It's obviously a silly comparison so don't take it too seriously however it shows that a $20 uke can still be used as a proper instrument - provided it stays in tune!
why im i watching this
it's 3:30 am
i dont even own a uke
it is also 3:30am and i dont own a uke either ;-;
This is 100% relatable it's 3:30am and I don't own one
generic much
I'm just watching this cuz I'm a cheapskate who wants an ukulele that will collect dust after a week
3:40 am for me.
Supposed to be studying for an exam.

Thx for not stretching the video to like 15 minutes.

What, no Techmoan treatment? I wanted to see him completely take it apart and rebuild it.

thx so much for not making it a 10m vid even
the sound difference doesnt feel like $980 ... :p
Get out of here Marc Maron!!
That's what I was thinking
They feel nicer to play and cheaper ukuleles go out of tune very quickly so you have to keep re-tuning them
Right, but at least $300
For a soprano to get that kind of a rich tone, like a tenor? Yeah, definitely costs much more than a toy, which is what the other one is.
Is no one gonna talk about his literally impeccable strumming technique like 🤯
yeah man.

Spiri7ualShi7 that $1000 is pretty bad compared to a KoAloha, Kamaka, and Kanilea ukes. You could get much better ones for $1000.

It doesn’t matter how much it is, give a $1000 ukulele to a beginner player and it will sound like a $20 ukulele, give a professional player a $20 ukulele and it will sound a $1000 ukulele.

Plonkedy, plonkedy, plonkedy....Yep, I sound better on the $1000 Uke.
Well said!
The wooden one is definitely more distinct, fine and clear. The yellow on the other hand is blunt, but it isn't that bad.
The sound quality difference definitely isn't worth $980.
I think that bceausr of the strings not woods
Is worth propably but not the sound quality tje comfort and u cant realized diffrence bcs its bad record probanly its worth it
but some fret on yellow one is a little out of tune

Clear difference - with the cheaper one, the sound has a muffledness to it, whereas the expensive one has real depth and richness. However, you make both instruments sing with your amazing playing.

my thought is.... who the fuck spends $1000 on a ukulele
+Zach AnthonyK - it's an addiction!
...called UAS - Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome.
I'm a pretty bad case, though I mostly aim at low-price bargains that sound/work OK and then doctor them up to play well.
In a few days work a $20 Mahalo won't sound just like a Kiwaya, but it'll sound much better and the neck/frets/action can be -almost- as good if one takes care.
+Zach AnthonyK Who the fuck spends $1000 on a gaming rig+games?
I don't know if you know, but there are these things called "hobbies".
+Zach AnthonyK Guy in my class did! It sounds amazing, and was hand made to order just for him. When I get good, I'll be saving up for one from the same maker because it's a beautiful instrument.
+Zach AnthonyK same reason why someone would buy a multi thousand dollar Fender over a under a hundred dollar Encore guitar. Better build quaility, better playing and better sound. Simple.
+Flatulent Frank Yeah..........but when the price is on the top of a flag pole for the quality and brand name you are buying, it's not worth buying the brand when the quality is good but does not meet the steep price tag halfway.
From the thumbnail i thought that the yellow one was the $1000 one. xD
Dude banging lil video very cool tune too! However I do agree that cheap ones can still play a good tune but playing a more expensive one feels better and easier to play
Josh YouAre I agree, its definitely much easier to play and feels amazing and it was a little bit more difficult to play the tune on the yellow one. I just wanted to prove the $20 can do the job for beginners as I learned loads of skills on it for months before 'graduating' to the kiwaya. To me its definitely worth the money especially in terms of tuning stability, intonation and tone. Thanks for the compliments! G
George Elmes Have you heard about the "cuatro", our pride instrument in Venezuela? I would like you to see it! Look for Cheo Hurtado or Jorge Polanco Vids! It's a bigger version of your Uke, played all over the country in many differents kinds of folk music. You will love it! Great vid btw.
George Elmes I bought the exact same ukulele for my 5-yr old daughter for christmas (in purple and black with glitter :)) I love it, she loves it, it does the job. But now I'm tempted to buy a 100$ concert uke for me.... is it how the escalation to a 1000$ uke starts? Now I'm scared lol.

