I know it's seriously messed up but I love this one. And, that drunken, lumbering Godzilla theme brings back memories from my childhood. Thanks for this one.
I saw this movie when I was about 8 ( Japanese movies and Tv shows were all over the local stations) on a late night movie show that did monster and teen beach movies.
Oh man, you actually jumped ahead to the infamous flying scene before even hitting the 30-second mark!!! That's just how crazy this one is, sending the reviewer hurtling into the third act during the intro!!!
This is actually one of my favourite Godzilla movies. I loved it for all of its weirdness! Of course the lack of budget clearly shows throughout the movie but they seem to have used even that to enhance the weirdness. Did you know that they originally planned for the singer in the halluclnatory scene to be just in body paintings over her nude body, but changed the plan presumably to accomodate for the kid audience?
Thanks for the fun review - I was 11 years old when this was released in the U.S., and I went to my local theater hoping for another escapist blow-out like "Monster Zero." I didn't get it. As an adult, I understand that the filmmakers were trying to adapt to changing times, but that first viewing was a very depressing experience for me.
+Yeti Man Specifically, that was a piece of Hedorah that dislodged itself from the remains and generated its own body. Remember, it was established that each dismembered piece of Hedorah can take on a life of its own.
Thank you for reviewing this, i think when they made this drugs were involved lol, i laughed so hard when you said even the theme music isn't happy to see him lol
Yes, this movie was a definite sign of the times. It did know how to hit the target audience though. A critic mentioned it in a review of the movie "Caveman". He said if "Godzilla vs The Smog Monster" was the greatest movies ever made "Caveman" would still be among the worst.
They are Hedorah's eyes. In fact, I read an interview with the director once where he confirmed it. The movie barely even states it, but the eyes are important to the creature being alive. In fact the whole film uses eyes as a theme!
One thing I liked about the new Godzilla film was that they made him a neutral natural force that didn't really care about humans. Way more preferable than making him a hero...
One of my top favorite Godzilla films. I didn't love it either the very first time, but now consider it great. Hedorah may seem a very obvious design but he's quite inspired & has stood the test of time. Also, this may have been pointed out already, but the International dub sucks rocks. Find the AIP "Smog Monster" dub, which was what played in U.S. theaters & on TV.
Maybe having your pollution monster be fighting the creature literally born out of radioactive fallout is a little too meta for kids. No, I think Hedorah's nemesis should have been Mothra from the start.
After the '54 Godzilla film the series got sillier with each subsequent sequel, most unwatchable nowadays, especially those targeted towards children. But Godzilla vs The Smog Monster actually had potential for being a genuinely good film and was sabotaged by too many goofy scenes. The titular monster is quite creepy and its corrosive powers are decidedly more disturbing than your standard kaiju adversary for G. The environmental message is too heavy-handed. If there is one Godzilla film that should be remade it is this one. Just allow the themes on pollution to speak through the monster. The most grotesque moments are when Godzilla gets splattered with the toxic phlegm.
Yeah! What were those things Godzilla pulled out of the Smog Monster? I'm guessing eyeballs, eggs or testicles, and in any case it wasn't cool for him to do that. That's just not good guy behavior.
According to one of those "bad movie" books, there were riots when the dubbed version was shown in America. "Don't worry, Godzilla has only reached the Negro part of town."
As long as there were drive-ins , AIP was going to keep paying for these kind of movies. Godizilla was aimed at kids because he stopped being scary. As a matter a fact, he stopped being scary as soon as they switched him B&W to color.
I couldn't stand the idea that they had to make Godzilla socially relevant by having him fight (poorly)against an alien creature that feeds on smog! If they were going to do that, you'd think Godzilla would have a better chance against it. Maybe the "message" was that by ourselves or if some outside help comes by themselves they have no chance against pollution, but all united we can win.
I sing the English language chorus when people I know come and expecting me the to do what ever they ask because they refuse to do... but act like it's the biggest crisis known to the human race!
Hello, Robin. My name is Wario94 and I'm enjoyed watching your Dark Corners (of This Sick World) videos. Here's my request: can you review "Gigantis, The Fire Monster"? It is the American version of the original Japanese film "Godzilla Rades Again", but this version is really worst than the original version like changing character's names and replacing "Bagawa" (that's dummy in Japanese) with "Banana Oil".
Hello, my name is Wario94 and I'm one of your biggest fans for D.C. Here's my request: how about the review for Gigantis, The Fire Monster. Yeah I know, that film is even worst than the original Japanese version.
Of course Gojira can fly. ALL kaiju can fly, can they not? Which is why the emphasis on the designation, "Rodan, the FLYING Monster!" has always somewhat baffled me. 🙄
you are completely missing the point they are not supposed to make any sense! they are about two monsters fighting and smashing up buildings and any resemblance to a story is purely coincidental.
