If you’re earning in USD, GBP, and/or EUR, you can literally eat the best of the best at a very reasonable cost. When I was in Jo’berg a couple of months ago, I was eating at some of the more expensive restaurants, and it was almost 1/4 of the cost I’d pay in the U.S. I love, love the ZAR to USD conversion!
Woolies is like Marks and Spencer Food in the UK where I’m from. Woolies like M&S is where I might pick up certain things as a treat ( the desserts 😋), but I wouldn’t do my weekly shop there. When I’m in SA, I go to Checkers.

The coastal areas outside of the WC are also at risk as last time I was home, I was hearing a lot of foreign languages (mainly EU) in my home city of Gqeberha/PE which is unusual as we normally don’t get a lot of tourism. I’m not against tourism as it’s good for the economy but it defs needs to be regulated so that it doesn’t upset the lives of the locals.
Those meat prices are not bad. Prime rib here is like $21.00, bacon 🥓 is like $559 a pk. You know everything in the USA is expensive. You’re doing well with groceries.

It is scary how much the cost of living has gone up in SA 😥I live in the EU and these Woolworths food prices are quite similar to what you would see in grocery stores like Spar and Billa in Austria, which are both on the higher end. Granted that its Woolworths food but when I was home in Dec 2023, I noticed that the prices at Checkers and PnP are comparable or in some cases, a bit higher than Aldi prices over here. Just a different perspective on this.
It’s kinda older for $2750… If they were to make the necessary renovations to modernize it they can easily charge more bc it’s a beautiful property. love the outdoor area for entertaining and the mother in law area. And the sun room id make into an art studio. Have you considered staying somewhere inexpensive for a couple years while you save to purchase something?

I was planning to come on the retirement visa and was trying to secure a year lease in CT and it was so hard trying to find what I want while being in America. A lot of landlords dont even rent the nice places for 1 year as im sure you know lol The prices have gotten so expensive in just one year too. I saw a 1 bedroom condo in Durbanville outside of CT for $15k usd 1 year ago and I looked again and saw one in the same complex for $50k. I decided to stay in Crete Greece while I save to purchase soon after I make it to CT. I'll come visit though.

I live in south africa; you can get a 3 bed 2 bath apartment in camps bay, with a nice view of the ocean for less than this. Even in jhb, there are much better properties, in much better areas that one could rent for R50k a month.

I would like to see a separate transport edition for the cost of living series where you try Uber/Bolt, Gautrain, rental cars and the good old taxis (though you might need a friend to come with you on this one 😄)
I don't know where you staying but there are properties in great areas that will cost you way way less than that. Wow R50 000 that's ridiculous. You can get a fabulous 2 or 3 bedroom townhouse for between $480 - $1100 depending on area with all the amenities you need. You just need to buy your own furniture which can be done. Advice buy your food from CHECKERS and just the special items from Woolworths to save money.
Can you recommend a good Realtor? Regarding furniture: In the U.S., there's a TON of used items in excellent condition being sold on apps like OfferUp & Craigslist. Do you have similar outlets in S.A.? I've been searching but couldn't find anything.