George Elmes My mum got a Mahalo uke (I think everyone's first uke is a Mahalo) and I spent much of my last visit learning the Formby chords, playing inappropriate flamenco licks and doing blues bends. no uke is worth a grand. definitely noticed a difference but not a $980 difference.
You don't buy an instrument only for his sound. The feel of the instrument is a very important thing too.
SaitoGray I still wouldn't get $1k uke. I have $275 uke and it's sounds just as good as the $1k uke
Brendan D. Ly Just like i would never buy a 1k guitar. But hey if you have the money and you know that uke is your thing, why not ?
Rage thats obvious
you know, some people do play the ukulele seriously, right?
the 1000 doller one sounded a bit better. but not to big of a difference.
Maybe I've got cheaper tastes, but in some ways I preferred the Mahalo. That wouldn't stop me from purchasing a more expensive uke or accepting a gift of one, though ;p
Dillon Taylor I think so too
Dillon Taylor You're not necessarily paying more for better tone, instead you're paying for a different tone, a tone that is achieved by the wood used and stuff, on top of higher quality hardware. Only certain woods can get certain tones, and in some cases, those woods are much more expensive.
Dillon Taylor Because he has a $20 mic instead of a $1000 one
dose it?
The Kiwaya had much richer tone, it sounded awesome.
Mahalo also did incredibly good considering it's only $20, but it sounded like a toy compared to that awesome tone of Kiwaya.
I'm looking forward to learn playing ukulele and I think I'm going to buy a Mahalo.
I might buy one buy yeah I heard a difference in the two but not 900+ dollars worth of difference lol
I also reccomend Hilo
AnotherGuyOnRUclips I think all ukuleles are toys
*****
that would be wrong ukuleles are actual instruments
Alice Alice I mean ya, but they're so small!
Accidentally watched this on 0.5 speed. I was freaked out.
😂
Literally the only reason why they sound different is because the Mahalo uke is plastic with nylon strings, and the Kiwaya is wood with probably aquila strings. You can get a cheap uke that's wood and aquila strings that will sound just as good as the Kiwaya.
My Mahalo is wooden I've never seen the plastic ones, but honestly I'd never spend $1000 for a ukulele if it's just nicer strings and *maybe* higher quality wood
Cheyanne Kelson actually the mahalo is wood, it just has really smooth paint on
*Yup*
Yeah I have a makala but its wooden so it sounds fine got it for $50
Actually, a solid wood uke does sound significantly better then a plywood (so called laminate) uke. I can see paying up to a few hundred for a decent, well made, solid wood, properly set up, soprano uke -- but that price is ridiculous. The fret board and bridge is rosewood (not ebony which would be better). I'm not too impressed. On the company's web site they have George playing a KMS-K which goes for a ridiculous $1750.00.takumiukulele.com/product/kms-k/
I can't tell the difference, but my earphones are cheaper than either ukes...
LoL. Get some better ones m8 xD

No way you can tell from a video smartass.
The $1K uke sounds several orders of magnitude better, but a $20 uke will suffice to learn on and jam out on the beach. That being said, if a student is interested in seriously learning to play any instrument, the best advice I can give is to buy the best instrument you can afford. Your ear will develop better, learning will be easier due to the action, and over the life of the instrument you will hear it grow more beautifully sounding as the wood ages and adjusts to your playing style. It will also hold its value longer and even possibly increase in value. Plus, there’s nothing quite like holding a well-crafted instrument made of wood that feels so good in your hands. That being said, consider the maturity of the student and their ability to care for it. Also, make sure to get it adjusted and setup professionally after you buy it and study up on instructions for caring for the instrument as well as any special instructions for the climate it will be most often exposed to daily.
That helps a lot. Thank you.

To everybody saying how the better Uke is to expensive for its sound: That one probably feels a lot better in your hands, stays tuned longer, easier to play, and it has a richer sound.
so would any $300 or $400 ukulele
Ukelele isn;t harmonica, you can tune it again.
+NemoTheEight just curious, do you play any instruments?
red Harmonica, but I'm not too good. And I'm quite sure that somebody leared me how to tune guitar (and Ukulele looks quite similar) but harmonica? He said that it's impossible to tune it at home so you just keep it in good condition untill it break.

