  • Man has vandalized nature through the past centuries and today we are concerned about preserving our natural environment, worried about climatic changes. Not so long ago, when the Aryans settled in Brahmavarta, they were Nature worshippers. The glory and power of nature and man’s dependence on the forces of nature for survival and sustenance made him realize his own miniscule status in this huge universe. Our ancestors revered nature as God.
Many slokas of the Rigveda, the most ancient book of the Hindus, are devoted to the Sun god- Surya. They realized that life is not possible without the sun; that he is the only eye of the universe- there is no vision without him; that it is his energy that makes the rain. The Rigveda says that, that energy of the Sun which makes the rain is known as Indra. The maximum number of slokas in the Rigveda are devoted to Indra. It is said that Indra kills the demon Vrittra to give us the rains. The description of Vrittra having formed from the black fumes of the Yagya fire paints in our modern minds the picture of pollution. Vrittra fills the atmosphere and prevents the rains from falling. Indra with his thunder and lightning kills Vrittra and that is how we get back the rains.
It is time for us to learn from our ancestors - to revere Nature once more.
Today it is our prayer to the Sun, O Surya! Riding your blood red chariot, look at the blood that is shed by people fighting over the colour of their skin, their religion and caste. Yet you, Father of the world, bestow your light equally on all. You hold everyone in your chakra or orbit. You are the creator, you preserve life on earth but you can also destroy. The world is full of sins. Women are violated and the unborn girl child is killed. O Surya, master of the world! Destroy all sins. Burn them with your mighty lamp. May your light enlighten us from within and dispel the darkness of our minds and souls.
