Just put a set of Apex EC07 silver wheels and Continental EC02 tires on our C8. Actually went DOWN in wheel diameter to 18"/19" to gain a bit more sidewall for our road trips. I had the same choice and chose a R8 V10 manual. Having driven all of them, nothing beats a gated manual even in V8 form. If you want an auto trans, then Corvette all the way. Its dual clutch is better than the early R8’s single clutch (R-tronic). Audi went dual clutch in model year 2014 (S-tronic). Any R8 with a manual is a future classic and will appreciate. Base C8’s are a dime a dozen and will continue to depreciate
The R8 is amazing but the C8 for all around driving and likely much cheaper to repair and to modify. As much as I am not a Corvette guy I really like the C8 at that price.
I've owned Corvettes for many years. They may be less expensive to fix than Ferraris, but they are not inexpensive. A rear main leak repair can cost $3000.
This is the best automotive RUclips channel. High quality content. I haven't checked the prices of Gallardo's, but it would be cool to compare to a C8.
Todd has better taste in cars. A mid-engined sports car is an emotional purchase, not a rational one. Buying a sports car and then saying that it's bad as a daily driver is missing the point.
Seems rational to me. I want a car with a low polar moment of inertia for better handling. A mid-engined car is the only one that fits that bill. Rational.
This is a comparison video showing the changes to the everyday supercar formula over the years. Most people will buy the brand new car with warranty over a 15 year old one, no warranty and German on top of that. You have to have a real soft spot for the R8 to take the risk in spending brand new car money on it.
Tbh, if I had the cash, between the 2, Audi, the looks and the Manual Transmission are what I'd want most. Yeah the C8 is objectively better in almost every way, but, that's not what I really care about at the end of the day. Shifting gears is cathartic
I love these non-obvious comparisons the rest of us only get to play out in our heads. I Covette against an Audi R8, or Lotus Emira, or Porsche 911? Certainly! What else can you come up with? Beautiful roads. Wish I knew this route.
I love your channel. First, I enjoy seeing you drive cars that I will never own or probably drive. HOWEVER more important you guys teach us to think. In March my Nissan Xterra was totaled. Fortunately, I have recovered. So how do I replace it? Being immobile for 3 months I had a lot of time for research. One thing I learned is most RUclips reviews are "rinse and repeat." Watching you guys, has taught me to think! The real question is, "What do I want for my Everyday Driver?" I think you will be surprised where I finally landed. I had to set a budget. Do I go used or new? I chose to buy new if at all possible. I'd say 90% of my driving is from home to work. I don't want to write a book, but listening to you two banter for years has taught me that there is no "one size fits all." One of my needs is I do hunt and fish in the mountains, but I really don't need a "rock crawler." Comfort and visibility out the front and side are important to me. I wanted some pep. I wanted some handling on the mountain roads that are paved. So following your thinking and do some test driving I ended up with a Heritage Edition of the Ford Bronco Sport. Is it perfect? No. I'm going to upgrade the tires. I bought the 3 cylinder because many respected reviewers said it improves cornering having a lighter engine up front. Looks matter. Robin's Egg Blue is one of my favorite colors, so that is what I got. With the all wheel drive it is very fun on the winding roads. Sport mode could end up with me seeing flashing lights in the rear view mirror. I've had my share of sport cars, a BMW and a Camaro were two of my favorite. I would call my Bronco Sport, Miata like. So for now, I have an "Everyday Driver." that I look forward to jumping into whether I am going to work, heading in the mountains to go fishing or hunting, or just enjoying the winding paved roads. Thanks guys for teaching us how to think.
It's an awesome car, I have a Neptune Blue '23. And I'll say, having driven a C8 back to back with my car, the GR86 is more fun on a tight road. But it isn't the all rounder the C8 is.