That is on our list - we do plan to work our way through all the Godzilla films - although some a great films and don't deserved to be mocked like this one.
Connor Brennan I would have to break it down into different eras. Besides the original, I think that Mothra vs Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla are the best of the Showa series. In the 90s Heisei series, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah are the best. In the Millenium series, Godzilla vs Megaguirus, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla Final Wars are the best.
To be fair, English translation of Japanese science-fiction and horror films manage to end up WORSE than the originals. Not quite as bad as American remakes such as THE RING or THE GRUDGE but ALMOST. ALWAYS BUY AND WATCH THE SUBTITLED ORIGINAKS if you can, NEVER DUBBED or REMADE. Compare Rodan (English Dub with Rodan (original with subtitles) and see for yourselves. They are two different movies, Trust me,
It’s too bad this one was one of the straight for kiddies Godzilla cause the Godzilla suit and the smog monster were really good. And though totally stupid, particularly when g does that aerial shit, the fights were great and heforahs castration was pretty funny. Kind of weird though too.
When will they come out with the global warming/climate change monster versus Godzilla? - Not that I will watch it. I feel embarrassed for mankind that these movies keep coming and people keep watching them.
In god zilla and gamera movies it seems to be a trope. There is a solution that counts on a power source. It’s working but they deside to push it to its limits causing it to crash. Raising the Jeopardy. A movie that covers several Genre tropes used this. Teenagers ... Alien invaders.. murder mystery ... and giant monsters. Teenagers from outer space.

The Smog Monster is on of his greatest enemies!!!
4:48 Those were Hedorah's eyes.
No because he springs back to life and he still has them
+Yeti Man Specifically, that was a piece of Hedorah that dislodged itself from the remains and generated its own body. Remember, it was established that each dismembered piece of Hedorah can take on a life of its own.
Yeti Man Also, the director confirmed that it was Hedorah’s eyes that were pulled from the body, which was a recurring theme in the movie.
I thought for sure they were his balls, my mistake
Not grapefruit he was carrying in his lunch pail? You're positive, are you? 🥭🥭
Ja ja i saw this one yesterday and i didn't knew you review it fun to know, i really like this one
Thank you for reviewing this, i think when they made this drugs were involved lol, i laughed so hard when you said even the theme music isn't happy to see him lol
Quick poll: who do you think would be more effective against Hedorah?
1: Godzilla
2: Captain Planet
I love this movie it was a big part of my childhood
Great memories of being a kid and sitting on the front row of a large theater with my brother and best friend watching this!
4:48 This Godzilla film is the most grotesque I've ever seen. What is Godzilla during to that creature? Tearing the eggs out of its body?
Godzilla the abortionist
Thanks for reviewing this one! Its pretty.... interesting (trippy)
Looks like it is currently tie bewteen Monster Zero and Godzilla Raids Again... watch this space.
still waiting for more Godzilla! great channel, btw
You guys should review Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla next
Yes, this movie was a definite sign of the times. It did know how to hit the target audience though. A critic mentioned it in a review of the movie "Caveman". He said if "Godzilla vs The Smog Monster" was the greatest movies ever made "Caveman" would still be among the worst.
The tin cans at 2:18 must be huge.
If you aren't weirded out enough, those things Godzilla removes from the Smog Monster look suspiciously like eggs.
Yeah I liked his character in the new film more so than the actual new film :P
To be fair they were aiming this movie at small kids.......The Ghostbusters cartoon made Slimer 'a good guy' etc
The crazier the better with these old creature features.....Like it or not they are perfect to giggle at when smoking the doob
One of my top favorite Godzilla films. I didn't love it either the very first time, but now consider it great. You have to check out the 1996 Jack Scalia film Dark Breed... I'd be interested to hear your opinion of it!
Son of Godzilla. Absolutely Son of Godzilla.
Oh man this movie.
Great review guys!
+Giovanni Ahrcherii Thanks
The first Godzilla movie I remember seeing.
PLEASE do Irwin Allen's The Lost World!
Hewylewis Thinking about Irwin Allen, a new, more sophisticated VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA series would be nice. It would probably work.
Awesome review!!!!
Good job destroying my childhood. This is still my favorite Godzilla movie.
Saw this in the cinema. And loved IT
You're old.
That's okay, I saw The Sound of Music in the cinema the first time around.

Please review "All Monsters Attack" (1969). It's even more weird than this one.
According to one of those "bad movie" books, there were riots when the dubbed version was shown in America. "Don't worry, Godzilla has only reached the Negro part of town."
When you destroy for35 days that would be 900 buildings
It was alot better than king Kong Vs Godzilla it was talking about we need to get rid of the pollution or it will get rid of us.
