But in the Wii U commercials, they didn’t show what the Gamepad was capable of doing in a sufficient way. They only showed it off as a “newer” Wii console that can have you play without having to use a TV, and later confusing people that the Wii U was an accessory for the Wii, and not as a whole console. With how bad the Wii U sold, all Nintendo did later was trying so hard to persuade to people that the Wii U was an entirely brand new console, and not showing how capable the console was at being powerful and fun (for example, those AWFUL kid commercials, where the kids were like: “wE aLrEaDy hAvE a wIi sWeEtIe!!”). Not to mention, Nintendo kind of marketed the Wii U as a console that was exclusively just for kids… there was a lack of diverse among those commercials, where the adults and teens can also have fun with it, like here. At least they learned their lesson with the Switch.
I’ve been listening to Reggie’s book “Disrupting the Game” and he mentions how Nintendo of Japan did NOT like this ad campaign and were totally against it (thought the Japanese businessmen were acting far too familiar with strangers). Reggie pushed hard for it and that’s why we have it today. Good thing because they are excellent and memorable commercials.

If Nintendo were to remake this commercial, show off Wii U's great titles and change the catchphrase to "U would like to play" or "Would U like to play" then the Wii U would definitely be giving the Xbox One and PS4 a run for their money.

If Nintendo did the Marketing campaign for the Wii U I could see the tagline being "Wii would like to play with U"

I remember being 15 and watching this video over and over, desperately wanting a Wii back in '06. Me and two of my friends all wanted consoles for Christmas. I wanted the Wii, one of them a Xbox 360 and the other a PS3, we ended up getting them and then we would constantly argue about witch one was the best, and having game nights... One weekend we were at the PS3 guys house playing that, next we played the 360 and next the Wii and then it started all over... Drinking copious amounts of Coke and Red Bull... Then in the middle of the night when we wanted a break from the gaming we usually went outside and did stupid stuff around the block like blowing up mailboxes, set stuff on fire or fuck up our schoolyard... Nostalgia really hits me sometimes...
Back then: HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS OH MY- HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME! 1 year later: *Sitting on couch, barely flailing the controller in random directions*
The Wii was when Nintendo grabbed a gun, aimed at sony's face and said "Don't F__K with us, and DON'T think of copying us with this". Then it came and destroyed the 360 and the PS3, then PS3 copyed Wii with PS Move.
Stuff like this make me glad to own a Wii AND Wii U in 2021. I'm now 14, and looking back at this stuff is so nostalgic. The Wii and Wii U are the only consoles I have, and will continue to play.

People keep on dissing the Wii. There are some suckish games on it, but there are also some AWESOME games on it, such as Zelda TP, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime, New Super Mario Bros, and the best of tham all, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. And let's not forget the virtual console and all the awesome games on there.

I remember when these commercials used to play. I always wondered what happened to these guys and the good old Wii animation until I found out a few years ago.
Probably my favorite commercial ever, even if it was mostly lies. The song still rocks.

People keep on dissing the Wii. There are some suckish games on it, but there are also some AWESOME games on it, such as Zelda TP, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime, New Super Mario Bros, and the best of tham all, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
And let's not forget the virtual console and all the awesome games on there.

In my opinion, the best TV commercial for any console. Very few words, and they say soooo much. :-)
the wii u need a commercial like this and maybe this can boost their sales BUT they someway to say THIS IS A WII U,NOT A WII so some people can say ''OH THAT TABLET CONTROLLER THING WAS A DIFFERENT CONSOLE THE WHOLE TIME!!!''.(insert whatcha say music here)
im sure nintendo can somehow think about this?
These ads were what sold me on the Wii. I don’t know what it was, it was just such a charming commercial to me.