@@rdiamond655 yeah, I had a 2015 GTR I sold last year . I know it won’t be as fast but the backroads I like taking are more about the turns and scenery so I know it will be enough for now 🙌
Sideblade all day everyday. EDIT: It is a shame the suspension on the R8 was garbage. Dynamically the C8 may be better, but when considering everything else, I still lean R8 for sentimental reasons, on top of the looks, the sound, the gated manual, all weather handling minus the silly Audi maintenance issues. When Todd brought up the back end of the R8, it is exactly my biggest gripe with the C8. The back deck, all to have that golf bag bs, is what ruins the looks of the car. A C7 is so much better looking and is actually the Vette I might take over an R8.
Both Corvette models were pumped out in the tens of thousands per year, making them very common sights on the road. I want uniqueness and a smaller footprint.
Fantastic piece! A bit of a tough call, for sure, but the gated V8 is hard to pass up! That exhaust sounded awesome to me, but so did the one in the C7 I had for the meet up. At least from the outside. From the inside not so much!
This was a no brainer for me. Few months ago, I bought an Audi R8 V10 coupe with a manual in Suzuka Grey (looks like ice white to me) with 48k km (30k miles) on it. There were 4 to choose from across Europe. I’m usually dissapointed with things I look forward to, NOT with this car. It’s wonderful.
All things being equal I would probably go with the Audi, but the cost of ownership for an aging Audi vs a new Chevy would be the tipping point for me. I’ve owned a couple of C4s when I was younger, and I’m definitely considering a C8 now.
C8 for me all day. I got to deliver one across town when I used to work for Carmax and that was such a thrilling, stable and comfortable car. It’s my attainable dream car.
Very interesting idea. Honestly from the announcement of the C8 and its pricing I’ve contemplated this comparison. If you can get an R8 in a stick I think the choice is R8. As those gated manuals start to climb in price the decision is inching closer and closer to C8.
They cost about the same, but the difference will be in depreciation (C8) vs maintenance (R8). I would pick the C8 for daily and the R8 (convertible) for weekend fun. That R8 exhaust sounds amazing.
But then you have to factor in the maintenance and repairs on a 15 year old Audi R8 without a warranty. Not sure if you caught that the exhaust is aftermarket on the Audi. It is nowhere near that loud normally.
@@barryrodgers3039 I don't think the Corvettes are depreciating all that much. The days of picking up a nice C6 Corvette for a cheap price are gone. Meanwhile, you could be in for a five-figure repair on the Audi if something goes terribly wrong.
Sorry it took me so long to watch it guys. Great video as usual. To each their own but (too loud, still sounds amazing exhaust aside) I’m picking the R8. It’s an event car. The looks and nostalgia is real and I feel like I’m the corvette that would wear off sooner for me than in the Audi.
The crazier thing is that you will keep better value, if not see appreciation in 86k mile car. It’s a future classic. Stingray is mass produced, z06 etc is a different story.
I went from a 370Z to a C8. First thing I noticed was the weight in a turn. There is a turn on the way to work that I took at 60mph in the 370Z. I am getting use to holding the same turn at 60mph in the C8 and learning to trust the car. I am getting use to the weight pushing me from behind down the road into the turn.
@MickDavies oh it absolutely sounded glorious! It just wasn't very fitting to the car's character. Stock is too quiet but this was too much in the other direction imo.
C8 great car, very fast but it leaves me very cold and my friends who trade supercars say they drop value fast , R8 will always be special and different, fast enough.
On the one hand, I thought "no fair comparing a 2000's car to a 2020's car!" But then, the old Audi still stands up to a C8? Wow. I'd spend a little more for a little newer R8 over the C8. The R8 has PRESENCE on the road. The C8 is...just another Corvette.
I mean performance-wise the R8 doesn’t stand up to the Corvette. The Corvette beats it in the 0-60, 1/4, and around the Nurburgring. Hell the Corvette even beats the v10 Audi r8 around some tracks.
