In a time of crisis. Jim came forward with THE anthem of the United States Of America. This is the most influential version of the Star Spangled Banner that I have ever heard. He is the voice of freedom in a time when many people doubted it. When we were most vulnerable. When he belts out the first few notes you can hear the crows react and understand that we are united as one, as a country, as a whole.
God bless the United States Of America and all the people she holds dear.

Before Jim, Patrick Blackwell did the anthem for the Blackhawks, and I honestly thought he was better. Don't get me wrong, Jim is great, and the rafters shake at the UC when he sings, but Blackwell's voice was thunderous.

For those wondering, the cheering during the National Anthem during Hawks games started during the 1991 NHL all star game which was at the height of the first Gulf War. It was done in support of those overseas because the game was being broadcast to the troops. It since became a tradition.

You critics need to take a step back for a moment, and hop off your musical high horse. Jim is a professional operatic vocalist. He raises the spirits of those watching live or on TV or video. When you complain "he's belting out the lyrics" or "he was a little flat", it makes me think you are viewing the petal but missing the flower. There comes a time when the technical aspects of a performance take back seat to the emotional.

Squire Hogg True story - I live in Los Angeles (Carson), grew up a Kings fan but appreciate all the teams and the athletes that play hockey. I don’t remember hearing Jim until the 2013 series with LA but he certainly made an impression. Fast forward to 2019, my 50th birthday was February 22 and when the schedule came out last June I hoped one of my three “bucket list” cities would have a game that night - New York, Toronto, Chicago. Chicago did - they hosted Colorado, and as luck would have it the teams were tied going into that game. I flew in from LA on the 22nd, Ubered to my hotel, taxied to United Center, heard Jim sing, took the bus back to my hotel, flew home the next day. Dream come true, watching an Original 6 team in its home city. That, and hearing Jim in person. Worth every penny and I’m not well-to-do.

Once we were United. Oh Dear God, Please unite us once again. It was by fate that I happen to catch this rendition on that day so long ago. In that moment of my 54th year of being an American that I finally understood exactly what the lyrics meant. Listening to Jim Cornelison that day, watching as Police Officers, Firefighters, First responders, and NFL athletes gathered around that gigantic flag. In that all too brief of a moment, the only colors that were relevant were Red, White and Blue. I hope that as he bellowed out those and when he came to the part of the song that says "That our Flag was STILL THERE" The gesture he made by raising his hand, as if he was showing us all that despite all else, Our symbol is still there. I began to weep uncontrolably because I got it, I finally understood what being an American was all about and why this song was chosen. Finally, as the overhead camera panned above the Flag and showed all those in attendance, all the labels were gone, all the various identities, Male, Female, black, white, immigrant, native, gay, straight. I saw just one identity that afternoon, American. Hey Matt Kostbade, This American doesn't mind if you cheer during the Anthem. If that's the "Chicago Way" I'm in, because y'all get it too.
