Over recent years, Critical Music’s talent-incubating ‘Binary’ series has given some of D&B’s most promising new artists a platform to showcase their fledgling skills and future potential.
For its twenty-seventh instalment, Bristol-based DJ and producer Spectral joins the likes of Particle, VISLA and EN:VY by offering up her own debut four-track EP of moody, deep drum & bass that confidently holds its own amongst a powerful set of peers.
From the dark soul of opening track ‘Crazy’, to the full-throttle dance floor pressure of ‘Submerge’, the brain-tapping near-techno of ‘Void’ and the strangely beautiful, epically scaled 'Ikigai' - Spectral’s musical mandate falls neatly within the wider Critical sound.
Spectral was selected back in 2020 from the EQ50 program - which aims to address gender inequality in drum & bass by providing mentorship opportunities with the genre’s most respected labels. Her inaugural outing for Critical suggests that she's ready to help do just that.

Excellent addition to the Binary series, this is the critical sound at its most definitive. The Highly refined atmospherics, the pulsating and shimmering leads. The vocals lay somewhere between soulful, euphoric and ghostly (if not Spectral), that’s not mention the the delicateness of it all being undergirded by the vigorous but spotless drum work 🥁. In true Critical fashion Spectral has found some balance between the razor sharp precision of the machine and the soulfulness and expression of the artist.