As long as there were drive-ins , AIP was going to keep paying for these kind of movies. Godizilla was aimed at kids because he stopped being scary. As a matter a fact, he stopped being scary as soon as they switched him B&W to color.
wait about godzilla vs kong or godzilla vs mothra?
He was competing with Johnny Zuko and Space Giants they needed a "good guy" creature in Japan.
I couldn't stand the idea that they had to make Godzilla socially relevant by having him fight (poorly)against an alien creature that feeds on smog! i like Mothra and Godzilla babymetal band reminds me of the little singing faries
you should do godzilla vs gigan
If i had to suggest another godzilla film it would have to be godzilla vs the sea monster it has a decent plot but fails miserably.
AJewBag89 yeah
Godzilla vs Monster Zero where Godzilla dance when he win a fight!
Please review Godzilla vs. Megalon.
How about Monster Zero.
the director and everyone on set must have been high while making this movie it's the only exception for a movie this weard
Can you review Godzilla's Revenge and Planet of Dinosaurs!!!!!!!
+Jason Bellows Godzilla's Revenge is up on Tuesday and Planet of Dinosaurs up in a few weeks!
I'll start: BRING BACK THE CLASSIC AMERICAN GODZILLAs FROM THE 60s AND 70s!
Wish we could get all the Godzilla movies with the real English dubs
Godzilla 1985 or the original one in Japanese the return of Godzilla aka Godzilla 1984
I feel like whoever happens to be commanding the X-1 is the best character in the '80s Godzilla movies, e.g., Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2.
Final Wars... great action!
Great review, as always. As for which Godzilla movie to review next, I suggest Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. It's my all time favorite Godzilla movie.
Hello, Robin. My name is Wario94 and I'm enjoyed watching your Dark Corners (of This Sick World) videos. Here's my request: can you review "Gigantis, The Fire Monster"? Alex Ashbourne We will certinly plan to do all the Godzilla films and Godzilla Raids Again is very near the top.
Hello, my name is Wario94 and I'm one of your biggest fans for D.C.
Here's my request: how about the review for Gigantis, The Fire Monster. Yeah I know, that film is even worst than the original Japanese version.
Amazing how the Japanese forgot about Godzilla stomping all over their cities and killing a hundred thousand of them.
It was an accident sheesh
Of course Gojira can fly. ALL kaiju can fly, can they not? Which is why the emphasis on the designation, "Rodan, the FLYING Monster!" has always somewhat baffled me. 🙄
Children and the stoned? Not much of a difference. Except the children are sometimes a lot less gullible and harder to fool.
the smog monster is kind of cute
+Millie Hayes Not sure I would go with cute... but each to their own.
yeah,if you like damaged lungs.
This guy doesn't understand the concept of "the hero's journey" in storytelling.
Anyway if this were to happen, humanity is screwed.......
Godzilla's Revange
you are completely missing the point they are not supposed to make any sense! they are about two monsters fighting and smashing up buildings and any resemblance to a story is purely coincidental.
Son of Godzilla?
Keiko Mari ❤🇯🇵😍
Yeah, Godzilla got his ass kicked throughout the film. Great review. You should do Mothra vs Godzilla.
That is on our list - we do plan to work our way through all the Godzilla films - although some a great films and don't deserved to be mocked like this one.
I'm curious. What Godzilla films besides the original do you think are the best?
Connor Brennan I would have to break it down into different eras. Besides the original, I think that Mothra vs Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla are the best of the Showa series. In the 90s Heisei series, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah are the best. In the Millenium series, Godzilla vs Megaguirus, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla Final Wars are the best.
Would you review the movie Lawrence of Arabia?
+Joshua Shipman that seems unlikely
and GONE WITH THE WIND 1939
And "Citizen Kane"? LOL!

When Godzilla becomes a ripoff of Gamera... which was an obvious ripoff of Godzilla.
It’s too bad this one was one of the straight for kiddies Godzilla cause the Godzilla suit and the smog monster were really good. And though totally stupid, particularly when g does that aerial shit, the fights were great and heforahs castration was pretty funny. Kind of weird though too.
Godzilla 1985
Is that the one where Raymond Burr returns as the reporter from the first one? If so, then yes.
So, who's the top?
You look like British daddy derek
All of the Godzilla movies from the 1960's to the 1980's were kiddie films
4:45 the 1st monster sex change operation.................
You're right, man. Weird...and crappy.
can u review that all time classic ...they saved Hitler's brain...thanks
Now this one we have shot and edited and I think is out next week!
Dark Corners Reviews I'm sure you had a great time with that one? LOL
godzilla gets political.
I guess it's an anti-Chinese movie being that it's against pollution.
When will they come out with the global warming/climate change monster versus Godzilla? - Not that I will watch it.
I feel embarrassed for mankind that these movies keep coming and people keep watching them.