@@ronaldgentry4777 Hello Sir,
I am doing Ukulele at school and I'm not very good at it. Do you have any tips?
Obviously, when you start out, the price of an instrument doesn't matter. Building up skill is much more important and a functioning $20 Ukelele is enough for that. A better instrument doesn't make you a better player.
True !
Well said!
+ConWolf Sorry to disagree, though a better instrument does not make you a better player it does help. Cheap instruments tend to be harder to keep in tune, finishing of frets is not good, sound is less than motivational. This comparison of a 20 to 1000 is a bit funny but the difference is very audible. Any guitar player would agree with me to buy a reasonable priced guitar, and not some
+ConWolf I disagree though, in this case it can be good. I also have a mahalo and a luna. So i see where you are coming from. But your skill is based on how well you can read and play chords/tabs. But Playing on a cheap instrument can set a standard for bad habits, and hearing chords on a cheap instrument can be distorted from a expensive well built instrument, So when you actually go to play on a much better instrument it can throw you off because your not used to playing a instrument that has better sound quality. It happened to me when i first learned to play guitar. I suggest if anything picking up a cheap guitar/uke play for 3 months and if you really love it, and develop a passion, pay the extra for a much better quality instrument with a much more trusted name.
I should be in bed by now but somehow I ended up watching some random guy compare ukuleles
ellegiggle
I love how he sounds real calm and all slow and stuff but all of this sudden he goes fucking ham.
I feel like this man was such a good musician that he was able to bring both instruments to extremely high levels of sound to where the expensive one was only slightly better because of its woodworking.

+DankyAlan 😂😂😂
A cheap Uke with Aquila strings will fool even the most musically inclined ears.
So true I have a £54 uke with Aquila's and it sounds really good X3
Cool I'll get some then! Thanks!
Josh Koelker I totally agree. Putting on good strings transforms a toyish uke into an instrument!
Kim Ellis However don't ever string a nice uke with Aquilas, they are terrible and make you uke sound like crap. Better buy some Southcoast or Worth!
Simple advice ;)
Ahh, yes totally true!
A big difference imo, but DEFINATLEY not worth the extra 980 bucks unless you are serious about recording / perform. Bring the 20 dollar one to the campfire, bring the 1k one to gigs :D
Bermrad Gaming And also George, Well done video and awesome ukulele skills!
+Bermrad Gaming I'm wearing a shitty 80$ bluetooth headset and I instantly could tell the difference. As you said, no not 980$ worth of difference. But if I were to just hear the sounds and not see the build quality, I'd say a 3 digit difference would be reasonable.
+eldragon00 Yeah well, Im amazed that the 20 dollar one is playable. If I were to play the Ukulele I would probably spend 100 dollars or something on my first Ukulele just to "be safe", but the 20 dollar one seems fine to begin with.
but let me get things straight, you said in your comment that a "3 digit DIFFERENCE would be reasonable?
20 dollars = 2 digits
20000 = 5 digits (3 digit difference)
Haha well no worries man, I know what you mean, just replace the word difference with "price", right? I hope that is what you mean because I'd not spend a 5 digit number on any Ukulele.
You missed your comma between my miss-spelling and your nazi.
+eldragon00 ..."you're a nazi" ... or did you want to say that he missed his comma and his nazi?
...or that he missed his comma between your miss-spelling and his nazi? But then again: why would there be a comma hanging out with a miss-spelling and nazi? ;P
I bought mine for $45 from aliexpress and I have to say I was very surprised by how good it is. It feels and sounds better than some ukuleles that I tried in a music store in my city that were twice or three times more expensive. Plus the one from ali came with a lot of equipment like a gig bag, a capo, tuner, a set of new strings and more.
There ya go, and I bet you like yours just as much more, because it did not cost you 1000 bucks. The most I ever paid for any uke was around $75, and it's one that doesn't even play, it's an antique that hangs on my wall.
My music store sells mahalo ukes for 20 dollars but then a big price gap to 80+ dollars for all other ukes (im not willing to spend that much for an instrument i have no experience in), one of the workers there said that there is supposed to be like middle ground (30-40$) that sounds and just as good as the 80+ dollar group. Sadly those ukes are sold out, probably meant that it sold well, the worker said that it will restock in a few more weeks so thats cool def gonna check it out
A decent set of Aquila's makes a world of difference, too - believe me.

this had me dead idk why
From a perspective of some mediocre girl that learned one song on the recorder in 3rd grade, I would honestly just buy the yellow one.💁🏽
Awkwardly Leaves it would be wise but if you enjoyed the instrument you’d end up getting the best one you can afford. As with guitars, mandolins, drums and every other instrument.
Awkwardly Leaves 🍁 oof.
Honestly unless my career revolves around playing the ukulele, I would never spend $980 more dollars for slightly better intonation.
Hahaha same story!! 3rd grade recorder for Music class XD
+loon2u4fun It doesn't matter the price of the instrument, it depends on the person who plays it. I am sure those poor Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii didn't have thousands of dollars to drop on their musical instruments, but here we are arguing about it.
Money doesn't make better music, hard work and talent do. Passion for music or passion for having an instrument you can brag about the cost of?