Still remember the concept car in 2003 and then the very simmilar looking "future interpreatation car" in the "I Robot" movie for the first time. I prayed so hard that Audi builds this as soon as possible. Sadly i never won in the lottery to buy one new. Funny enough, i bought a used Corvette C6 4 years ago. And now safe money to find a well priced R8 from around 2012-2015.. Keep on the great works, guys! Greets from Munich:)
I would never pay the same $ for a used Audi vs a new C8. But I’m pretty biased cuz we have 2 C8s. Out of the 8 Vettes we’ve owned over the years, these cars do everything well. We daily drive them, road trips, mountains driving… just a great car. That said, I’ve always loved the R8 (& it’s little brother the TT)
Great comparison. Sounds like the C8 is similar to what you all say about the Golf R/GTI. In other words, it sounds like a great all-arounder… perhaps, a master of none, except maybe performance.
18:20 the factory suspension on the R8’s blows out with much less than 80k miles. At the tune of $3500 each to replace the factory coil over that’s why this car has aftermarket coilovers.
Great review. at first wasn't sure if it made sense ,but taking a closer look it did. New vs used for similar $$ is an eternal question for enthusiasts that need to consider a price point For me, a manual is mandatory(see Todd's comments about the gated manual). I'm sure todays auto/pdk/dcts are great but for me driver engagement/experience is paramount. Also, new isn't always better Especially when looking at how antiseptic most new sports cars are becoming. Sports cars . Sports cars used to require commitment and were uncompromising in what they asked of you. Just ask Paul and Todd how they feel about their "old " Cayman and Elise.
The vette can be insanely modified on the cheap. It will be cheaper to maintain. It's easier to procure parts. Also; this can be bored and stroked into a big block fairly cheap I would pick the vette
I owners a 2012 low mile V8 R8 4 years ago, then a FBO GTR last year and now a 3LT C8. There’s no comparison. The C8 destroys everything about the R8. The only thing the c8 doesn’t compete against my old GTR is the power. That thing was a blast but sitting inside was like being in a Nissan Sentra.
How about the gen 2 NSX. It is most likely the most reliable exotic car. Now if you were to be not concerned about reliability, I'd take a used McLaren 570 Spider. It is much faster than the C8 in the 1/4 mile.
These cars are both great. However, I spent my money on a manual 718 Spyder. Yes only 6 cylinders but great manual, drop top, plenty of room for bags on a road trip, and it sounds great too.
For looks, high rpm, manual, I'd go R8. But I'd want it with proper suspension - either rebuilt factory items or some quality aftermarket stuff with little to no lowering. Very interesting comparison, and I love how far apart Todd and Paul's commentary is!
You can make the argument about depreciating assets, but the R8 has held its value well. The corvette(standard) is a production car and has been hit hard with depreciation. I see corvettes everywhere. Seeing an R8 is a treat. I’d buy the R8 and hang a supercharger on it to solve the meh power delivery. Giddy up
That R8 is a modern classic. It still has so much road presence. I’m glad it wasn’t massed produced… less of them on the road makes them even that more unique.
Yeah, but those early R8 unibodies fatigue and stress crack the car into two pieces through normal driving. Always be sure to check under the plastic cover that covers the wiper arms and motor. There will be stress marks right behind the strut towers. Those cars total themselves over time.
I love the idea of the C8. While I haven't driven one (I'd like to), I just do not like the large size, heavy weight, and the very odd appearance it can have at certain angles because of the rear. I had a similar choice to make recently when I bought a sports car and I did not chose the C8. It's all just personal preference to me. I think that a lot of cars can be better than another for a particular buyer - it depends on what they prioritize. I prioritize lower weight and a smaller size (I'd love a Miata with a V6/V8). I don't begrudge anyone for prioritizing other traits.
