
It’s also a totally addictive power haha I’m like I CAN SEE THROUGH AEONS AND HEAR THE CREATION OF GALAXIES and then I’m using it to learn cat food commercial jingles because I can’t turn it off
I’m an “old man” learning second by second and this is exactly what I needed and have been looking for. I just ordered my Vidami pedal and can’t wait to get it! Thanks!
Hope you dig it!
I'm an "old man" now, but I first started learning The Beatles by ear and graduated to Black Sabbath and even some Megadeath and Metallica.
It's not hard. The bass player will tell you the root of the chord and the rest just follows suit.
The hard part is actually playing consistent rhythm guitar.
I was watching Rick Beato’s top 10 pop songs video, and he’s calling out the chord progressions. My mind was blown. I really need to listen to songs and learn how to do that.
You won’t regret it, although you can’t turn it off once you start haha
Learning songs by ear reason number 1: fun challenge.
I used to be afraid of approaching songs by ear, but about a year ago I finally transcribed an entire song by ear and now I have way more confidence.
I’m sure that pedal would be helpful as well. Haha
Says: I'm gonna show you how to learn by ear!
Does: Start a video
This is indeed a good advice for young player...but I would definatly skip the video part and just focus on the actual ear trainning. Intervals is also a key point in ear trainning... You have to learn how notes rings with each other.
EAR GODS
I definately needed this. Ive hit a road block and took a break for awhile. But this reminded me to be patient and inspired me to learn a skill i didn't have before. Thanks man!
I definitely can't do this but I always advise young guitar players to learn songs by listening to them.
I've only been playing an acoustic, somehow I managed to learn some riffs by ear (mostly clean ones) so this vid is very helpful. Thx Trey
most helpful video ive ever seen in my life for learning guitar tysm
This is officially my new favorite video you've put out. Thank you!
Great video! Cool tutorial and the tips are really relevant. :)
been doing this since i was 13.. rewind, pause, play , im 33.. i thank my late dad for teaching his stubborn son who does not know to read notes & taught me how to use my ears, and thanks gear gods for putting this out!
Holy hell Trey! This is like THE video I’ve been needing to see. I keep forgetting about the tools built into youtube and how helpful it can be for things like this. In general i need more patience with my own self and abilities. I get frustrated with how fast i can nail something with my voice but it’ll take forever to find the notes on guitar, piano, midi score, etc. sometimes it’s easier than others, but i gotta start investing time into it. Thanks for this video man \m/
Very cool! I'm definitely buying the Vidami. Amazing!
Awesome, that link in the description will get you 10% off if you like
HELPED A TON THX
Have you ever learned a song by ear? How did you do it?
i'm listening and i try to play it . Play , rewind , play ,rewind ...
I learned the acoustic guitar part that happens during the breakdown of Dread Machine by listening to it slowly and trying to play it back over and over again, this pedal seems like it would have made that process a lot faster.
Never a song, but certain solos.
It was a punk album. Explode by The Unseen. Once i established the usual chord progressions i got most of it. This was about 2 years into my guitar playing.
I started this way in 97 with punk rock, and I approve of this message! After only 3 months I started creating riffs. Now I'm into Inferi and stuff like that so... I do love the tabs haha
killer lesson and that tone is jaw dropping
Dude, this is awesome. Thanks!! I’ve been working on Breath by Intervals this way, and you just helped me so damn much!
Ever since I learned about scales, I was just instantly able to learn any riff I wanted by ear, because I could just work out where each note fell within the context of the scale
Great video! I was kind of doing something like this but not in a professional way like this, it will definitely help me to improve.
Great suggestions as always! You are definitely one of the cool kids!!
Gear Gods Rule.. thanks for the helpful hints Trey!
This is the most important RUclips video I have ever watched. All the ideas were already circulating in my head for six months at least, but I needed someone to say: this is the way you should be doing it.
Huge thank you from me.
That’s high praise! Happy to be of help
Nice stream last night dude! \m/
I am a self tought guitarist and tabs played a major role in teaching me my first skills. Learning by ear comes automatically with time. Tabs, in my humble opinion, are the perfect gateway tool for any new guitarist.
Yeah I taught guitar for a long time and I would have been screwed without tabs to teach with, but they’re like training wheels, gotta drop them eventually!
@@treyxaviermusic Absolutely true! Greetings from Germany😎🤘🏻
Super power!