I spent two and a half thousand bucks on my uke, and it is not even a really expensive one ;) The ukulele is a serious instrument, so it makes totally sense spending the same amount of money as you would for a guitar or a violin. Watch some videos of jake shimabukuro and james hill, and you'll see why this is the coolest instrument out there :D

+Justin Other (Mr Snowballs) GOOD POINT,my first was a Mahalo, i put Aquila strings on it and it sounded much better, then upgraded to one costing 3 times the price, another improvement, then my 3rd had a solid spruce top , cost 6 times the Mahalo and sounds great,is louder and brighter, but it 's got quite a high action so it's not really easier to play. The tone also changes according to the type of wood on "solid" wood ukes, spruce gives a bright sound, hardwoods are usually more mellow. I'm not sure of the real value of of going up to a $1000 unless your professional.
When I went to buy a ukulele the person who worked at the shop said to not buy the mahalo ones. There are much better ones for the same price.
I wouldn't pay $1,000 for a uke with friction tuning pegs.
Yeah that was odd to me
Agree
The most valuable Martin ukes have friction pegs. All violins including Stradivari and Guarneri worth millions of dollars have friction tuning pegs.
Oh shush. Violins and ukuleles are both lovely instruments. I love playing both. Violins are more beautiful but ukuleles are cheerful and tropical. No need to hate on uke's to make violins look better. You're just making them look worse. They are both lovely and special in their own ways.
Thanks mom, lol. No joke, you sound just like her, especially with the "oh shush."
$20 dollar one isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Black Conservative Metalhead I thought so too.
I have the same Mahalo of a different colour. Surprised me too. Prefer it over a similarly inexpensive soprano i bought of another brand. There is a difference in thickness and shape between them so whether it's due to that 🤷♀️
The refined instrument in your hands was truly impressive. To see and hear what you can do with that yellow trooper filled me with delight !
Wondering now how many views Grace Vanderwall is going to bring all these Ukulele videos
she is how i ended up watching this video😂😂
Me too!!!!HAHAHAHAHA
Omg this is me...I'm now trying to buy a ukulele because of her
Me tho :D i have similar voice to her so i wanna buy an ukulele and start praticing! (still she is 2000 times better)
It is crazy that you mention that XD here for that exact reason....
I don't even play the ukulele, why am I here?
I blame Tyler Joseph
Me too
ME TOO
Me too
I have a ukulele because of him ^^
Imaadiis Esnault me too
The expensive one sounds better, but I dont think the difference is worth 980 dollars
That the expensive one maybe a bit overpriced in my opinion
+lihkan Yes but you've heard a single song played through, which is probably, a camera mic. The quality in instruments isn't just for the audience but for the musicians themselves, like he said the action is better and it generally felt better to play not to mention the large sound quality difference, and it really is pretty big. I don't get how people are so amazed he spent that much, or even that Ukuleles can cost that much. In the world of musical equipment $1000 or even £1000 (I'm English) really isn't that much
+lihkan That difference could be worth a record deal, and it also saves a ton of trouble in the studio.
What I like most is an unbiased trial specially on musical instruments,, very few do this,my friend here did super , same strum, dynamic and force, thanks.
Thoughts: it's not about how great it is, it's about how great the player is... ;)
Jack White is that you?
The cheap one is a bit more muted. Doesn't have the same rich projection of sound.
BW L i was thinking the same thing
It's because the strings, they're probably bad strings because of the price
@@joaomonteiro2479 The material also has a heavy impact in the volume, clarity and resonance of notes and chords, specially on string insturments. I don't know if it is exotic mahogany wood or a better material. There is also the issue of durability and tunning. Cheap ukuleles get out of tune very easily, and they won't sound the same after 1 year or 2
@@BigTerra92 i'm thinkin buying one fender venice ukelele, do you recommend?
@@joaomonteiro2479 Fencer still doesn't make it to where I'm from. But I would recommend Kala and Makala, they are durable and have a nice sound, those 2 brands are durable and have a pretty solid sound, perfect for learning imho, but I'm not an expert.
Also I would recommend you get a concert size.
This is the same for guitars (and probably all instruments). If a person can play the instrument really well, like you did, he/she can get the most amazing tune/sound from a 20$ instrument and make it sound like a freaking 1000$ one when played by someone not so skilled =P I got that a lot when I used to have guitar classes. I would bring my Ibanez guitar (about 1200$) and talk about how it sounded nice and everything, while my teacher made a freaking Michael (about 50$) one sound better than mine on a begginer's amp by Giannini (about 30$). Obviously, my Ibanez had better quality, but since I was new to playing it I couldn't make use of all of it. >
