    Great to see Knaresborough again, the place where I spent a year as French assistant at King James’ s School in 1967- 1968. I had a wonderful time . I wonder if the folk club ,close to the railway station , still exists. It was simply marvellous! Thanks so much for the walk! Christiane.

      I remember the folk club in the back of the borough Bailiff on the high street just up from the Railway Station around 1977-1978 the english teachers from King James School were involeved, Henry Ayrton, ( Great bloke) and another that escapes me now

    I'm from the States and spent one night in Knaresborough this past October,I stayed at The Mitre Inn and was up by the castle, but spent most of my time by the riverside, and behind The Mitre. I'm happy to have seen some of the upper town as I didn't venture up there. I'll have to return some day and explore it in more detail. Staying at the Mitre was great for catching the train in the morning, took about 15 seconds from the hotel to the platform ! Also have to comment on leaving the sound track natural instead of having music, I love to hear the sounds of the people, cars , birds, it makes you feel like you are walking the streets yourself, thanks !

    Thank you! I grew up in York and often had days out in Knaresborough with my Grandparents. We did lots of walking. There used to be a small Zoo in town back then and we always finished good weather days at the castle, enjoying the views, a flask of tea and if we were really lucky; a bag of hot chips!

    • @PK-yf3hd
      @PK-yf3hd 2 года назад

      The owner of the private zoo was a very colourful character called Nik Nioka (spelling probably innacurate)who had great experience of working with animals but in an over casual way which brought him into official scrutiny and eventual closure..I recall he was collecting the entrance money from us. Very much hands on! He clearly loved his charges and knew their ways though I heard anacdotally that some of the more slippery ones had been on the point of leaving for a night on the town before being detained and returned to their enclosed life. I definitely recall the photo in the evening paper of him wreathed at the neck with a python or constrictor of uncertain intent. He must have been more circus than zoo...more Amazon than west yorks.

    I've been waiting for this. Thanks! My first time there, I stayed for a week. The next year on my holiday I stayed for two. I love that town. I was supposed to go back last year as a kind of birthday present to myself, but the Covid got in the way. As it is, I don't know when I can come back. Another interesting place and story is St Robert's Cave, along Abbey Road. A bit of a walk though.
    Did you know that the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket fled to Knaresborough Castle for refuge? The history in that town is amazing. When I go, it's always September. The weather is nice, most of the tourists are gone, the kids are back in school, and hotel rates are lower. I feel so at home in that town, I think I could live there, but only for the warmer weather seasons.