You the real MVP for dropping this video Trey lol
This is the content i subbed for! You forgot one thing, doing what you just taught is fun… it is supposed to be fun cause you actually feel like a musician not a parrot. If you’re not having fun, don’t take yourself too seriously. Thanks TX this is motivation to keep trying. Would love to see a series like this.
Always gotta have fun!
Thank actually a ton for this. I'm a beginner player still I've played for about a year but always have just based everything I've learned off tabs but honestly do t remember much that I've played but I'm definitely gonna give this a try and I think this will seriously help me be able to learn better and be able to remember things. I play piano and this is basicay how I would learn but combining it with the sheet music where I'd hear it to hear exactly how they will play it and compare it to the sheet music to now what notes but doing that has helped train my ear to learn where on the piano a note is by just hearing it. But this I never really thought about doing so thank you so much I'm gonna try this and will see how things go. Taking it slow will be hard because I'm honestly not super patient sometimes but definitely will try and learn to be more patient
I’m an incredibly impatient person, it took a long time to be able to sit and do this sort of thing, so I feel you
I can tell this song is going to be stuck in my head all day 😂
All the tips about learning songs by ear : "Yeah just play the same note he is playing"
Well thanks but thats litteraly what I cant do. I dont have good ears, I cant say "Ok thats the right note" so I will never get the right melody... Back to tabs then D:
It’s kinda cheating cause you’re watching him play it as well. It’s not a “by ear” example.
2 Wheel Addiction indeed but if you don't see what he is playing you might end up playing it in the wrong position
Yeah the eye is supporting the ear very much here
Just because you hear it, and determine, "Note 1 is an A4" (as an example) doesn't mean you're playing A4 in the right spot.
Do you have any advice for parts that are buried in the mix? Like, you know, learning any bass part for ..And Justice For All for example.
Just thinking 💭 about that n u just post it u make my day bro 💕🇳🇵🤗🤗
Upload more mores videos
I was taught to learn by ear and tabs are often WRONG AF so learning to make my own so at least I could blame myself for mistakes. I hear lyrics wrong but I get the notes right 😂 or close anyway
Someone wants told me you should be able to sing the notes that you’re playing. he noodled for a while singing in key ... I did a pinch harmonic and whammy divebomb sing that gumba! 😂he tried 🤘🏽 just keep trying till you get it, like driving a manual it just becomes natural 🤘🏽
@@PooNinja lol
@@PooNinja thats awesome
Sir please make a comparison video of boss gt-100 and line 6 pod go
Very interesting. Funny how im sure a lot of us use some of these techniques and don't even realize how common or helpful it could be for others
Where can I download the tab for this? 😆
That's a really cool idea for a pedal! Unfortunately, I'm trying to learn a lot of obscure video game soundtracks, and there generally aren't videos so I can see what note they're playing on their instruments. I have been singing and looping, which does help, but it is still tough sometimes. Especially when there's a buttload of instruments to transcribe.
Even if it’s a video that’s just the song and the album cover or something this thing will help. The process is the same, having a video of someone playing it makes it easier but it isn’t a dealbreaker
Yooo my cries have been heard🙏🙏🙏
If the song is mostly power chords I can do ok, but I've never tried breaking down a solo yet. I do watch live video to make shore the tabs are close.
Singing the notes, the lennie Tristano method?
Hey trey, do you have any tricks for figuring out what tuning someone is using? That has always tripped me up when trying to learn something by ear and it ends up being in an alternate tuning. (Sorry if this is covered in the video, I'm still watching it)
Just listen for the lowest note, once you get it tune your lowest string to it (sing it if you have to or use a piano to check the exact notes) it doesn’t matter if you use it as a drop tuning or not that all depends on your preferences because you’re the one writing the song out
Or just google it if you can’t find out the tuning but that should be a last resort (same goes with key tempo and rhythm)
@@Nick-me1ms thanks dude, I'll try that. There has been one particular song from the DUSK soundtrack (a video game) that I've wanted to learn but haven't figured out the tuning on - and because it's kind of a niche thing I haven't seen anyone transcribe or document anything about any of the songs on that OST. I've even tweeted multiple times at the guy who wrote it just asking him what tunings he used but never got a response, lol
Also, I just realized I have a drop pedal, and using that would make doing this really easy.
I don’t really have any specific tricks, but as you do it more and more it will start to be easier to see that certain things only work in certain tunings and some things sound a certain way.
@@treyxaviermusic makes sense, thanks dude you rock and also roll!