Has to be the r8 that engine yes only has 420 bhp but for the road it’s perfect and can ring all the gears high revving sounds glorious looks absolutely gorjeous and that gated manual is just so good and sounds beautiful hard to believe it’s 16 years old
My choice would be C8 But the Audi would also have a place in my garage. Not as a daily but a weekend get out and drive type of car. I love the first gen R8 it has the look and feel of a drivers car and a timeless design. Awesome video love the channel.
I'll probably never be able to afford either of these wonderful cars, but if I applied my usual car buying logic, I'd probably buy the C8 Corvette. Reliable, cheaper to service, new car warranty (or some kind of warranty if you buy a CPO), modern tech, and more usable for a daily driver. Plus, my parents had a yellow C3 when I was a little kid, so I'll always have a soft spot for the Vette. That being said, I love the R8. The looks, the sound, the uniqueness, the rarity, and a gated manual V8. The C8 - while now kind of common, even here in northern Ohio - still turns my head. But seeing an R8 in person is an event. They're just special in a way most C8s will never be. But being a more pragmatic enthusiast, I'd buy the C8.
Get a weekend job........take college courses........believe in yourself and achieve your dreams. If you dream is an Audi or Vette......plan your goals, work hard and soon your will find yourself ABLE to buy something like this. Cheers !

@@matthewrball r8 will always be more exclusive and get more attention. If you're looking for driver involvement, c8 is probably better
They’re both great cars. Test drive both and see which one brings you more enjoyment. The C8 will be cheaper to maintain and has more cargo space but the R8 with a manual is an exotic gem that will turn more heads as you drive down the road. Good luck with your choice!
Save money and buy a v10. It's absolutely pure joy!
I'm a manual guy but, there is no way I would ever choose a v8 r8 over a brand new c8. V10 r8 is a whole other bag of worms.
But once ya get into the garden soil you find z06s and zr1s
C6 ZR1 is a better choice for the same price.
Exactly, the V10 R8 is the car they should have compared. 1st with gates manual is an instant classic
@@chadkelliher500why, why why should they have compared to more expensive Audi to the base Corvette when you out there were using was already more expensive? Let me guess, so the Audi seemed relevant right😂
Just put a set of Apex EC07 silver wheels and Continental EC02 tires on our C8. Actually went DOWN in wheel diameter to 18"/19" to gain a bit more sidewall for our road trips. Tires are new vs old 19/20 PS4S tires with about 14k miles and 3 years age on them, so of course they're quieter and very, VERY responsive. Very happy so far.
I had the same choice! Went for the c8. Hardtop convertible, N/A American v8, reliable, trunk that fits my golf clubs, front lift, cameras, cheapish mods too! And I built it brand new to my spec
Kicking myself for not buying a manual R8 when they dipped into the 50s
They arent cheap to maintain
I was going to say the same thing, sir James.. but man are they awesome!
the prices are coming down to a more reasonable level lately , by the end of the year I wouldn't be surprised if it dipped into the 50's again .
@SirJamesTND do they have engine issues ?
I think to remember that the 4.2 V8 FSI at least has issues with intake carbon and oil built up, but not shure how significant this might be on a long term

I appreciate the dancer analogy for the transmission choices, Todd!
actually the 1st yr in the us was 2008. I love my gated 2008. you cant beat the analog feel that seems lost on todays cars. By adding a nice titanium exhaust and removing quattro for an RWD conversion, its a blast!
How much weight did you save by going RWD?
It’s something like 100lbs and easily reversible.
@@Accost2u exactly. just remove the DS, front diff, 2 front axels, and add axel delete kit. mine came with carbon ceramic brakes too which save several lbs on each corner over the steel brakes
How's the handling feel before/ after the delete?
Its a dream of mine to own a gen 1 manual V8 R8 with a RWD conversion and a loud exhaust!
The Apex wheels look great.
Wish Chevy offered something like them from the factory.
Love em both but I’d take the R over the C
Great comparison
was wondering when somebody would figure this out. And give us a vid. This was great.
We consider that a huge compliment. We’re thrilled you like what we do and thank you for watching!
