It was literally the first troll I thought of. Although I was surprised to see it at number 1. I would’ve thought that would be the number 2 card because it’s older.
@@m.s.3121 it makes sense when you realize that Troll of of Khazad Dhum is effectively a tapland. A ton of modern and legacy decks run it, since it basically free for many decks. And in pauper it is a lot more free since taplands are more common and the format is slower.
@ makes totally sense and I feel like lord of the rings has some of the most broken cards, with orcish bowmasters, the one ring, troll of khazad dhum. that set is so packed.
Man, I feel you on Troll Ascetic. I started playing the game in earnest around 8th edition and I had no clue how to beat it. that, or the senior at my school who was playing upheval and Psychatog. My jaw hit the floor when I came back to magic around 2014 and saw Asceticism.
It's not in this list, but the Sedge Troll/Hedge Troll is my favorite of all the trolls just for being a very good parallel of mechanical, art and story flavor. A bit of a shame the space for those little short stories is so low when cards have to do so much these days.
Ahhh Trolls, a card type I have never used. I honestly expected Golgari Grave Troll to be #1, but instead the absurdly stacked Lord of the Rings set won out yet again. I wonder if any of the cards from that set would make it onto "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)".
To be fair it's really likely that golgari grave troll isn't number 1 because it's banned in modern and legacy. It's undoubtedly more busted than the lotr troll lol.
Grave troll is banned basically anywhere relevant and that's after being unbanned a few times just to see if the cards surrounding it had become broken enough to keep it unbanned. Until now, the troll has always been too powerful to remain. Hell, as people happily point out, if the troll was a sorcery that said "B, dredge 6, you lose the game" people would still play it.
1st place made me realize that one day in the not too distant future the tops of these lists are going to be filled with UB trash and not classic magic cards :(
I like to think they'll be a mix of old in-Universe all-star cards, like Golgari Grave Troll, and cool, well-designed and elegant new UB cards, like Troll of Khazad-dûm.
Feasting Troll King sounds like a good fit for that Scarstripe Sacrifice deck you mentioned before. Are they played together? It says FTK hasn't gotten any points last year, but Scarstripe has.
It's always fun when the top card of a list that can draw from all the history of the game is basically the newest card on said list, and this one can't even draw value from any run through Standard, for instance.😊 I do still miss Regeneration, sometimes.
Regeneration is still used sometimes in pauper Commander, where a bunch of old common enchantments and instants are some of your only protection options in certain colors. And in regular Commander if you're old like me and use it for fun.
Technically, the top troll has a degree of resilience, but not against magic (instants, sorceries, PWs, enchantments, any targeting basically). However it is hard to block and thus hard to kill in combat. It's very minor and honestly, this thing seems like it could've had more toughness and/or power since it was so menacing
Not sure if this is specifically why but that would change how multicolor cards hit it. For example, BG Assassin's Trophy can hit it now but wouldn't if it had Hexproof from non-green
They thought it was too complicated, and I kind of get it -- except that they've effectively brought the ability back and made it more complicated, since now creatures have a very similar ability where they get temporary indestructibility and tap themselves.
@@NizzahonMagic Until I started using them, it was very difficult for me to understand how powerful this cycle was... well, other than Eagles. I play a lot of Duel Commander (which plays more like Legacy Cube than regular Commander). In addition to my multicolor decks, I have mono-color decks for all except Blue. The ONLY card in this cycle I have never run in a single deck is Eagles.
@@crawdaddy1234 even without pauper points, ToKD would have come VERY close to Golgari Grave Troll's points, and given just how heavily it's played in legacy, it would pass Golgari Grave Troll just on that format alone.
08:50 I'm pessimistic on this. Thrun is weak to edict effects and gets outraced by things like Abhorrent Oculus, especially under consideration of Unearth.
It's somewhat sad that more recent cards almost always come on top of old-time classics. It would be nice some time to engineer a top 10 such that old cards are better than new ones. 😊 (Though you may point out that's the case when you do top 10 most expensive cards... 🤔).
My fave card texts: cannot be countered and hexproof, playing a lot of arena brawl I got me thrunn breaker of silence as my mono green commander, play as many creatures with hexproof as I can and just *chefs kiss* best way to play when that format's rampant kill spells and counter spells get too annoying and you just wanna play the game. Thrunn was a godsend when Rusko clockmaker decks were the meta commander for a minute.
I really thought Grave Troll would be number 1! Instead it's position is USURPED by this, most would call, "lame" beat-stick? Actually, with that Swampcycling skill, they probubly would work really well together.
1) Johnny Somali 2) Fidias Pa--- Oh! You mean MtG trolls... not content or internet trolls... ... oops Edit: also, during Urza's Saga era, 4 mana for 3/3 creatures with an upside was the standard. I got a set of it... and give it equipment like Loxodon Warhammer... it makes short work of my opponent >:3 Edit 2: Geezuz HOW did you read Asmo's name without stuttering?? 😮
Been thinking a lot about Thrun lately and how the newer one kind of takes 2 steps back from the anti-control pillar that The Last Troll was. "Almost-hexproof" just feels out of place, and the inability to protect itself during your opponent's turn (aka the time it's most likely to die via sweeper) feels like an astronomical miss. All while costing more mana. Idk it just feels to me like it doesn't occupy the same niche that The Last Troll did, so options like Shifting Ceratops and Balustrade Wurm feel like better sideboard choices.
A top 10 list of a creature type that almost exclusively exists in green? Of course the top spot is a non-green card and it being played has nothing to do with what it does as a creature! The state of the "creature color" is just sad...
I don't think it's true that Troll of Khazad-dum being good has nothing to do with being a creature -- it's a legit reanimation target. And true, it wouldn't be nearly as good without landcycling, but the fact it effectively can't be blocked in the early game does make it a must-kill threat when someone casts Reanimate on turn 1.
"Trolls are SUPER hard to kill!"
No truer words were spoken as a content creator. Social media was a mistake.
Sounding a bit better Nizzahon. Glad you are back!
Troll Ascetic is so iconic that we called hexproof “troll shroud” before it was keyworded (such as on Slippery Bogle)
This is the first time ever in the history of this channel that I didn't even know #1 existed!
same and such a new card overtaking already all the others is wild.

The top troll in MTG is whoever designed Goblin Game.
Golgari Grave Troll?
Edit:
Ha, to think the one troll without some kind of resiliency would be number 1.
Nothing like the beautiful combination of land tutoring and super menace
Cool video! I wish that trolls were a more established tribe in magic the same way elves and goblins are
Theres a typo on Alpha Uthden Troll. The flavor text is attributed to "Traditional". By 4th Ed. it was updated to "Troll Chant"
Your mom’s flavor text was updated to “Troll Chant.” 😂

Sorry, sometimes I just need to say a nonsensical “Your mom” joke.
Top 10 Basic Lands please
Why?
That would be a funny April 1st episode

Fun video series idea for you how about a series of videos that cover each year of MTG showing how the game has evolved over time
play thrun the last troll with:
pariah
pariahs shield
stuffy doll

Uncounterable is a pretty big deal. Although cards like subtlety may eventually change that in the long run.

There's plenty on BG trolls and that's where the fit with regenerate/graveyard feel, a few pure black ones is hardly a stretch.