Good ol' oldskul way😀 ... Back in the day when there's no ultimate guitars 😂
Yo, bro, definitely check out uncle Judy's videos where he learns polyphia songs by ear. They are amazing!
vidami pedal is so 😎 Its so annoying to have to free up your hands...I use to have to deal with a shoe box tape recorder 🤣
I really struggle with finding the notes even whilst I'm singing them, your fingers just seemed to go straight there. Eg. Did they go up or down notes? Was it the same string or a different one? Etc. People go on about interval training but how do I do that? And what about complex chords? It sucks because I'm a capable long time player but so stuck with learning just from tabs
It’s just a TON of trial and error. Keep singing the note and trying different ones, you’ll start to get better at it as you go. Chords are harder but it’s the same thing just with stacks of notes, you just have to find more notes.
i use both, especially if im learning something different than the tuning im in.(y'know, for fun?)
I can learn some songs by ear but if its more technical and fast paced of a song its easier to look at tutorial
I can figure out rhythm sections like this - I figure out one note to find the root note/chord, then can figure out the rest of the rhythms. As for leads, literally all this.
Can figure out the leads and maybe write a tab on guitar pro for reference. Playing those leads is an entirely different story though lol.
Ear training helps L O T S
We need that metal zone shirt
cute and cool! 🏆🏆🏆
Reminds me of the video of Trey learning Jason Richardsons solo in "Aviator" 😂
Except this one I eventually got haha
@@treyxaviermusic no problem. I got up the to the dips and i tapped out. Only about 65% speed lol
It doesnt't look like it...but that's the best tutorial on the internet. Thank you also for the insights on the process
Helix does it too.
Awesome video, but this isn’t learning by ear. You’ve got a visual aid. Like sheet music or tabs. Gotta find something on Spotify and then try it.
The process is the same either way, just helps to have a visual if you can get it
@@treyxaviermusic it helps a lot though, I dont think you'll answer, but the trouble I'm having is especially with chords or when multiple strings are played, say in a vinyl or a CD where I can't really see them playing, anyone got any tips ?
So this video title really is: learning a song by ear by watching a video ....? The video is good for some people no doubt but i was hoping to actually get tips on learning strictly by ear, not by just watching someone play it. Also that pedal is really cool!!!
The process is exactly the same if you have just a track, the video just makes it easier
@@treyxaviermusic True, but when there's no video it's a lot harder cause a note can be played in multiple spots among other things. I'd hate to try and learn something like a BTBAM or Necrophagist song by hear lol. I don't see how people do it. Im betting knowing music theory helps a lot.
Can’t learn songs using tabs because no one makes tabs for the bands i listen to.
Horrible at learning by ear though lol. Always think I’m close until someone does a cover of the song and I find that I’m not even really close
It just takes a lot of doing it over and over, don’t be afraid of getting it wrong - do it anyway, you’ll get closer each time
No fair... you can see what he's playing. I call shenanigans. LoL.
I remember the first song I ever learned by ear was The Ocean by Led Zeppelin
why does this channel get less than 10000 views on most videos if the content is great and has almost 200000 subs?
I wish I knew hahaha
musical archaeologists lmfaooooo
Me I try to learn a Infant annihilator song when I'm berly able to play a full rammstein song lol
Trying to learn Necrophagist by ear
Incredibly annoying every time I read someone write:
"Can I have the tabs for that song?"
Especially when that song only has four chords and they're actually showing in the video how it's played.
Basically it's a keyboard for your foot
What do you do if your singing makes two cats fighting sound tuneful?
Doesn’t matter, presumably you’re doing this where no one can see or hear you because no part of it is fun to watch or listen to hahaha
Sounds like he's playing something he practiced a million times when he was learning.. may seem spur of the moment but I bet he does these exercises so much it's just second nature to him
Lol, that's an expensive foot keyboard 🤣
Because of the thumbnail, i thought that you were to show how to learn to read with actual guitar sheet music
That’s a video that no one would watch hahaha
Scuffed cuz you literally had a video showing hand positioning so immediately know the fret/capo placement or settings played.
idek how to play to a metronome😭
Yay I’m First

@@yashdaware2458 Mitochondria is the power house of the cell
Titles the video "Learn By Ear", then proceeds not to do that.
im pretty sure this technique wont work once id start to learn a polyphia song!!
Works for anything, Polyphia, Beethoven, Cardi B, you name it. Some things will be harder than others but it’s all the same 12 notes
this have no real sense
Mans teaching how to learn by ear but actually from a video of the guitar player playing it. You teach us how to play by eye not ear bud. Lmao
Reason #1: Because your singer/guitarist just sends you mediocre demos and sloppy iPhone videos for the songs he wrote :P