Rational.
agreed
Unless you are planning on driving it regularly 🤷♂️
This is a comparison video showing the changes to the everyday supercar formula over the years. Most people will buy the brand new car with warranty over a 15 year old one, no warranty and German on top of that. You have to have a real soft spot for the R8 to take the risk in spending brand new car money on it.
Yesss. Working from home today so I can jib that off and throw this on the home theater.
Great stuff. After spending last weekend at Road America for IMSA, I've heard the Corvette sermons and I'm going to find a C5 (high school era) soon.
Tbh, if I had the cash, between the 2, Audi, the looks and the Manual Transmission are what I'd want most.
Yeah the C8 is objectively better in almost every way, but, that's not what I really care about at the end of the day.
Shifting gears is cathartic
I agree, but the manual for the Audi V8 is absolutely terrible.
@@necromorphdrifts9255is it actually? I know they have poor air suspension and the first gen tiptronic
@@AS-oo4gv Yeah they even mentioned it in the video. They break too.
Then wait to see if the C8 ZR1 offers a manual. There's always the C7.
Man I love your guys content! Always relevant!
A great comparison that I would have never thought of. Thanks guys!! And those Apex wheels are 🔥

A C7 is so much better looking and is actually the Vette I might take over an R8.
mostly boomers that golf buy Corvettes if you haven't noticed
Lies. I don't golf and haven't met a C8 owner that golfs. @@SonOfTamriel

Fantastic piece! A bit of a tough call, for sure, but the gated V8 is hard to pass up! That exhaust sounded awesome to me, but so did the one in the C7 I had for the meet up. At least from the outside. From the inside not so much!
What a bummer to not have that R8 suspension dialed in.
Thanks for the chat!
Back from an overseas family vacation. Nothing like Saturday morning, coffee, buttered roll and Everyday Driver to get back to center.
I'm a Serb, if I had money and would be choosing, I would chose Corvette without question.. Greetings from Europe.
Make sense. The corvette is new and more of an exotic car than tha R8 in Europe.

C8 for me all day. I got to deliver one across town when I used to work for Carmax and that was such a thrilling, stable and comfortable car. It’s my attainable dream car.
I'll take the boat, thanks. Not even for the cargo which is a plus. For the proportions. Voluptuous with hips!
Very interesting idea. Honestly from the announcement of the C8 and its pricing I’ve contemplated this comparison. If you can get an R8 in a stick I think the choice is R8. As those gated manuals start to climb in price the decision is inching closer and closer to C8.
Hmm Chevy Corvette reliability and cost of parts vs. Audi reliability and cost of parts. Gonna have to go with the Vette.
That r8 sounds fantastic
The R8 with the V10 would be a no-brainer!
Is the R8 with V10 in the $70K range?
Fun times guys!!
@@norwegianblue2017 That was sort of the point of the comment. Thousands in maintenance vs thousands in depreciation every year.
@@barryrodgers3039 I don't think the Corvettes are depreciating all that much. The days of picking up a nice C6 Corvette for a cheap price are gone. Meanwhile, you could be in for a five-figure repair on the Audi if something goes terribly wrong.
@@norwegianblue2017 Chevy makes over 40k corvettes per year. When the vette is as old as the R8, it will be a $30k car.

Do I want an 86,000 mile R8 vs a brand new C8? Is that meant to be funny?
The crazier thing is that you will keep better value, if not see appreciation in 86k mile car. It’s a future classic. Stingray is mass produced, z06 etc is a different story.

86k miles? I got mine totally unmolested with 20k miles for a fair bit less than the c8
That is normal when moving from a front engine car to a rear/mid engined one.
Love the new wheels.....looks better and functions better 👍
Just prior to you complain about the exhaust I was thinking how good is sounds 😂 and sounded similyto a V8 supercar here in Australia
They're four yrs old & I still haven't seen one under 60k,yea their tanking!