Wow a $1,200 initial investment for a beginner is big.
I know right. I didnt buy it though. Won it on a raffle. :P
+Andre Paes lucky
+Andre Paes It's equivalent to a master artist drawing masterworks with a pen on paper, compared to a novice using the most exquisite art supplies and painting crap. I get that. HOWEVER, I've played guitar for well over 10 years now and trust me on this... as far as f.e. acoustic guitars go, the difference between a 100 dollar-ish and a 1000 dollar-ish guitar is ginormous. Just thinking about a Furch in the upper price range gives me goose bumps.
+MikeoWar Oh, yeah. You're absolutely right. My point is only about how a professional can make the best ou of the crapiest equipment. But sure there are good reasons for that difference on the prices. =P
For some reason I like the sound of the yellow one more than the wooden one for some reason. Probably because that’s what I’m more used to
Mahalo ukes are pretty good.
Im a guitarist, just checking this out, there are ukes worth $1000? Shit brah, you can almost get a les paul for that price.
+subg88 Les paul isnt a guitar brand man its a famous guitar model from gibson lol.
Yes but u said Les paul dosent make ukes but there is no thing as a les paul instrument maker araound its a gibson electric guitar.
+Legendary Custer That's for a standard. A studio costs less than that ukulele.
+Axel F and other brands
What Les Paul is a gibson trademark only gibson and there under brands can make them like epiphone.
I don't even own an uke.
you're missing out
Connor Manley ikr
+Madeleine Laccohee
Same! I have been really interested in them lately too! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I do
+Fhockey 16 same getting one for Christmas
you make $20.00 sound good. I'd like a lesson video on that tune. Great job.
Thanks!
The 20$ one sounds really good too, there isn't all that difference
The only way I'd ever buy the $1,000 one would be if I were a professional musician who made a lot of money from performing and wanted the best possible sound. I'm not a professional musician or even a talented one, so my $25 ukulele is fine.
Tbh you can get as good an ukulele for $150.
spinemelter2000 my ukulele is $35
Mine was around £40 and it was on offer xD
I’ve got two, one was $20, one was $200. Never will I ever pay any more then that.
I’m getting my first ukulele soon for 30 dollars
I play the Violin, why am I watching ukulele videos?
Same number of strings? =)
blackhawk606 Eh, I guess?
GERARD I LOVE YOU!!!!
Gerard? I thought you play the guitar.
Learn both. Uke's easy to pick up after violin
i play the piano, and I'm watching a ukulele video.
I'm a drummer, enjoying a ukelele videos. Plural. :D
SimplexFireAlarmEnthusiast why don't you become tyler joseph and play both
cicada summer that's tru
I play trumpet and I'm watching this...
I play the triangle and here I am as well
What I learned is that also the cheapest ukulele with Aquila strings plays like the best ukulele on earth! Aquila strings forever!!
the new one sounds better, but not $980 better
I think they both sound good. There is a very slight difference in the tone, but I didn't hear what I would think $980 difference. Change the strings on the yellow uke and put a set like u have on the $1000 uke. There's several things that can help make the sound better. Does the $1000 uke have an electric hookup ? I have a uke made from bamboo... I absolutely love it.. Great sound and under $200. It's all about what you want and what makes you happy!! Bottom line !
Hey you there, we know you don't play the ukulele, we don't know why it was in your recommendations. About fifty other people have commented the exact same thing that you are about to so there is no need.
Thank you :)
Why is this happening? .. all this comments..
HOW TF DO U KNO PERV?!????😂
I play the ukulele...
I play the Ukulele
I do play the ukulele though..
Dude when I first heard you play the brown I’m like WOAH! He’s good!
Id buy a shit tonne of chocolate with $1000
I'm glad you still gave praise to the Mahalo uke. When doing comparisons, people often go on quality alone and just diss the lower product. But really, for $20, you're getting an amazing product. I'm hoping to get my first uke for Christmas ($70 when bundled with a case, tuner, dvd, etc.). And even that's pricy since I've never strummed a uke before. But I used to play the cello and recently got back into it. It was just way too complicated and proper for what I want. So I think a uke will fit me great. Any beginner or intermediate player should be satisfied with a $20-$50 uke.
tbh i prefer the sound of the $20 ukulele
I own good guitars and heard the difference, one separation each note was independent yet worked together, the tone just chimed it had sustain or a sort of afterglow, intonation is a challenge on something so tiny, but it's spot on, the design of fret board perfectly planed... it's a hot rod for the Uke shredder! The inexpensive one was not bad for the money..