Great video, very fitting comparison. Something to consider if* you can find a low milage, manual r8.
R8 V8 W/armytrix exhaust = perfection
On the one hand, I thought "no fair comparing a 2000's car to a 2020's car!" But then, the old Audi still stands up to a C8? Wow. I'd spend a little more for a little newer R8 over the C8. The R8 has PRESENCE on the road. The C8 is...just another Corvette.

Great job on this video production! It's interesting how similar the R8 and C8 are. The wheels on the C8 do look great. The Audi wheels also are nice.
That is a very old Audi, 4 years and it will be 20 years old, nice classic car video
I think use case and whether or not it's a second vehicle is a key to what is the best choice for most people.
The R8 in a heartbeat. Academic, since I am good with my FK8. But still the Audi is a modern classic.
The vette can be insanely modified on the cheap. It will be cheaper to maintain. It's easier to procure parts. Also; this can be bored and stroked into a big block fairly cheap
I would pick the vette
Audi sounds better and has a gated 6. I'm convinced, buying one.
That was an aftermarket exhaust.
Corvette cost of ownership wins it for me.
C8. The R8 looks more elegant but that particular one is so old.
I get it, half the fun is sport driving & having complete control but that Corvette is it for me & love the color & new wheels too!
still got my 2012 r8 v8 6mt, still loving it.
1:47 in i already know the answer, peace
These cars are both great. However, I spent my money on a manual 718 Spyder. Yes only 6 cylinders but great manual, drop top, plenty of room for bags on a road trip, and it sounds great too.
I would happily take the first gen V8 R8. That car is gorgeous.
For looks, high rpm, manual, I'd go R8. But I'd want it with proper suspension - either rebuilt factory items or some quality aftermarket stuff with little to no lowering.
Very interesting comparison, and I love how far apart Todd and Paul's commentary is!
16:44 Just like Jhon Davis says "True to the Old School" 😮
You can get a DCT (S-tronic) in the facelift Gen 1 R8, both V8 and V10 as well. Makes a difference
R8 of course! A true classic.... But I need the rwd v10
Giddy up
R8 for me
For the refresh of the C8 (or C9), i would like those hard edges (body lines) smooth out. 👍
Manual transmission always wins. I’m not racing. I just want power and fun to drive.
I’ll take the R8!
Has to be the r8 that engine yes only has 420 bhp but for the road it’s perfect and can ring all the gears high revving sounds glorious looks absolutely gorjeous and that gated manual is just so good and sounds beautiful hard to believe it’s 16 years old
A 3.0 Supra is faster and is very rare.
My choice would be C8 But the Audi would also have a place in my garage. Not as a daily but a weekend get out and drive type of car. I love the first gen R8 it has the look and feel of a drivers car and a timeless design. Awesome video love the channel.
Such a great comparison.
For me nothing would beat the driver's involvement feeling of a RWD ME V8 w/. a 6MT shifter. Maybe a Ferrari F430 or '05 Ford GT
Cheers !
Audi R8 is a timeless classic. I’d rather have that.
The R8 looks so outdated! And has a VW engine. Corvette looks new and modern! Plus all the new tech and still under warranty!
@@wstlndiesel what? The R8 doesn't look dated at all. Interior tech is dated but that's about it, the exterior is timeless, especially 2014+ facelift tail and headlights or with 2010+ headlights even. The vette is chimera based off multiple other sports cars, might look striking at first sight from afar but when you actually take time to observe it, it's quite ugly. It's also incredibly boring to drive and they are everywhere, basically regular traffic at this point. The R8 has a refined silhouette that did and always will look unique and different than any other car on the market. The vette is just a cheap trendy exotic look-alike mass production car that everyone will forget once gm comes out with the next gen.
In the Uk you can get an R8 manual for £30K ($38k). Still a great car but many have been ‘tinkered’ with and are no longer standard. The gangsta look, looks wrong on an R8 IMHO
